The Parent Link Mr. Wilson Continuation: Ms. Tania Torres-Bruno (ESOL IA), Ms. Shan Rezner (E-Learning Asst.), Mr. Alex Spencer and Ms. Leslie Shackel- ford-Rinicella (IA – EX ED). Thank you for your continued support along with adjusting to our new normal during these very trying times. I am look- ing forward to a great year for all students and staff as we Rise Together Towards Excellence! Rachad T. Wilson Principal, Cocoa High School Welcome Back Class of 2022 Welcome back, Seniors! We are looking forward to seeing everyone return to campus on Tuesday, August 10th. This year is the year you have all been looking forward to – Senior class events, Senior status, and most importantly, GRADUA- TION! Here are some tips for making senior year your best year ever. Make sure you come to school every day, on time and ready to put forth your best effort. You cannot learn and be suc- cessful if you are absent or tardy to class. The learning and work happens IN the classroom. Learn to set your phone alarm if you have trouble waking up in the morning. Set an example for underclassmen by getting to class on time. Timeliness is a skill that all employers put a high value on, so practice being on time and on task now so that when em- ployment opportunities arise, you have made this important work skill a natural habit. Know who your support people are on campus and where to find them. Your counselor is Mr. Steve Loufek (loufek. steve@brevardschools.org ext. 22022), and your cohort administrator is Ms. Denise Stewart (stewart.catherine@brevard- schools.org ext. 22004). Both of us are located in the front office. If you go to the attendance office, you can ask Mrs. Par- ham to call for either of us anytime you need to see us. If we are not immediately available, we will make arrangements for someone else to assist you in our absence. We are here to assist you in any way possible. Your success is our number one priority. Communicate with your teachers in a positive way. If you are having trouble understanding an assignment or are worried about an upcoming test or quiz, let your teachers know. Not turning in assignments or avoiding tasks because you don’t understand only causes you further anxiety since it has a negative impact on your grades. Your teachers want to help you, they just need to know what help you need. Senior year can be fun and exciting, and at the same time stressful and overwhelming. Know that everyone on campus wants to see our Seniors walk across on the stage in May with a diploma and post-graduation plan waiting for them. We are all so proud of you and look forward to celebrating Graduation for the Class of 2022! Tiger Pride! The Parent Link CHS College and Career Readiness Pathways At Cocoa High, we are working hard to make sure our high school students are on a Pathway towards College and Career Readiness (CCR). Students must be enrolled in at least one course that provides the opportunity to earn CCR credit. This means that all students should either be on a Career and Technical Education Pathway (CTE), an Advanced Placement Pathway (AP), or taking Dual Enrollment courses at EFSC. For those students who are unsure of their post-high school plans, AVID is a great Pathway option, as the classes and teachers will help students develop the important skills and understanding to be successful in any College or Career Pathway. Our CTE Pathway options include programs and certifications in Exercise Science, Technical Design, Culinary Arts, Automotive Collision Technology, Digital Design, Building Construction Technologies, or JROTC (Army). Students ideally begin the CTE sequence in 9th grade, and by senior year, after taking and passing the industry certification exams for their program, become eligible for either an internship (sometimes even a PAID internship), or dual enrollment at EFSC in their CTE program of choice. Our Middle School students also have the ability to take the MS CTE preparation courses for our HS programs, exploring the opportunities so they can make an informed decision about entering a program by the end of 8th grade. The CTE Pathway is a great option for the student who is wanting to graduate high school career ready rather than enrolling immediately in a college or university. Our AP Pathway provides students the chance to experience college-level coursework here on our campus with our teachers. This Pathway is an opportunity for students to potentially earn college credit by scoring a 3 or better on the AP exam associated with their course. The AP courses we offer cover a wide range of curricular interests: World History, US History, Psychology, Computer Principles, Calculus, Physics, Biology, Literature, and Composition. While the coursework and AP exams are challenging, our teachers work hard to help students learn the important skills that go along with college-level courses, helping prepare them for that next level of academic work. Dual Enrollment is offered through our neighbor Eastern Florida State College. Students can earn their AA degree while they work on earning their HS diploma. Because these courses are paid for by Brevard Public Schools, this Pathway can save students a lot of time and money on their way to earning a Bachelors degree. In order to be eligible for Dual Enrollment, students must have a 3.0 GPA and take and pass the PERT exam, a college readiness exam offered here on our campus throughout the year. This year, through a partnership between BPS and EFSC, we have expanded our Dual Enrollment option to include offering the Success Strategies course here on our campus to any student with a 2.5 GPA or better, even if they have not yet passed the PERT. This opportunity will provide many more students the chance to earn CCR by taking and passing this course with a grade of “C” or better. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is not only a Pathway option for our students, it is the foundation of our instructional practices here at CHS in all classes grades 7-12. AVID focuses on WICOR strategies to help students with content lessons. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Students in AVID Pathway classes learn organizational and study skills, get extra tutoring help with other course work, and also research and learn about the college application and search process. Our AVID coordinator, Ms. Cassi Sheron, leads not only her team of teachers in supporting AVID students, but also our entire staff in how to provide the important WICOR skills and learning strategies to help ALL of our Cocoa HS students succeed. For questions or more information, please contact Ms. Denise Stewart, Assistant Principal of Curriculum at stewart. catherine@brevardschools.org or at ext. 22004. The Parent Link Cohort 2026 & 2027 Welcome to a new school year, not without challenges, however with an expectation of a great outlook. We are continuing to deal with COVID-19 which has impacted us all. Globally around the world everyone has had to adjust priorities and accept a new normal to our daily lives. With the new year it is time to focus on academic studies and operate under the guidelines of safety as we continue to navigate through the mysteries of COVID. It is important that students remain on task and earn good grades. It is essen- tial that students communicate with teachers for support. Parents, if you have not set up a FOCUS account, please call the school to set up your account. This will allow you to know your student’s grades and assignments for the week. It is also a great way to communicate with your child’s teachers. We know that parent involvement makes a great difference. TIPS for Student Success • Earn good grades • Know each teacher’s classroom requirements • Be organized • Always do extra credit work that is offered • Be aware of the attendance policy • Establish good relationships with all teachers • Get extra help before or after school • Take good notes in class • Come to class prepared • Study, Study, Study • Get involved I would like to introduce our new middle school guidance counselor, Ms. Tracy Tidwell. Students or parents can pick up one of these packets in the Front Office or download one from our school website by clicking on the Athletic tab. If you need a coach’s contact information, you can contact the Athletic Director, Mark Carstens at carstens.mark@brevardschools.org. Middle School Basketball does not begin until the end of October and Middle School Track will begin in January after Winter Break. Middle School students can participate in all sports if they make the team. If a student needs a sports physical and cannot get into their pediatrician, Dr. Allotta at Parrish Medical Group Port St John location will gladly see students from Cocoa HS in his office, on Mondays and Thursdays by appointment ONLY. Please call the office (321) 433-2247 for an appointment. The cost of the physical is $25.00 (it does not go through insur- ance). Coach Mark W. Carstens Athletic/Activities Director Carstens.Mark@Brevardschools.org 321-482-8495 (Cell) Media Center News We would like to welcome you and your students to this school year. The Media Center provides a wide range of materi- als in varying levels of difficulty to meet the literacy needs of all of our students and teachers. These resources are chosen with a media selection policy for age-appropriate content and interest. As with all other aspects of a student’s education, parents are encouraged to be involved in a student’s book selections. Even though part of the media collection is filtered for senior reading levels and interest, we still ask that parents read and review the books your student selects. Besides reviewing the print source, it is possible to have your student read a wide variety of E-books that are offered as well. These are available on the student’s BPS Launchpad on the SORA app. They can choose from fiction, non-fiction, math, science, and many other subjects. The brand new SSYRA books and FTR books for this school-year are also avail- able for reading. Another great resource available for research and electronic resources is on the BPS Launchpad using the BPS GALE Secondary or BPS GALE Elementary Apps depending on grade level of the student. The student can use these resources for research papers or looking up any factual information for their classes. The Media Center is also featured on the Cocoa High School Webpage on Launchpad under the Departments link. Or, the direct URL to the webpage is https://www.brevardschools.org/CocoaJRSR. All of these resources are also featured there including the GALE databases, SORA, World Book Online and many others. The Parent Link AVID Program Welcome back, AVID families! We are looking forward to another fun-filled year in AVID! We would like to welcome our new AVID teachers to the AVID program: Mrs. Hoksins, Ms. Dees, and Ms. Lay! We are so excited to have you. Parents/guardians, please read your student’s syllabus and contact your student’s teacher if there are any questions. The AVID program is seeking AVID tutors! If you would like to help our students grow and make $10 an hour for two days a week, please contact the AVID Coordinator, Cassi Sheron, at sheron.cassandra@brevardschools.org. Training is paid, but a background check is required. Ms. Cassi Sheron AVID Coordinator, Cocoa High School 632-5300 x22148 sheron.cassandra@brevardschools.org. Attendance Matters What Can You Do as a parent or guardian? · Talk about the importance of showing up on time and staying at school each day. · Help your child make routines to make their next morning run smooth and be more prepared for the day. · Try to schedule medical and dental appointments outside of school hours. Communicate with the School: · Know CHS’s attendance policy. · Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school. · Check on your child’s attendance regularly to be sure absences are not piling up. · Ask school officials for help, other parents, or community agencies if you are having trouble getting your child to school. Understanding that chronic tardiness can significantly reduce the minutes of instruction for all students enrolled in the class, not just the tardy student. We have created a Tardy and Truancy plan with these expectations. Students should be in their classroom BEFORE the tardy bell rings, once the teacher closes the door, that student is tardy no exceptions. Teachers will let students into the classroom, but the teacher will let them know that they are marked tardy. Teachers will ensure all students have a proper classroom/restroom pass every single time they allow students out of class. This will include the planner or the tardy passes that have been provided! We understand that there are times you will need to check-out your child (doctor’s appointments, etc). We ask that you send your child in with a note, and they can drop it by attendance in the morning. Ms. Parham will provide your child with a pass for their teacher to authorize the student being released at the appropriate time. Parents can then check out their child by providing a picture ID at the checkout window. There are no check-outs after 3:00 pm Monday-Thursday and 2:00 pm on Friday. Additionally, there are not check-outs by phones! Steve E. Primus, Ed.D. At Risk Coordinator 632-5300 ext. 22027 Page 7
The Parent Link Cocoa High School Tiger Battalion “Welcome to a New Year” Hello Cadets of the Tiger Battalion for the year 2021-2022! I am Cadet Second Lieutenant Jake Deluca, and I am the new Battalion Commander. Executive Officer Cadet Second Lieutenant Arisa Bennett, Command Sergeant Major Cadet First Lieutenant Christopher Armel, and Sergeant Major Cadet Second Lieutenant Jarett Garvey join me. I am very proud of this team and together I know we will be able to improve the program and help facilitate the guidance of new and returning Cadets. I have a deep passion for leadership, and I know that through purpose, direction, and motivation we can improve the program and ourselves astronomically. Our Tiger Battalion has maintained its high level of prestige for years and although we have had challenges, we managed to persevere and continue the constant improvement of our program. This was shown during the COVID pandemic, where we worked tirelessly to continue improvement and present ourselves to Brigade during the JROTC Program for Accreditation to keep our Honor Unit with Distinction. I know this continuous improvement will continue and I as well as my fellow leaders will work at our absolute best to face any difficulty and rise to any challenge we may face. Along with improving returning cadets, we are excited to work with new cadets and teach them about JROTC principles such as teamwork, leadership, the army values, as well as Tiger PRIDE. Although the pandemic caused the disruption of many JROTC activities we plan to bounce back and return as many as we can to ensure that every cadet has the best JROTC experience they can have. Some of these activities include the Raider, Drill, Rifle teams, more Color Guard events, the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC), and regular classroom activities we could not perform during COVID. In September, we have a visit to Patrick’s Air Force Base, as well as a Senior trip to the University of Central Florida planned. All these events and activities are what allows JROTC to thrive and act on its mission of “motivating young people to be better citizens.” We hope to see many cadets participate in these community and service learning activities to better our community and increase awareness of citizenship. There is so much more planned for JROTC this school year! More community involvement, Physical Training improvements, and the list goes on. Together, with me and my team we will make sure to act on these plans and provide the best year in JROTC we can! TIGER PRIDE!... The Parent Link FSA Retake FSA Retake Information - Fall Testing Windows (September 13th-October 1st, November 29th-Dec. 17th, 2021) Please review the following state testing policies with your student before testing: ▪ Electronic Devices—Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom), even if the devic- es are turned off, or students do not use them. If your student is found with an electronic device, his or her test will be invalidated. ▪ Headphones—For the reading portion of the assessment, headphones are required. For the safety and security of the student, we recommend that students bring headphones/earbuds that can plug into an auxiliary port. Bluetooth head- phones are NOT permitted. ▪ Testing Rules Acknowledgment—All tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads: “I understand the test- ing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.” Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by clicking the box in the secure browser. ▪ Discussing Test Content after Testing—The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they sign below the Testing Rules Acknowledgment states: “Because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, you may not discuss or reveal details about the test content (including test items, passages, and prompts) after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online, for example, on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, or Instagram.” Please make sure your student understands that “discussing” test content includes any kind of electron- ic communication, such as texting, emailing, posting to social media, or sharing online. While students may not share information about secure test content after testing, this policy is not intended to prevent students from discussing their testing experiences with their parents/families. ▪ Working Independently—Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated. In addition, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns. Student tests within a school that are found to have remarkably similar answer patterns will be invalidated. ▪ Leaving Campus—If your student leaves campus before completing a test session (e.g., for lunch, an appointment, ill- ness), he or she will not be allowed to return to that test session. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on a make-up day. Please remember not to schedule appointments on testing days. PSAT All 10th grade students will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on October 13, 2021. If you are an 11th grader and would like to take the PSAT, on October 13, 2021 for the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) the fee is $18.00.
