School District of Black Hawk The School District of Black Hawk does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap in educational programs or activities or in employment. May 2022 Building I want to thank the community for passing the referendum. Supporting the building project was an essential piece that should assist in keeping Black Hawk School District viable for many years to come. We are embarking on a process that has not been done at Black Hawk in 25 years, construction. Actually, if you consider the demolition portion of the project, I am not sure it has ever been done before at Black Hawk School District. There will be a lot of firsts, at least for me. I have heard a few questions about the process. When will the building start? How long will it take? Where will classes be held when work is being done? All of these are great questions. I will give you a tentative response to some of these at this time and more detail as we move forward. The district will do its best to keep you updated. As part of the effort to inform the public, in the near future we will replace the referendum tab on our website with a construction tab. As far as the timeline for construction it will be a while before you see anything tangible. The process has started for the planning. I have and will continue to meet with the team from HSR on the plans for the building, the process and the timeline. The HSR team intends to be done with plans by December and to put the construction phase out to bid in January of 2023. The intent will be to start construction in March or April of 2023. The construction will be a phased approach. The builders will build the addition between the two buildings and the new office/entrance first. Classes and rooms will be moved into the new spaces. Then the designated sections of the building will be torn down. Finally, the new section of the addition to be set on the footprint of the removed portions will be built. The project as a whole is projected to be completed by December of 2024. Some processes will start soon, such as the site survey. We will engage Environmental Management Consulting to deal with and plan any needed asbestos or other hazardous material removal. Borrowing and investing of the necessary funds will take place in the next month or two. Many things that will happen in the near future will not be noticeable but are necessary to make sure this project is done well and meets the needs of the students, staff and community. The aim is to move forward with the process very deliberately under the guidance of HSR. HSR has completed many school projects and is very knowledgeable of the process and requirements of work such as ours. We believe in the end the community will be pleased with the commitment that has been made. Sincerely, Willy Chambers
During 3rd grade guidance, we spent a lot of time talking about character education traits. We completed several smart board games to reinforce these character education words. During guidance time, we had lots of productive conversations about why individuals should demonstrate good character at all times. We dis- cussed such words as honesty, responsibility, respect, courage and thankfulness to name just a few. We wrapped up this topic by each student picking a character education word, writing it on a key template and coloring the key. The 3rd Keys to Good Character display is outside my office. The students enjoy picking out their key and showing their friends as they walk by the display. 5th graders enjoyed bowling at Leisure Lanes in Monroe as a reward for the Middle School Student Council Butter Braid sale!!
Elementary Middle School High School Bradley Figi Thea Kammerud Carter Brock Gamez Cole Dunlavey Baumgartner Gunnar Werren Attention 5th Grade Parents/Guardians: Your student will be entering 6th grade for the 2022-2023 school year. Each student is required to have a Tdap vaccination prior to the start of school. The Tdap is an adolescent tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis combination vaccine. If a student received a dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine, such as Td, within five years before entering the grade in which Tdap is required, the student is compliant and a dose of Tdap vaccine is not required. We enjoyed reading books to Mrs. Petitjean’s 5th grade class. They also read to us!! After reading they gave us Dunkin Donuts for breakfast! We look forward to more activities with 5th grade! Mrs. Wills Mrs. Petitjean's 5th graders earned "Books for Breakfast" as a reward day! They enjoyed reading with Mrs. Wills's 2nd graders, followed by donuts at snack time! It was a great way to encourage good behavior, partner up with the 2nd grade for some reading, and celebrate the end of National Reading Month. Mrs. Petitjean
Black Hawk FFA Even with the transition from one officer team to another our chapter has still been as busy as ever. We started off the month with our first chapter meeting introducing our new team. Our team for 2022-2023 consists of Stevie Cobb as our president, Makayla Kammes as our Vice President, Ellie Elder as our secretary, Gavin Smith as our treasurer, Lilly Schultz as sentinel, and Allyse Troemel serving as reporter. Following our first meeting, we had our Easter Potluck. We had many members attend and we had all got to enjoy some good food. Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to it! That same week we had our Easter Egg Hunt. There were about forty kids who participated. They enjoyed Easter egg dying, cookie decorating, Bingo, coloring, we made Easter Bunny cups, and, of course, the Easter Egg Hunt. We then had lunch which was Papa Murphy's pizza followed by a visit from the Easter bunny, some tag, and oth- er fun activities in the gym. We hope all the kids who came had fun! On Saturday, April 16, we had our Annual Alumni Auction. Thank you to Powers Auction Service for hosting once again this year. We appreciate everything you all do for us! Finally, we would like to wish good luck to all of the students participating in the State CDEs on April 29 in Madi- son. We hope each team will represent Black Hawk well! Sincerely, your 2022-2023 FFA reporter, Allyse Troemel

Figi also commented and thanked Dee for that she is doing for the referendum. Public Comment was called for- Dusty Williams - Thank the Board members for serving on the board, Thanks to Willy and Cory for sharing information for the District. Joined the committee to help and have only had 2 or 3 people attending the meetings. Dusty asked if the Board is even supporting the referendum. Monroe Board has done a very good job of working and pushing there referendum. Where are the people that care as not much support has been given? Part of this committee was to start a Facebook page and one person reached out to Dusty stating good things. Board needs to reach out and push more for referendum. Do not be reliant on just one person to push for the referendum. People need to get out and push and lead. If the school board members are not pushing referendum, it will fail. We have 3 weeks left to get it pushed out the information. Share the post from Black Hawk Pride post. The Black Hawk Pride page has over 100 followers and reached over 7500 people. Thousands of people have read the post. Share facts and get the information out to the voters. Lead by example and push and support school. Thanks for your time and consideration.
