PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Everyone, By all accounts the Outlaws weekend at Kapunda was very good, with interesting tours including one spooky local pub, great dancing and plenty of rain. T&T Rounds celebrated their 28th Birthday in June, congratulations to Thelma and her dancers, it was a good day of round dancing and lots of fun. Currently many learner classes are being run across the State, I’m enjoying helping these new dancers at both Adelaide Outlaws and Diggers Delights, the learners are having a good time and some are picking up the moves very well. It’s with sadness I must report that Life Member and former Society Treasurer Allan Penhall has passed away. He did a lot for square dancing including serving as Society Treasurer for a total of ten years and a key supporter of the Allemanders program. He will be missed by many of us, a good man who was well liked by all. Scoot Backs 8th Birthday on the 14th June was a very pleasant night and everyone had a great time. Don’t forget the Society membership fees are now due, renew to get your discounts on the State Convention and Society dances for the year. Talking about Society dances our July dance is at the Marion RSL 13th July, starting with Round Dancing, Plus and then Mainstream, don’t forget to bring a plate for supper please, details on page six. Thank you Murray Dempsey DISCLAIMER: The South Australian Square Dance Society Inc. and the Editor DO NOT ACCEPT any responsibility for any goods or services advertised, or statements made, in this magazine. SASDS COMMITTEE NEWS Great news – at last a supplier has been found in the USA for the Learner Books. An order has been placed and we will soon be in touch with Clubs about availability. Red, white & blue decorations to suit the British theme will be up at Marion RSL on Saturday 13th July for the Callers and Society dance. Come & join in the fun. SASDS Membership is now due, check out the flyer on your club noticeboard for all the information and benefits. your Club representative has forms for renewing or the form is available online at http://www.squaredancingsa.com/sasds-membership-form-2019.pdf Registration numbers are building up for our State Convention at Naracoorte on the last weekend in August. The conveners report that although all caravan park cabins are booked, there is still plenty of accommodation available. If you need help to register with TryBooking, just ask at your club. Dawn Elliott informed the Committee that during the National Convention in Deloraine, Graham Elliott presented South Australia’s bid to host the 63rd National Square Dance Convention in 2022. This was accepted and congratulations to the team involved in the bids preparation. Everyone will look forward to more news! A vote will be taken at the July 13 SASDS/SACA dance to formally elect the group who looked at venues and put the bid together. They would then become the 2022 National Convention committee. Cheers, Pauline FROM THE EDITORS DESK As editor I enjoy reading about all the hard working committees that support our wonderful callers, there’s a few examples in this issue. Recently Maryka and I attended the 23rd Birthday weekend of the Geelong Square Dancers. For this celebration the dancers and their caller Darren Taylor had run numerous Bunnings sausage sizzles to raise money so that American caller Pat Carnathan could be guest caller on this special occasion. Darren and Pat have a strong friendship after Darrens visits to the USA, Pats presence was the highlight of the weekend for Darren and was only possible with the amazing support of his committed dancers. Of course you don’t have to be on a committee to be involved, the regular dishwasher or chair stacker also show their support for their club and caller and reflect the comradery of our wonderful Square Dance community. Happy reading, Stephen 4
Both clubs have celebrated their birthdays during May & June. On 19th May Sunset Twirlers celebrated their 24th Birthday and on 2nd June T & T Rounds celebrated their 28th Birthday. Attendances were good and both were enjoyable evenings of fun and friendship. Whilst both these birthdays are not significant it took me some time to realise that there is actually something special happening here. In the history of round dancing clubs in this state, we have not had any clubs reach 20 years before. Now we have two clubs who have both passed this milestone, with T & T Rounds now over 25 and Sunset Twirlers set to achieve 25 during 2020. So congratula- tions to both clubs on your birthdays, and to Don & Jan Stephens on 10 years of Round Dancing. The date has been set for our 17th Round Dance Festival to be held on 3 & 4 October 2020. Our festivals are only held ever 2nd year so this amounts to 34 years in total and as far as I know it is the longest running round dance event in Australia, and well known for our Choreographers Showcase where local choreography is presented. Congratulations to Anne Tulloch who has been ap- pointed Convenor. On 15 June 2019 we had our AGM and the following people were elected to the committee Anne Tulloch, Vice President, Pat Markwick, Secretary and Thelma McCue, Susan Boyle & Terri Pearce as committee members. Les Tulloch, Publicity Officer Don & Jan Stephens receive their 10 year award T & T Rounds Les & Anne Tulloch, Peter & Glynis Beadle Left Alistair & Susan Boyle T & T Rounds 28th Birthday 5

Nothing like a feast and a dance and our Pancake Night was just that. Again our regular “Pancake King” cooked and flipped pancakes most of the night and these were served with an assortment of toppings. Great to have our new learners taking part in the fun too. Thanks to all who came along - we hope you enjoyed the food and fun. Coming up shortly will be our French night. We’ll celebrate Bastille Day with red, white and blue colour themes and we’d love you all to join us. Berets and stripes are in order and a little French music too. This will be followed by our annual Fathers’ Day dance in September where the theme is blue and our gentlemen members are afforded free admission. Then, before you know it - it’s our 34th Birthday. Looking forward to our Roaring 20s theme and it will be held in our Macedonian Hall on a Saturday night. Please enter the spirit of things by dressing up and it will be a basket supper. Recently we have been enjoying our new “Second Wednesday” dinner outings. On the night when the Plus club isn’t open, we have an open invitation to join us for dinner at local restaurants. A nice way to socialise. Graham & Dawn www.adelaideoutlaws.com 7
We welcomed visitors during May with Ranata and Jens from Mountain Devils Square Dance club in NSW on their way home to Sydney. Eileen, Frank and Teresa with three children called in on their way home to Greenfinches club in WA. The children had a delightful time making origami creatures whilst Mum and grandparents danced. Welcome back to John and Lynnette after a couple of weeks travelling Queens- land and NSW. Safe travels to Stuart and Bernie as they venture to the UK for a few weeks. A few of our dancers trav- elled to Geelong over the June long weekend. What a fabulous birthday event for Darren and the Geelong Dancers with Pat Carnathan from USA. Thankyou for a terrific weekend. We look forward to Xmas in July in the Coonawarra. Lets see if the jolly fellow in red calls in. Even though early bird has closed there is still plenty of time before 22nd August to register for our birthday and the SA State Convention. Best of luck keeping warm. Alan & Chris 10
JVC Square Dance members are still dancing. In the last two weeks we have had a full square to dance and last week Jock danced very well as a right hand dancer. Unfortunately one of our couples has gone to Queensland for three months so we may be struggling again for a while. Luckily with the help of a few pills I may have to dance and call as well. As we are not dancing in July we have ceased the flyer drop and will recommence at the end of July – about 2000 of the 4000 have been done. Happy Dancing Everyone Jacqueline and John. https://jvcsquaredance.com DIGGERS Our dancers are a mixed between Mainstream, Mainstreamers that are returning and ten learners. We are dancing two sets DELIGHTS most mornings. We have now closed from taking new learners. We danced a demo for the RSL on May 31st. All the learners danced with most of them coming along in Square Dancing outfits. The Mainstreamers also did a set as well and Scotty made us run. After that we got some of the RSL patrons up. A great time was had by all. Over the long weekend we attended a Quiz night at the RSL and made up a table from Diggers Delights. Someone won a chicken meat tray, a very nice way to fill the freezer. We bid goodbye to one of our learners Terry as he has now got a full time job, hope all goes well for you. Don’t forget to join us on our Facebook group Diggers Delights. Chris Wood. Since the last issue of Round Up was written before our birthday, I can say yes it was a great day. Congratulations to Jan & Don on achieving their 10 year award. Susan & Alistair had the honor, as our longest serving members, of cutting the cake. Also thanks were given to Shirley, Anne & Les for helping with Cueing. And of cause that was followed by our usual wonderful spread. Congratulations to Bernie & Terry on their recent engagement and what about that massive chocolate cake they brought. They are from our latest Learners Class which are progressing very well. Last week they had their first taste of Foxtrot, next month they will learn Two Step. It was nice to have Monica & Terry join us for the day and Bev & Bruce visiting us. So the next big thing is the State Convention where we hope we will some of you on the dance floor. Till next time Regards Thelma 11
Our recent Bad Taste Theme resulted in many ‘odd bods’ walking through the door who were dressed with no coordination & looked rather daggy if not colourful. We thank Deidre for supplying a never ending variety of deco- rations which add to the spirit of theme nights. With visitors on occasions from other clubs and learners we almost take up the entire hall!!!!!! It has been marvelous to watch Ursula & David move straight into mainstream as they return to square dancing. One week we could have had an extra theme night called ‘Ailments’. We had dancers with cricked hips, bursitis, knee complaints, planters fasciitis & lacerations. It was totally random that this all happened in the same week. At Plus practice, Penny was not dancing due to a hip complaint. Feeling the cold, Judy provided her with a ‘granny rug’ blankets & a stuffed toy friend to keep her company. When the outdoor entertainment area heater went on for the dancers she abandoned all rugs!!!! Our club runs with everyone helping out. Our resident supper time dishwasher is John. He unassumingly starts his self assigned job each week without any fuss. Ros, Penny & Mark manage the main setting up on dance nights & all other members contribute. We are such a cohesive & harmonious lot!!!! Our esteemed President Leon, attended a recent dance after recovering from some health issues. We appreciate his continued involvement & know that he would do anything to be out on the dance floor with us. Our next theme night is ‘Down Memory Lane’. Some of us have a long time span to select from but that’s half the fun. Ros will be attending the North Coast Caller School at Lismore to further her knowledge & skill. She has really taken this important role on with passion, determination & enthusiasm. Gail 12
Once again another memorable night for our Carnival Theme. We were very pleased at the wonderful help from our committee in the planning and staging of the night. Ingrid once again came up with a beautiful backdrop. Thanks to Anne & Rose for the other decorations and to Phyl for helping set up the kitchen and supper, and Dennis for setting up the hall. Speaking of supper we had all carnival food, hot dogs, popcorn and fairy floss, absolutely delicious Thanks to Ingrid for bringing the fairy floss and popcorn ma- chines. Les of course did as many singing calls to the theme as well as background music. And of course what else do you do at the carnival and that is play games in side show alley. We had had tossing the ping pong balls into the buckets which you think would be easy except you had to bounce the ball as well. Trevor won that game. Then we had egg and spoon race except you had to weave in and out of cones as well as transfer the egg to you partner (simples). Anne and Vicki won that race. The last was similar to egg tossing and catching except we used bean bags (not so much mess when it goes wrong) and after each toss you had to step back. Gary & Sally won that and were almost at the full length of the hall. Finally thank you for all who dressed colourful to suit the theme. Happy Dancing from Anne & Les http://sunsettwirlers.com/ Spanish Night 16 July 2019 Dancing from 7pm Dress the part or just red or yellow Tea, Coffee & Water provided Bring something for supper 13
Sunset Twirlers Carnival Night Backdrop The Box Office Team Tulloch at it again This picture was taken at the end of the night and we were playing “The Carnival is Over” hence the hand swaying (by some) 14
Well what a night it was for Scootbacks 8th birthday. We had almost four squares in attendance helping us celebrate, which was fabulous. We had a few apologies but we didn't let that dampen our spirits. Our learners joined in with a learners hour before the Mainstream started ,then they stayed to watch the rest of us dance. The cake looked delicious with our president Jeff , vice president Michael and treasurer Marita cutting it. We would like to thank everyone that attended even though it was a Friday night. Keep warm and have fun, De Square Lady. 15
It was good to see so many polished crowns and tiaras at our Queen's Birthday dance, and if there had been a prize for best dressed Yvonne would have been the winner. She looked magnificent in her full regalia. We also celebrated Heather Coutts' 80th birthday. The strawberries and cream and birthday cake were a delicious addition to supper. It was good to have Jan Woodget, her daughter and granddaughter join us for the evening. Jan and Heather share birthdays, and their friendship goes back many years. As we welcome back some holidaymakers we also wish those setting off a safe trip. By the time this goes to print we will have visited Scoot Back Squares for their birthday, congratulations to them, it is sure to be an enjoyable night. Happy dancing everyone, Pat. www.wildfrontiersa.com It is nearly July and time for the 2020 calendar to come out and start noting the dates. Next year the Kanella/Wild Frontier weekend away will be 20 March 2020. And now for something completely different the weekend will be held in Burra. For all of those crossword nuts out there yes Burra looks like Berri, but the landscape is very different. We remember fondly Alan Penhall who passed away recently. I remember he and Jean on the dance floor, if you were in their set you were assured of a good laugh. Maryka That month has flown by. A huge thank you to our visitors - Jeff and Elaine, Marty and Uncle Bruce. A wide variance of dancing abilities made for a hugely fun night last week. Once again we are coming up for the time when dancers are either at meetings or working their shift on Monday night for the next two weeks. Congratulations to Jeff and Susan on becoming Grandparents for the first time. Now there's a new challenge ahead for you. See you all soon at the State Convention. Happy Dancing from Shirley and David. 16
