Despite these great results and excellent scores by the rest of our teams and the fact that one of our top competitor’s Tack Tracker failed to record, RQYS beat us by just two points Being well outnumbered and combined with the Tracker failure all our skippers and crews should be proud of themselves. Since the event conclusion we have discovered an error in the scoring which would reverse the win. We have notified RQ who are none too happy. mystery of the dux brass plaque Mystery of the Memorial Brass Plaque of the ‘Pamir’ in the grounds of the clubs retreat at Dux has been solved. A full story on the tragedy of her foundering in September 1957 will in the next issue of iN SYnC. The plaque was placed at Dux as part of a “ Pamir” reunion here on the coast in the mid 1980’s. Bruce Duncan was a very active member of IYFR (“International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians”) and stood as a World Commodore at one stage. Thank you to our wonderful Club members who provided the below details regarding the mysterious plaque located at Dux Anchorage. Such a wonderful and insighting story. syc golf club It is hard to believe yet another year is drawing to a close. The Southport Yacht Club Golf Group has strong support amongst those members who partake in this form of enjoyment. It is not unlike boating in many ways. If you wish to score you have to get the ball in the hole but in so doing one has to brave the elements, wind, rain, sun exposure, navigation, pressure, challenging decision making and the intestinal fortitude to carry out those decisions. It is a game of honour. Cheating is frowned upon, no kicking the ball out from under a bush in the SYC Golf Group (if anyone is watching!!! ). There is one huge difference though. The cost. Once you have your “sticks”, playing is reasonably priced in this part of the world. We play eleven courses each year and although we hand out prizes after each match, the ultimate prize is to win “ The Commodores Trophy “, a perpetual trophy with a long history dating back decades. The Commodore, Ray McMahon, himself a member of the Golf Group will be presenting this trophy to this year’s winner at our Christmas Party and presentation on December 4th. Merry Christmas everyone. MATHEW BELCHER OAM A balancing act… Thanks again for your support, I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon. family, sailing and uni Well certainly the past month has been pretty busy for my Mathew Belcher OAM family and I. This past month saw many of the different aspects of my life come together which proved quite #Aus11 challenging. For most of the month of October, I was competing in the Etchells World Championships and lead in events, held in Brisbane. In somewhat of a surprise we managed to take out the World title with Martin Hill from Sydney. This was a great experience for me and a welcome break from the hard grind of the Olympic circuit. It is not every day you get to race against your childhood hero’s like Tom King, John Bertrand, Grant Simmer and Iain Murray etc. It is also not every day you start on a 1.2km start line, have a 5 km upwind leg with 95 keel boats. Racing was pretty tight with some pretty big scores. Will and I’s competitive nature really came through. We were on separate teams which made the racing interesting. Coming into the final day, Will and I were top two overall and finished this way. However, the points were very close to the top six. It was very rewarding for both Will and I to hold on to these positions with the pressure of the final day. This experience was invaluable for us towards Tokyo2020. We are now shifting our focus back to the Olympic program. Later this month we will head to Japan for sail testing before competing in Sail Sydney and Sail Melbourne. It will be a busy racing schedule coming up. The Australian Sailing Team sub-site at SYC Hollywell will start to get into action again shortly as we start to shift our training back to the Gold Coast. During the month of October, also saw the completion of my double master’s degree in Project Management and Property Development and Valuation at Bond University. I have been trying to complete these master’s degrees since 2012 so it was a big relief to have now graduated. The importance of balancing education with sport has been important to me over the years to have something to fall back on, for the time I get a real job. Any offers? What made October particularly challenging for my family was all of this was done whilst preparing for the birth of my little girl Zoe. She was born one week after the conclusion Etchells Worlds and a few weeks after my master’s thesis was due. Not an easy time in the Belcher house hold but we made it. I guess the key message is just how important good preparation and planning is. Before I finish, I just wanted to mention how proud I am of the SYC Performance group. We had a great camp together at the end of September during Queensland Youth Week at Yeppoon with some great performances from our lasers, 420s and Opti’s. We also had two members, Blake Wilson and Angus Sherring, of our performance group compete in the Etchells Worlds; whilst Leigh Lomas competed in the offshore Cabbage Tree race in Sydney. It is so great to see our sailors excess at this level. The future generation of sailors are coming! The weekly session we are doing up at Hollywell have been great. 26 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club
