On July 10, 1045 the town was mentioned in a document for the first time. Today
Schaffhausen is one of the best preserved cities dating back to the Middle Ages. Up
ahead around the corner, down an alley and underneath the archway – anyone who
sets out to discover the winding little alleys, the magnificent houses with their ornate
oriels and the numerous fountains will find themselves unexpectedly transported back in
time a thousand years. And from time to time it seems as if the hustle and bustle, and
the din and the clatter of yesteryear still hover in the air.
