Dower Lake Recreation Area 24615 Thunder Rd, Staples Dower Lake Recreation Area is the perfect summer destination - for a day or for the whole season. Located 2 miles west of Staples on Thunder Road. One of a kind 612’ fishing pier (new 2008), softball fields, Frisbee golf course, basketball court, swimming beach, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball courts, picnic shelter, 45 Fish MN’s Longest inland Pier unit campground, and picnic areas. Right here in Staples is the longest fishing pier in Minnesota located at Dower Lake. Take a leisurely stroll 612 feet into Dower Lake. This highly photographed pier is perfect for fishing, or take a stroll and relax at the end of the pier on one of the benches and enjoy the view! This iconic pier is one of our favorite photo spots in every season and a fun stop on your travels. AREA ATTRACTIONS/ACTIVITIES 2
Ice Fish Dower Lake is a local favorite for fishing during the winter. Go old school with just your auger, super warm clothes, and a fishing line. Or choose to fish in style and bring your whole fish house! Just remember to always check the ice thickness before stepping on the ice. Need gear or bait? Visit Staples ACE Hardware or Staples True Value. Both stores carry a wide selection of fishing gear and offer helpful fishing tips. Swimming and Boating Summer wouldn’t be summer without time at the lake. And in Staples, you can enjoy the natural beauty of Dower Lake Recreation Area (DLRA). It is located a quick 2 miles west of town and has everything your family needs for a great day on and at the lake. Put the boat in the water for a quiet day of fishing or get the kids screaming as you pull them on a tube. Then head to the swimming beach and wiggle your toes in Dower Lake’s sandy shore. Living Legacy Gardens 26505 County Road 2, Staples This ten-acre garden just outside of the downtown area has a park-like setting you will want to discover over and over again to see what is newly blooming spring through fall. With an orchard, vineyard, and a native prairie there are several serene spots to relax, play, or picnic as you unplug and unwind. Other features of this incredible garden include a children’s and fairy garden! Staples Historic Depot First Avenue NE & Fourth St NE, Staples Immerse yourself in local history at the newly renovated Staples Historic Depot. The Staples Historical Society recently made $400,000 of improvements to the building’s structure while retaining its rich and beautiful past. It’s open to the public - visit anytime. This beautiful environmental park offers walking trails, a footbridge across Leaf River, and a unique Bogwalk. The Bogwalk stretches fully from one side of the bog to the other. Tubing the River Gather the group and hang out on the Crow Wing River. Tubing is always a popular warm-weather activity. Lay back, chill out, and enjoy the hot sun and cool water. Bring your own tubes or rent them from Staples True Value or Wahoo Valley-Restaurant. There are various landing points along the Crow Wing River. You can download or print the Crow Wing River Water Trail Map from the DNR. A popular family-friendly tubing route is from McGivern Park to Orville’s Landing. Old Wadena Park This environmental Park feels like a condensed State Park. Here you can explore the bog walk and learn about the special echo system bogs maintain, after passing and enjoying a photo op at Warrior Tree. Grab your pet and explore some of the the Crow Wing River; cross a most picturesque bridge that leads you to several trails where the trees canopy your way to a beautiful open field. *The Old Wadena Rendezvous is the 2nd weekend AREA ATTRACTIONS/ACTIVITIES of the month in August. Camping Camping out is a summer staple. Campfires, roasted marshmallows, telling stories, and sleeping under the stars. Want to go “old school” and pitch a tent? Rustic camping is available at both Dower Lake Recreation Area (DLRA) and Old Wadena Park. Need the creature comforts of your RV? DLRA’s campground has 14 seasonal sites and 20 electric sites available for rent. Enjoy free firewood, hot showers, and full-utility services. Camping gear and supplies can be found at Staples True Value and Staples Ace Hardware. Stock up on groceries – remember the marshmallows! – at either Jon’s Family Foods or Ernies’ Food Market. 9
Music in the Park Sundays in July and August feature amazing music in an extremely relaxed environment. Head to Northern Pacific Park at 7pm, bring some chairs or a blanket, and enjoy watching the show. The Staples-Motley Arts Council brings a wide variety of local, regional, and national performers to Staples for their summer Music in the Park series. Central MN Barn Quilt Trail The Central Mn Barn Quilt Trail winds through the heart of Staple and the 4 surrounding counties. These unique and colorfully painted wooden squares have a rich history in rural areas throughout the United States. Each barn quilt tells a story and has a special meaning for its owner. With over 120 barn quilts you are sure to find one that inspires you. Think of it as an open air art gallery. Maps are available at the Staples Historic Depot, local restaurants, hotels, and businesses. Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe The Vintage Golf Course isn’t just for warm- weather fun. Nordic skiers appreciate the winding trails through the woods and gently sloping hills. The scenic landscape is breathtaking in every season. The trails are maintained by local volunteers. Skiers must bring their own equipment. Do you prefer to walk rather than ski? Pine Grove Park, Dower Lake Recreation Area, and The Vintage Golf Course are great spots to get in a long (or short) snowshoeing adventure. Lakewood’s Sledding Hill Winter activities include well-groomed snowmobile trails but there is also another activity that draws families, young and old alike - the Sledding Hill at Lakewood Health System located on County 83. Lakewood’s hill is a great place to gather you friends or family and spend a few hours or half a day sledding down and running up! Parking is just at the base of the back side of the hill of Lakewood Health System;s employee parking lot. Some days you might even catch the helicopters landing or taking off from just across the parking lot. This is a favorite winter location for community members and travelers to gather to catch up. Everyone from the young to young at heart enjoys sledding, tubing or even tobogganing down the hill. This hill is expansive enough to do all at the same time! Snowmobile Have a need for speed? Staples is the place for you. Our central Minnesota location is at the heart of miles and miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Trails abound to the north, south, east, and west. Ride in a new direction each day! Pick up your printed map at local businesses. Or find all the trails online at the DNR website. Staples True Value, Wahoo Valley Bar & Grill, and Timberlake Hotel allow snowmobilers to use their parking lots as staging areas. These businesses are located right by the trail. Park your vehicle, don your gear, and head on out to the trail. It’s that easy. Make a day of it or stay all weekend!
