School District of Black Hawk The School District of Black Hawk does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap in educational programs or activities or in employment. June 2022 Message from the Principal's Office Thank you students and families! It has been another year filled with many blessings, and great memories for your children. Ad- ditionally, there were still so many challenges that students had to face and overcome. We are very impressed by the grit and resilience of our students, as they adapted to changing schedules and changing settings as we entered the school year with Covid- 19 mitigation strategies. Our students and teachers worked incredibly hard this year with elementary students building reading fluency and comprehension with our new reading curriculum, Wonders. It was awesome to watch our elementary students grow in their mathematical reasoning and math discourse skills utilizing Ready Math as their curriculum. We want to thank all the fam- ilies, and our Parent's Club for their efforts in rewarding our students with end of the year field trips, and Gotcha behavior incen- tives. We ended the year with our Gotcha Pyramid being filled, and the students enjoyed a day of bouncy houses, silly photo booth, popcorn, and Culver's ice cream. Middle school is always a fun group, as they grow and wrestle with all of the changes that they go through during these early years of adolescence. It takes some dedicated, and good natured teachers to mentor and help these students feel comfortable in the school setting, as they wrestle with these physical and mental changes. We want to thank everyone for their assistance in continuing to support our annual ski trip fundraiser, and want to thank Mr. Dan Campbell for his efforts with our middle school student council in making our dances and school year fun. Big thank you again to Parent's Club for providing the means for our students to gain valuable memories with their classmates on their end of the year field trips. Our sixth graders got to enjoy, once again, the outdoor experiences provided by our local members of the Gratiot Sportsman's Club. We thank them for their time and dedication to our students. We want to thank all of our coaches who give their time to offer middle school sports. These are valu- able experiences for our students to exercise, compete, and interact with their peers in leadership positions. Academically, we saw solid growth in our middle school students on their math aptitude. The spring of 2019 and subsequent years, had an impact on many students' progress towards eighth grade math goals. We are impressed by the commitment to a growth mindset, and continued improvement that our students displayed. We want to wish our 8th graders well, as they transition to their final phase of secondary education, high school! Our high school students are a diverse group. We admire so many of them for the self-discipline and grit that they display. All students have strengths, and sometimes, academics may not be the best display of their talents; but I applaud them for showing up everyday and putting the work in. High school can be a very tough time for some, and the fact that our students commit to coming to school and completing their education, is a testament to themselves and their support network. Some of our seniors had to overcome some personal difficulties and worked their tails off to earn their diplomas. We are so proud of them, and all of our seniors. We are proud to say that we are graduating 100% of our Class of 2022 students. For the most part, our students treat each other very well, and are respectful of the diversity that exists in a school community with so many individuals coming from varying backgrounds and beliefs. We have many students taking dual credit courses, and challenging themselves as they prepare for life after high school. That is very impressive! Some of our students will walk out with a high school diploma, and twelve plus college credits in their portfolio. Our students once again experienced many team and individual successes this year in a variety of competitive environments. There were many impressive accomplishments in athletics, FFA, forensics, vocal choral performances, band performances. All in all, I am very proud of our teachers', specialists', and support staffs' efforts this school year in leading and supporting our students. I believe that our staff create a very welcome school environment for our students and visitors alike. Every morning our students are welcomed by smiles and pleasantries by our staff. Teaching is a very stressful profession, with many different hats to wear, and long work days which include planning, and grading assessments off of school contracted time. Our teachers are dedicated to our students and their craft, and we recognize that we are not perfect by any means, but are committed to learn- ing and growing right along with our students. Our teachers have had to overcome new stressors in the district's Covid-19 miti- gation strategies and the changing schedules. I believe our staff handled those new stressors with grace and patience. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do for students and the Black Hawk School District. We work very hard to help your students succeed and to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all. Have a great summer, enjoy those children, they don't stay young for long! Cory Milz, Principal

Holland Strong! We lost our classmate Drew Holland during our 3rd grade year. As we reflect on our time here at Black Hawk, we wanted to remember him in our celebration to- day. We dedicate this bench in the memory of Drew as a gift to the School District of Black Hawk. The Class of 2022 Three Seniors have earned the privilege to wear gold honor cords at graduation. Students earn honor cords for having a cumulative GPA of 3.667 or higher for seven semesters. This year Seniors who will wear honor cords at graduation are Elijah Shelton, Alyssa Lange and Alyssa Woodley. Big congratulations to these three students for all their hard work.
On May 18th, Black Hawk held its scholarship award's night. Thirteen students were awarded various scholarships in the amount of $91,384. Black Hawk FFA The month of May brings more opportunities to involve the younger students and do more hands-on activities. We are able to do more interactive activities like planting Mother’s Day flowers. In just the past few months of talking to the other officers, I think I can speak for all of us and say how much we love working with the younger kids. We are hoping that in the future many of them will be involved in our FFA chapter. Following the Mother’s Day flowers event we participated in “Day at the Dairy.” It was definitely a warm day, but the kids that went had fun and learned a lot. Several FFA members went to help out and served as group leaders, with a few even being “Station Presenters.” The kids were exposed to dairy farming and management and what they are all about.
On May 1-7, our soil judging team traveled to Oklahoma to compete in the State Soil Judging Competition. In addition to the competition, the team also got the chance to explore a little bit of Oklahoma. They got to see things like the Oklahoma City Zoo, stockyards, the Western Heritage Museum, national parks, and the Woolaroc Wildlife Preserve. They judged on Thursday and had awards and a variety of good meals. Overall it seemed like it was a great experience for everyone. On May 13 we held “Bring your Tractor to School Day.” We had a good group participate and they enjoyed a cookout for lunch. Thank you to everyone who participated! Finally, the End of the Year trip was held on May 19th. A group of FFA members, who were able to meet all the qualifications, ventured to the Kalahari. Ten students participated in the trip where they enjoyed the Tom Foolery Adventure Park, which included arcade games, bowling, go-karts, mini-golf, and more. It sounded like they had a great time! From the Black Hawk FFA officer team, we would like to wish everyone a fun and eventful summer and we're looking forward to all of the exciting events coming up next school year! Sincerely, your 2022-2023 FFA Reporter,

Black Hawk – New 4 Day/All Day 4K Black Hawk School District is enhancing its 4K offering by adding more time for play based learning. The district will increase the current 2 day/all day program to a Monday through Thursday all day program. Your child will have more opportunities to grow and learn through play. What’s New? Black Hawk will continue its current academic curriculum along with adding more time for students to explore, build relationships, enhance language skills, and improve both physical and mental health through play. With the increase in time, we are able to provide a more consistent academic experience to promote the retention of skills and exposure to a wider variety of hands on learning experiences. We will also be adding in more time for rest in order to allow your child to recharge and reset throughout the day. Games and Toys Give students the opportunity to learn to cooperate, follow rules, develop self-control, and build relationships with peers. Free Play and Guided Play Children will have a variety of play opportunities throughout the day. Free Play promotes creativity and imagina- tion. Guided play allows adults to participate in, as well as model appropriate play skills. Benefits of play •Smarter, faster learning and better memory. •More creative •Better communication and vocabulary •Greater im- pulse control and emotion regulation •Greater social competence, more empathy, happier. •Better health •Life les- son learning •Better relationships. Early Literacy, Math Exploration, and Language Students will be learning letter names and sounds. We will also work on other early literacy skills by making books, looking at big books, identifying our names, words and symbols in print. Children will participate in hands- on, creative activities that will prepare them for basic math skills. We will focus on number sense, pattern recogni- tion, counting, simple shapes, and measurement. Students will be provided opportunities to enhance their listening and understanding as well as their speaking and communicating skills. Fine Motor and Gross Motor Fine motor skills are movements students make with the small muscles of the hands. Strengthening these muscles help children perform important tasks such as, feeding themselves, buttoning and zipping clothes, writing, and drawing. Gross motor develops large muscles in the body. By providing students opportunities to run, jump, crawl, climb etc., they gain strength and confidence in their body. Physical activity also promotes a healthy body and mind. De- veloping these skills increases student’s ability to do more complex skills in future activities. Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. Middle School Field Trips… Rendezvous-6th Grade Vitense-7th Grade
Skyzone-6th Grade Middle School Bowling with Ms. M & Mrs. Ruegsegger
On May 12th, the Middle school participated in a Team Building event. Brian Kenney with CESA 3 and Team Extreme LLC had the middle school students partake in several team building activities. After the activities he discussed how if a student gets negative that impacts how the rest of the activity goes. The students worked in groups and had to listen to directions from their peers to accomplish a goal. Brian ended the day talking with the students about controlling how they respond to situations, being positive, working through challenges and being inclusive of each other. The students were presented with a bracelet that had E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome). A person can not control events from happening but they can control their response to them. Brian told the students to control their "R". Meaning working to control how they react to situations and to find the positives.

Congratulations to Ellie Edler and Tatum Baumgartner on their All Conference Honorable Mention Selections. Recycling and Other Dumpsters As always the staff and Board thank everyone who has donated to the metal/aluminum can drive. The funds have proven to be beneficial to the staff and students of the school district. The district greatly appreciates the efforts of Powers Auction Service in providing this opportunity. A couple of notes that we would like to make: Please do not place items with Freon/coolant in the recycling dumpster Please do not place TV’s or Computer/Related technology in the dumpster Please do not place trash in the recycling dumpster The other dumpsters (serviced by Faherty) are for school uses only We do appreciate the donations. Improper use of the dumpsters costs the district and may result in a net loss. Sincerely, Willy Chambers

Motion by Paulson and seconded by Seffrood to consent to agenda. Motion carried on a voice vote. Board of Education Report- Paulson- wants to Thank the community and the Black Hawk Pride Group for all the support in passing the referendum. WE WILL HAVE A MEETING ON APRIL 26, 2022 TO MEET WITH BAIRD FOR FINANCING OF THE BUILDING PROJECT Administration Report: Chambers-I have attached a report from Lori Wick on some of the items that she has worked with Ms. Nehs in her role as a FFA men- tor. I appreciate Lori's work and efforts to assist Jess. I believe that Jess has started off her career at Black Hawk in a very positive manner. I believe the willingness of the Board to support a mentor in this role is an essential part of the continued success of the program. I have attached a flier from WASB for a PD opportunity called "Governing for Excellence" if you would like to attend, please let me know and I will get you registered. I was very happy to see the referendum results. Thank you to the community for passing the referendum. Thank you to the Support Our Students Committee did to get the community to review the needs and the value of the school. Thank you to the staff for their patience they demonstrated through this over two year process. Thank you to Dan and Deb for donating money for advertisements. I believe we need to be very cognizant of the 46% of the community that voted no, respect their perspectives, and hopefully change many of their perspectives as we move through this process. This will be a 2+ year process that has started already. The work will not be less for many of us for the next couple of years. There will be strain on all involved in the school system while this process proceeds. Patience and creativity will be essential to get through the process as positively as possible. Kevin Mullen called me late Thursday to discuss the financing and wants to get it started ASAP. Today is too soon to be ready to move forward. He would like the Board to consider a special meeting for this purpose. It is in Mr. Figi's control to call special meetings. In talking with Kevin, we would ask for a special meeting April 25 . The initial planning meeting with HSR is scheduled for April 22 at 10 AM. I will be meeting with Jeff Jacobson this week to gain some insight into the process, the potential pitfalls and recommendations on how to maneuver through the process in a very successful manner. I have included Mr. Saterlee's resignation for your review. I thank Jon for his service to the district. I sent out an email about a date to negotiate and have not heard back, please let me know some dates and times that may work. I believe that it is likely that Mr. Milz will cover this as well, but it was amazing to see Aladdin presented by our students. I am very happy to see an event offered again for the students to participate in. I received an email from our new special education teacher. He wanted to know our interest in sponsoring Esports. I will be meeting with him in a near future to discuss what this may look like. I will likely have this on the agenda for the May meeting. I have attached the election results for your review in this section. Milz 1. I want to say congratulations to the middle school and high school students for their fine performances in Aladdin. Thank you to Mr. Eric Amweg and Ms. Kim Haynes for all their time and hard work they put into producing and directing the musical performance. 2. The purpose of this activity was to promote the social and emotional needs of students who at times, feel ostracized by peers and unwelcome. This was a passive and peaceful demonstration that did not interfere our academic lessons, nor did any disruptions present themselves during the school day.
