The event allows astronomy enthusiasts to share ideas, learn about a range of astronomical topics, get together with old friends, and make new ones. The event draws astronomers from North Carolina and surrounding states. *Tri*Star* is free and open to anyone with an interest in astronomy. There is a change in venue for this year’s edition of *Tri*Star*. Because of ongoing renovation at GTCC, our traditional space in the Applied Technologies Center is not available, so we are shifting across campus to the Koury Hospitality Careers Center, site of our annual Jo Cline Memorial Lecture in the fall. Staunton River Star Party Spring Installment, March 4-10, 2019 http://www.chaosastro.org/starparty/ Staunton River State Park in Halifax County, Virginia near Scottsburg and about 30 miles east of South Boston, Virginia. For those that have not attended this party it is distinguished by being held at the newest International Dark Sky Park in the eastern US. Staunton River State Park has been incredibly supportive of the party and dark sky preservation in the area. Plus they are just plain nice to us! If you can make it to this star party, it’s worth your time and a great experience to observe the sky with other astronomy enthusiasts in a beautiful setting under a dark sky. The Eagle Lake Observatory consists of the Onan Observatory, the Sylvia A. Casby Observatory and the HotSpot Classroom. Public Star Parties at the Eagle Lake Observatory is the opportunity for MAS members to share our passion of the night sky with the public. Eagle Lake Public Nights are perfect for anyone wanting to be fully immersed in what a star party can be. If the sky is clear, we can begin observing well before sunset at whatever daytime things we can find. Planets, stars and of course the sun are all possible and worth seeing. We have the standard “white light” solar filters
for observing sunspots as well as several telescopes dedicated to solar observing with H-alpha filters that show solar granulation and prominences. On a clear night, the sky is literally the limit… planets, stars, galaxies, nebula, clusters, comets, asteroids, we’ve even seen a Dwarf Planet or two. Virtually anything astronomical can be observed and explained with the volunteer staff at a public night. In addition, many members and even non- members bring their own telescopes and set up around the observatory and are willing to share what they are observing with the public. Monte Vista Crane Festival Mar 8, 2019 to Mar 10, 2019 https://mvcranefest.org/ Monte Vista, Colorado Every year, like clockwork, nearly 20,000 Sandhill Cranes descend on Colorado’s scenic San Luis Valley for a six-week stopover to rest and refuel before continuing their northward spring migration. They perform a courtship dance — leaping and bowing while raising and lowering their wings, and making a croaking sound to one another. Once a male and female bond they form a pair for life. Activities during the Monte Vista Crane Festival include photography workshops, interpreter- -led bus tours to view the cranes, raptors, and places of interest. The festival is a
collaborative effort between The Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges (slvrefuges.org), The Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Monte Vista. A visit to the Monte Vista Crane Festival is an opportunity to see an amazing natural spectacle as well as experience a unique local community. Contact: Deb Callahan, mvcfpub@gmail.com.
