I am delighted to introduce the program for SA History Week 2008 – this year celebrating its fifth birthday. The 2008 program contains an exciting mix of exhibitions, tours and special events and offers the special privilege of access to some of the State’s heritage treasures, open to the public for this week only. In the past five years History Week has gone from strength to strength. It has well and truly earned its place in the State’s cultural calendar and I was delighted to see it recognised last year with a Ruby award. The award was for community impact and involvement and that has been a particular strength of History Week from the beginning. Each year the program’s success has depended on the support and involvement of community volunteers statewide. On behalf of the South Australian Government I would like to pay tribute to the many hundreds of volunteers who work with the History Trust to make History Week possible. Your contribution is the key to preserving our history into the future. I hope that you will enjoy the varied events offered in this program and that SA History Week 2008 will offer some special insights into our unique history and heritage. John Hill MINISTER ASSISTING THE PREMIER IN THE ARTS The History Trust of South Australia has once again arranged for doors to heritage buildings to swing open as part of this year’s Open Doors: Unlocking History program. Hopefully, this will tempt you to take the opportunity to learn more about South Australia’s rich history and cultural and built heritage. This year I am especially pleased that the Department for Environment and Heritage is supporting the SA History Week 2008 program in a year that marks the 30th anniversary of our State’s first comprehensive built heritage legislation established in 1978 and updated in 1993 - now known as the Heritage Places Act 1993. The State and Local Heritage Places participating in this year’s Open Doors program are included on our State or a Local Heritage register. Each place has its own unique story to tell and at the same time offers us a greater understanding of our diverse history and evolution of our State. Visiting some of these places will help dispel the myth that heritage buildings are ‘stuck in the past’. Although many of our heritage places may have outlived the use that they were originally designed and built for they can continue to provide a great canvas for ‘new’ and continued use. Participating again in this year’s Open Doors Program is the former Treasury Building in Adelaide. The old Treasury Building has been sensitively adapted to become the Medina Grand Hotel. Perhaps not as grand, but certainly equally as interesting, is the former Railway Goods Shed on the Goolwa Wharf. This wonderful old building now houses a micro-brewery - the aptly named Steam Exchange Brewery. The History Trust’s Open Doors program includes many more examples of places that have an ongoing and continued use. It is worth remembering that continued use of our heritage places also contributes to the sustainability of our environment because it reduces land-fill waste and reduces waste of ‘embodied energy’ – the energy used to construct a new building as well as the energy originally used to build the heritage place. Owners and custodians of heritage-listed places who take this opportunity to open their doors to the public do so because they are proud and pleased to share their piece of South Australia’s heritage with you and I congratulate them on their continuing efforts. I urge you to make the most of this chance to step inside and ‘unlock history’ within the walls of our heritage places and enjoy the many other wonderful and exciting activities that have been arranged for you as a part of this year’s History Week Program. Gail Gago Minister for Environment and Conservation SA HISTORY WEEK iv
The Adelaide City Council is proud to be a sponsor of SA History Week in South Australia – in a year when our highly successful Heritage Incentive Scheme is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Scheme has been central to the Council’s commitment to heritage throughout the City and North Adelaide for the past 20 years. It provides financial help and technical advice to owners of heritage properties in order to ensure effective on-going use of Adelaide’s historic buildings. Among the highlights of SA History Week 2008 will be an Adelaide City Council bus tour showcasing successful HIS projects, as well as our on-going project to restore the historic Beresford Arms in Gilles Street. History Week is an important opportunity for South Australians to connect with their State’s history and heritage by visiting a range of buildings and locations that are not normally open to the public. I would encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of History Week and enjoy our City’s heritage. Michael Harbison Lord Mayor of Adelaide The History Trust of South Australia is proud to present the 2008 SA History Week program. This is the fifth successive History Week, with a veritable treasure trove of activities and events to entice, enlighten and entertain. The events program is many and varied, from museum exhibitions, guided walks, archaeological sites and special tours and lectures. A great favourite of History Week is always the Open Doors component, providing a unique opportunity to see inside some of our heritage gems not generally open to the public. This year we introduce some particularly special places, some open for the very first time. Each year the South Australian historical community joins with us to present the History Week program. Our community partners come from every region of the state and all walks of life. I would like to thank them most sincerely for their continuing support of the program and for their commitment to preserving the history of the State. I would especially like to thank those private owners who are prepared to welcome visitors into their heritage properties. This is a very special privilege, unique to History Week. I hope that you will find plenty of interest in this program and that, through the events on offer, you discover something new and different in the South Australian story. South Australian Glass Negatives Collection The historical photographs used in the SA History Week program are from the South Australian Glass Negatives Collection. This Collection has a very interesting history. Between 1890 and 1960 the Department of Lands was responsible for the official photographic record of South Australia. Initially, a government photographic unit, using equipment already owned by the Department of Lands’ Survey Department, began to record government achievements, state celebrations and, for a fee, took photographs for annual reports for other government departments and for parliamentary records. Over the years, this growing collection also became a repository for photographs specially commissioned by the South Australian Government, including those taken by Frank Hurley in 1935 for the State’s Centenary Committee to record the State after 100 years of European settlement (1836-1936). Shearers’ hut location unknown c1900-10 GN0086 By the 1970s the large glass plates used by the unit were little known and seldom required. The Department of Lands decided to send them to the South Australian Archives (now State Records). In the mid 1980s the then Constitutional Museum, a museum of the newly established History Trust of South Australia, undertook the mammoth task of re-photographing the glass negatives onto 35mm conventional film negatives and cataloguing the 14 000 images, using workers employed under the Hawke Labor Government’s Commonwealth Employment Program (CEP). Since 1985, the images and catalogue have been available at the History Trust of South Australia for research and use in publications. Extra information and corrections were added to the catalogue by volunteer George Brooks who spent many years at the History Trust as well as at State Records identifying the images that were a mystery to the 1980s cataloguers. The actual glass negatives remain with State Records. The History Trust holds the only catalogue and copy set of the Collection. Recorded within the Collection are ceremonial events of all kinds, the day-to- Opening of Clarendon Bridge 1919 GN02594 day progress of major public works and the growth of townships, ports, industry and trade. The Collection shows South Australians at work and at play. In short, the collection covers everything that interested governments either directly or indirectly. In late 2005 work commenced on a digitisation project for this significant Collection. Once completed, by June 2008, it will give researchers a much quicker and more efficient means of tapping into this wonderful photographic record. If you wish to either browse or obtain images from this unique Collection, please contact Lynn Drew, Information Resources Manager, History Trust of South Australia on 8203 9873, or email ldrew@history.sa.gov.au. The Glass Negatives Collection images used in this booklet will be available for viewing on the History Trust website after Friday 2 May. The South Australian Tourism Commission celebrates its centenary 1908 - 2008 In 1908 the State Tourism Bureau opened its doors with the job of promoting ‘the beauty spots and resources of the State’. It also established a series of ‘national pleasure resorts’, which included the Naracoorte Caves and Morialta Falls. In 1910 its role was expanded to encourage South Australian trade and immigration. Later its staff managed the highly successful 1936 Centenary celebrations - the precursor of its considerable involvement in managing and sponsoring events for the State. The Commission has played a significant part in the State’s economic and cultural life over the decades. In 1982, it was the first State tourism agency to develop State tourism plans, and throughout the series of plans to emerge Morialta Adelaide Hills 1935 GN05747 since then, the State’s history and culture have been consistently recognised as key assets. Opening of Waterfall Gully Kiosk 1912 GN00329 A strong partnership between history and tourism makes good sense. Tourism is an extremely important industry for the State as a whole and for many communities especially. Tourists these days want to know more about the places they visit. They are hungry for good stories. The history sector has the stories and the tourism sector wants as many people as possible to hear those stories. The South Australian Tourism Commission works closely with South Australia’s many cultural and historical organisations. It is delighted to be involved with SA History Week in this its centenary year. Many of the activities on offer provide a perfect opportunity for you to be a part of the centenary celebrations. And so, for SA History Week, be a tourist in your own suburb, town, district and State. Windy Point c1950s GN14896 SA HISTORY WEEK viii
The Rundle History Trail There’s more than food, fashion and retail therapy on offer in Rundle Street and Rundle Mall during SA History Week. Take a walk down this vibrant retail precinct and discover the history behind the shop windows. Grab a map from the Visitor Information Centre at the King William Street end of the Mall or visit the History Trust website, www.history.sa.gov.au Did you know? Surveyor-General Colonel William Light envisaged Victoria Square as the retail centre of Adelaide. But shopkeepers favoured Hindley and Rundle Streets. Though narrower, these streets were closer to residential North Adelaide, the road to the port and fresh water from the River Torrens. Rundle Street looking east from Beehive Corner c1920s GN08120A Rundle Street was named after John Rundle, a director of the South Australian Company which established the province in 1836 in a joint venture with the British Government. Rundle never came to South Australia, but owned the original ‘Beehive Corner’. Shops have changed. Over a century ago, there were cabinet makers, saddlers, coach builders, a billiard maker, tin smith, upholsterer, pianoforte maker, ginger- beer brewer, maker of picture frames, coppersmith who manufactured stills, straw-bonnet maker, portmanteau (suitcase) manufacturer and an umbrella maker. There were 11 hotels. The street has gone from dirt to tarmac and seen a passing parade of coaches, horse buses, horse trams, electric trolley buses, motorised buses and private cars. Rundle Street became so crowded, with cars, buses and pedestrians jostling for space, that in September 1976 the Dunstan Government created Rundle Mall. The Rundle Mall fountain flowed with champagne on opening day! Rundle Street looking west 1937 GN04316 Do you remember? Department stores, such as Birks, Cravens, John Martin’s, Foy and Gibson? Specialty shops, such as Lawrence’s for tobacco, Balfour’s for cakes and pies, Ezywalkin for shoes, Hambly Clark for guns, and Gladys Sym Choon’s China Gift Store?
