EXPECTATIONS TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY. When I look back at the day that we closed the school in March, I remember what a shock this was for all of you. It was as much a shock for me as well. I have never known a moment like this in my lifetime and I hope never to experience it again. In lockdown your teachers continued to support you by setting work, giving video feedback and responding to your concerns. We did our best to support you so that you could continue your education from home. We also carefully thought about your mental well-being by making changes to the work we set so that it was manageable. We enjoyed supporting a small number of students on our site to allow key workers to get to work and we enjoyed seeing our fantastic students in Year 10 and 12 for lessons in June. Our experiences of working with these students were very positive. When I look back at the last six months, I am very proud of the work that was completed by students. I am proud of the way that students organised routines and took steps to put their mental health first. I hope that in time you will have a chance to reflect on this significant world event and what it meant for you. We have all learnt the value of school as we learn the value of everything, in the end, by its absence. That is why we have spent the summer making plans to support you on your return next week because we know that we have no learning time to lose. This handbook is your guide to returning to school and it will form your induction day. We have a fantastic team in place to support you and we have hygiene measures to keep you safe. It is essential that everyone follows the expectations and hygiene controls at all times. It is important that you read this handbook with your parent or carer. We have written this handbook to remove uncertainty and to give you peace of mind. You will have an opportunity to ask questions during your induction day to help you prepare. The stage is now set for you to make a safe return to school. You will have the support that you need so that you catch up. We know what incredible students we have, and we are here for you so that you can achieve your dreams. It is more important than ever that you take every opportunity so that you can succeed. SUPPORT WHO DO I NEED TO GO TO IF I NEED HELP? All members of staff have a duty of care to and will provide a safe environment and support for students. Who do I need to go to for help? • Your form tutor will be your first port of call for any concerns. Behaviour Support Manager – Mrs Osborne KEEPING OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY SAFE HYGIENE EXPECTATIONS All students must follow all hygiene controls to reduce the risk of transmission (COVID- 19). You will be expected to remember the 5 key elements of our safety strategy. 1. Do not attend school if you or anyone in your house has coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms 2. Clean hands thoroughly more often than usual. 3. ‘Catch it, bin it, kill it’ 4. Keep our site clean 5. Keep your distance 1. Do not attend school if you or anyone in your house has coronavirus (COVID- 19) symptoms It is important that you do not come into the school if you have coronavirus (COVID- 19) symptoms, or have tested positive in at least the last 10 days. These symptoms are: • high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature) • new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual) • loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal 2. Clean hands thoroughly more often than usual. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an easy virus to kill when it is on skin. This can be done with soap and running water or hand sanitiser.
The school has hand sanitising units fitted around the site that you will be expected to use: • When you arrive at school • When you return from breaks • When you change rooms • Before and after you eat You will use a hand sanitiser when you arrive to your form tutor base. You should bring in a small bottle of hand sanitiser (non-alcoholic), a packet of tissues and hand wipes for personal use. 3. ‘Catch it, bin it, kill it’ Germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Dispose of your tissue by putting it into a bin. Do not touch surfaces and make sure that you clean your hands as soon as you can. It is important that you bring your own packet of tissues and hand wipes to ensure that germs are not spread. All rooms will be well ventilated and classroom doors will remain open to ensure good respiratory hygiene. You must not close doors or windows. 4. Keep our site clean We have increased the amount of cleaning staff who will be on our site to ensure that rooms are cleaned more often including toilets and canteen spaces. You must make sure that you do not drop litter, avoid unnecessary touching of surfaces and clean your hands thoroughly after using the toilet. You must wear face coverings on school bus services and public transport but will not be permitted to wear them on site. Based on the government guidance there is no need to wear a face covering in school because this adds a contamination risk and our school has a detailed system of controls will be in place to keep everyone safe. 5. Keep your distance Minimising contacts and mixing between people reduces transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19). To reduce the risk of transmission you will be expected to know, understand and follow our school plan for each of these features that will be explained in this handbook: • Arrival points using the ‘first available’ of three, supervised entrances • Walk with purpose to your tutor base in the morning • Follow the corridor system using the arrows in place • Do not move furniture in lessons or break venues • Follow your seating plan on arrival to lessons • Do not enter the ‘Teacher Zone’ at the front of your class
• Maintain a safe distance if you are using public transportation • Do not gather in groups before or after school • Staggered breaks, lunch times and venues • Dismissal points using the ‘first available’ of three, supervised exits NOTE FOR PARENTS Students who report symptoms at Student Services will be supported in the COVID isolation suite which is located in the visitor’s reception area. Before taking them to this room a member of the student services team will adopt PPE and then escort the student. They will be moved to a room where they will be isolated behind a closed door with toilet facilities available. A window will be opened for ventilation. If it is not possible to isolate them then they will go to a venue which allows them to be at least 2 metres away from other people. Parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. If the student needs to go to the bathroom while waiting to be collected, they will use a separate bathroom. The bathroom will be cleaned and disinfected using standard cleaning products before being used by anyone else. PPE will be worn by staff caring for the child while they await collection. Parents will collect their child from the Main Reception entrance which will be unlocked by the site technician to allow access. Parents will be advised to follow ‘stay at home: guidance for households with possible or confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection’, which sets out that they should self-isolate for at least 10 days and should arrange to have a test to see if they have coronavirus (COVID-19). Parents will be informed that their child should: • Self-isolate for 10 days • Arrange a test • Access Show My Homework to keep up with work set by curriculum areas Parents will be informed that they should: • Ensure all members of their household self-isolate for 14 days from the first date at which symptoms were present • Read updated government guidance which will be printed and provided on collection • Update the school attendance officer regarding test results
If anyone tests positive whilst not experiencing symptoms but develop symptoms during the isolation period, they should restart the 10-day isolation period from the day they develop symptoms. Other members of their household (including any siblings) should self-isolate for 14 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms. Parents will contact our attendance officer, Mrs DeVido by emailing: LDeVido@robertsmyth.tgacademy.org.uk with updated information before a student returns and so that the school can report accurate information to Public Health England and maintain records necessary to ensure that outbreaks are prevented. NHS Track and Trace Members of staff, students and parents must be ready and willing to: • book a test if they or their child are displaying symptoms. Staff and students must not come into the school if they have symptoms, and must be sent home to self-isolate if they develop them in school. All children can be tested, including children under 5, but children aged 11 and under will need to be helped by their parents/carers if using a home testing kit • provide details of anyone they or their child have been in close contact with if they were to test positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) or if asked by NHS Test and Trace • self-isolate if they have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), or if anyone in their household develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) Anyone who displays symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) can and should get a test. Tests can be booked online through the NHS testing and tracing for coronavirus website, or ordered by telephone via NHS 119 for those without access to the internet. Essential workers, which includes anyone involved in education or childcare, have priority access to testing. Any members of staff who have helped someone with symptoms and any students who have been in close contact with them do not need to go home to self-isolate unless they develop symptoms themselves (in which case, they should arrange a test) or if the symptomatic person subsequently tests positive (see below) or they have been requested to do so by NHS Track and Trace. Everyone must wash their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and running water or use hand sanitiser after any contact with someone who is unwell. The area around the person with symptoms must be cleaned with normal household bleach after they have left to reduce the risk of passing the infection on to other people. BEFORE YOU START YOUR UNIFORM Robert Smyth Academy is very proud of the standards it maintains with uniform. The full uniform requirements are listed below. BOYS' UNIFORM WORN CORRECTLY Blazer Black with academy badge on pocket, single breasted, two-button blazer. Shirt White short or long-sleeved buttoned shirt, which should be tucked in at all times. Tie Official clip-on RSA tie, reaching the waist. Ties should not be tucked into shirts and must be worn showing seven stripes. Trousers Two choices of tailored mid grey only. Full elastic back, generous fit trousers or men's trousers mid grey only. Socks Plain black or dark grey. Shoes Shoes should be plain black only with a maximum heel height of 5cm and a maximum sole thickness of 2cm (the heel height is measured from the ground to the welt up the back of the heel). Boots, boot-style shoes, canvas shoes and trainers are not permitted. GIRLS' UNIFORM WORN CORRECTLY Blazer Black with academy badge on pocket, single breasted, two-button blazer. Shirt White short or long-sleeved buttoned shirt, which should be tucked in at all times. Tie Official clip-on RSA tie, reaching the waist. Ties should not be tucked into shirts and must be worn showing seven stripes. Trousers Two choices of tailored mid grey only. Girls’ mid grey one clip trouser or stretch straight trousers. Skirt Grey pleated skirt, regulation length, on or just above the knee, obtainable only from school stockist. No other style of skirt is allowed. (To allow for some growth, skirts are acceptable as long as they come no shorter than 5cm above the knee). Socks and Tights Plain black or dark grey socks or black tights.
Shoes Shoes should be plain black only with a maximum heel height of 5cm and a maximum sole thickness of 2cm (the heel height is measured from the ground to the welt up the back of the heel). Boots, boot-style shoes, stiletto heels, sling-back shoes, canvas shoes, suede shoes, trainers and skater style shoes are not permitted. PE KIT Compulsory (KS3) • Black/green with RSA logo polo shirt • Black shorts/skort/leggings • Black/ green reversible Rugby shirt (boys) • Quarter zip sweatshirt (girls) • Black/bottle green with RSA letters – sports socks • White/black trainer socks Compulsory (KS4) • Black/ green with RSA logo polo shirt • Black shorts/skort/leggings/black tracksuit bottoms • Black/bottle green with RSA letters – sports socks • White/black trainer socks Optional Extras • Quarter zip sweatshirt Sports Footwear • Trainers • Studded boots & shin pads (to be worn for a range of activities on the playing fields) Please note Students are reminded that they should bring their PE kit to all PE lessons (even if injured). If students are unable to take part in a practical way then they will be expected to play a full part in the lesson in a non-practical role (for example as a coach, umpire or match reporter) to ensure that they still get the most out of the lesson. All students are expected to bring a gum shield/mouth guard for rugby/hockey and shin pads for football/hockey. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR OUTDOOR COATS, HATS, SCARVES OF GLOVES INSIDE THE BUILDING. Exceptions You will wear your PE kit to school with your blazer if you have a PE lesson on that day. After your PE lesson you will be able to change ‘out of’ your PE kit for the remaining lessons of the day and will then be in full school uniform. You may be given permission by Senior Leaders to wear coats indoors on cold days as rooms and buildings must be well ventilated to promote good respiratory hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission. Teachers will determine where this is appropriate within their classroom and you will be notified.
JEWELLERY You may wear one pair of plain gold or silver discreet stud earrings (one in each earlobe). In Years 10 and 11 only, you may also wear one plain gold or silver ring and chain. Nothing else is permitted e.g. No nose studs or other body studs and bracelets are to be worn. MAKE-UP In Years 7, 8 and 9 no make-up or nail varnish is allowed. In Years 10 and 11 a small amount of discreet make-up is allowed but lipstick, coloured lip salve and nail varnish are not. You must not bring make-up into school. HAIRSTYLES Extreme hairstyles cut and colour are not allowed on any occasion. Examples of extreme hair styles would include close shaved (a grade 1 cut all over), decoratively shaved, short on the side and long on top. Two tone colouring, extensive highlighting and decorative braiding are not allowed. TURBANS Black or dark green. HIJABS Black and pinned under the chin to stay on the head comfortably. Hijabs worn around the neck only are not permitted. ACADEMY BAG A bag fit for the purpose of carrying school equipment, books and folders. MOBILE PHONES, SMART DEVICES AND HEADPHONES These are not permitted on site. If they are seen by a member of staff, you will be asked to present your planner so that a name may be taken. This name must be reported to the Duty Officer immediately and you will be asked to await arrival. A member of the senior team or duty officer will confiscate the device or headphones using disposable gloves to reduce the risk of transmission. Parents will be contacted to collect the device. WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED? You will need to bring the following items with you every day in your bag. 2 black pens, 1 purple pen, a highlighter, a pencil, a glue stick, a pencil sharpener, a rubber, a scientific calculator and a ruler. We also recommend that you bring the following hygiene products with you for personal use: • A small bottle of hand sanitiser • A packet of tissues • Hand wipes.
You will receive on your induction day a mini whiteboard and pen; this is for use in your lessons and should be brought each day. If you lose or damage these items or the pen runs out, you will need to replace them. You can either source your own or purchase them through Student services via ParentPay. IS THERE A PLACE TO STORE MY BAG? You will need to keep all your possessions on your person whilst you are at the academy, this is to ensure against loss, damage and to minimise any transmission. We have reduced the number of lessons each day and so this will consequently reduce the amount of resources you will have to bring each day. WHAT DO I DO IF I THINK I AM GOING TO BE ABSENT? If you feel ill when you wake up on a school morning you will need to speak with your parents/carers and if at all possible, try and come into the academy. You can bring medication in and leave it at Student Services. If your parents/carers think you should remain at home then they will need to contact the academy on 01858440700 or studentattendance@robertsmyth.tgacademy.org.uk to provide a reason for your absence. Your parents/carers will need to contact each day you are absent from school. Your tutor or college leader may contact your parents/carers if your absence falls below 95% WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS? It is important that you do not come into school. If you develop symptoms you should stay at home and ask your parents to phone the school to let us know. Your parents should follow ‘stay at home: guidance for households with possible or confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection’, which sets out that you should self-isolate for at least 10 days and should arrange to have a test to see if you have coronavirus (COVID-19). If your test result is negative you are able to return to school. If a member of your household tests positive for coronavirus or you are advised by NHS Track and Trace to self-isolate you should not come to school. Your parents should phone the school to let us know and you should self-isolate for 14 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms.
HOW DO I CARRY ON LEARNING IF I HAVE TO STAY AT HOME? If you cannot attend school, as you are self-isolating, Student Services will arrange for work to be sent home. Remote learning resources will be made available on the school website for you to access. These will include: • An introduction to what you will be learning in the half term • Knowledge Organisers for each subject • Access to the Virtual Learning Environment If you do not have access to a computer or tablet to complete work you should ask your parents to contact the school or let us know yourself. WHAT WILL MY DAY LOOK LIKE? Time Activity Notes 8.00 a.m. Breakfast club This is based in Sixteen07 and is open to all 30 minutes students. (Arrangements TBC in the second week of term as registration will be required). 8.30 a.m. Arrival Senior staff will be at the front of the academy greeting students. Form tutors will be in tutor bases ready to meet you. 8.45 a.m. PSHE This will be delivered in your tutor base. 25 minutes COMMON TRANSITION ONE 9.10 a.m. Period 1 Within this period, each year group will have a 2 hours scheduled 20-minute break. Make a note of your time in your planner. COMMON TRANSITION TWO 11.30 a.m. Period 2 Within this period, you will have a scheduled 30 2 hours min lunch. Make a note of your time in your planner. COMMON TRANSITION THREE 2.00 p.m. Period 3 This is a single, one-hour lesson at the end of the 1 hour day. 3.00 p.m. Dismissal You will be dismissed via the nearest exit point. 3.00 p.m. Extra-curricular There will be a variety of extra-curricular clubs and catch up and catch up opportunities for all separate year groups. Detentions will also take place during this slot, beginning on Tuesday 1st September.
GETTING TO THE ACADEMY IF YOU ARRIVE BY BUS Public transport It remains the government guidance that students must avoid the use of public transport if it is possible. When students do use public transport then face coverings must be worn and you should keep a safe distance from passengers. School buses Leicestershire Bus (RS1) • You must wear a face covering to be allowed onto the bus. • You must use a hand sanitiser when you get onto the bus. • You must wait at the bus stop and stand back to allow the driver to disembark first at the stop, do not get on quickly and maintain social distancing. • The first students in the queue will get sit at the back of the bus. When arriving at the academy students will get off from the front first to avoid walking past others the same routine is followed on the return journey. IF YOU CYCLE • If you are cycling to the academy you are invited to use our bike compound until Monday 7th September, after this date the bike compound will be available only for students who have registered for a cycle pass. • Your parents/carers can register for a cycle pass by contacting: Parentsupport@robertsmyth.tgacademy.org.uk IF YOU ARRIVE BY CAR We ask parents to: • Drive carefully; do not undertake and do not exceed 10mph • Please drive as far around the ‘D’ drive as possible before stopping to let passengers alight from your car • Not get out of their car • Please understand that it is not possible to accept visitors or meetings that have not been arranged in advance and confirmed by the Principal
BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS HOW WILL I BE EXPECTED TO BEHAVE? You are entitled to an education at Robert Smyth that challenges you to achieve your potential. It is essential that every one of us is: · courteous and considerate; being polite, helpful and making sure we respect each other as individuals · friendly and cooperative; getting on with each other and working together · honest and responsible; being truthful, reliable and responsible for our actions. What this means in practice is that students are expected to: · be hardworking; make the most of opportunities for learning · be prepared; have all the necessary equipment and uniform · be responsible; leave classrooms ready for others and for the next lesson · respect the environment; take care of the buildings and surroundings · be punctual; arrive at lessons on time · move in an orderly way through corridors; avoid running, hold doors open for others and keep noise to a minimum. · be respectful; refer to your teachers as “Sir” or “Miss” Each lesson your teacher will award one student in the class a merit for something they have done that your teacher wants to recognise. They may on occasion award more than one merit and it can be for a whole range of actions such as an excellent contribution to class discussion, for a particular piece of work and effort. Tutors and other members of staff can also award merits to students around the academy when they are on duty at break and lunch, in extra-curricular activities or during ‘catch- up’ sessions. Your tutor will also award you a merit during your Monday morning standards check if you have not received any penalty points the week before. Merits and penalty points are monitored by your tutor and college leader. Merits are recognised in half termly achievement assemblies. UNIFORM You are expected to be smart and well presented for school. If you are out of uniform, sanctions will be applied. This will normally result in a penalty unless it is for the following concerns which will result in the form tutor calling home: a short skirt, having the wrong footwear and arriving with an extreme haircut. If you are wearing incorrect footwear, you should go to Student Services to get plimsolls. If no resolution can be found, you will be removed from circulation at social time or in some cases lessons. PLANNERS You will be given a planner on your induction day. It is essential for you to use your planner as an organisational tool and for duty staff to get to know you. If you damage your planner to an unacceptable level, then you will need to purchase a new one at a cost of £2.00 from Student Services; this can be bought online through ParentPay. If
you cannot produce your planner, then you will be required to serve an after-school detention. If you don’t bring your book or equipment, you will receive a penalty point. Behaviour expectations to help stop any transmission of COVID-19 • You should follow the Big FIVE hygiene practices at all times. • You must not bring any unnecessary items into school. • You should not gather in groups at the start or end of the day. • You are expected to clean your hands more than usual. You must use hand sanitising stations that are located around the site and you are expected to clean your hands before and after eating. • You should move calmly and purposefully along the corridors maintaining distance from each other where possible and following the one-way system in place • You will only eat in the designated areas for eating at break and lunch. • You will not shout. • You will need to follow the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach to sneezing and coughing. • You must avoid unnecessary physical contact with other students. • You will sit in the seat planned for you by your teachers and not move any of the furniture in the classroom. • You must not go into the designated ‘Teacher Zone’ in each room. Behaviour in lessons We expect excellent behaviour and punctuality. Every minute counts and we must not waste time. If you arrive late to a lesson, you will receive a penalty. If you fail to meet the basic expectations of the lesson by not following instructions, talking, causing a distraction or not putting learning first, the following process will be applied to support you to make an adjustment: 1. Your initials will be recorded by the teacher on the board/desk and a verbal warning will be given. We hope that this simple reminder of expectations will give you the chance to pause and reflect on your behaviour. 2. If there is a further example of you not behaving in line with expectations, then a penalty will be noted on your electronic record. This is a final warning and reminder to allow you to make an adjustment. 3. Any further incidence of behaviour below the expected standard will mean a detention. At this point the teacher will instruct you to leave the lesson and go to an assigned class within their faculty in the event that this does not involve the student sitting with a different year group. You will be expected to complete the remainder of the lesson in the assigned class until dismissed. If the faculty does not have capacity, then the Duty Officer will be contacted. If something more serious happens in a lesson, you may be instructed to wait outside their classroom in silence for the Duty Officer to arrive. Following this you will be placed in faculty detention, ensuring that all your classmates are able to learn without disruption and in safety.
Behaviour Around the Academy We expect you to behave well at all times and speak politely to other students and all staff, if this does not happen then there will be sanctions If you are in an area deemed to be “out of bounds” at break or lunchtime the following process will apply. • On the first occasion they will be reminded of expectations • On the second occasion you will be assigned a penalty on your record • You will receive an after-school detention Mobile Phones and Smart Devices (including smart/Apple watches) If you have a mobile phone or smart device, it must not be visible or heard on the site at any time. If your phone or smart device is seen or heard during the day, then the phone or smart device will be confiscated and taken to Student Services where it can be collected by your parent/carer at the end of the day at 4.30 p.m. (Sixth Form students are permitted to access their mobile phones or smart devices in designated areas for the purpose of study.) Unacceptable Behaviour We will never tolerate behavior that is likely to cause harm to others; incidents such as fighting, using your mobile phone, bring something onto site that is not allowed, bullying or deliberately failing to keep to the health and safety requirements, such as coughing, spitting or shouting at someone to suggest transmission of the virus will dealt with very seriously. WHERE DO I ENTER THE ACADEMY? There are three points of entry onto the site: A: Top Gate B: Student Services C: Side Gate (i.e. outside the Humanities block) Members of staff will be on duty to ensure that you do not gather in groups or wait for friends and make your way to your tutor base. You will enter the site at the 'first available' entrance before going to your tutor base to sanitise your hands and enter your tutor room. Form tutors will be in the tutor rooms ready to meet you from 8.30 a.m. You must not move furniture around in the classroom. Your tutor will allocate you a seat. Tutor groups will be in year groups but you will remain in a College. WHAT HYGIENE ROUTINES DO I NEED TO FOLLOW? On arrival you should clean your hands at the first available point. Public Health England does not (based on current evidence) recommend the use of face coverings in schools. If you have arrived by bus remember to take your face mask off. You should not wear face masks in school as pupils and staff are mixing in consistent groups, and because misuse may by accident increase the risk of transmission. There may also be negative effects on communication. Once opened, internal doors should not be closed. This will reduce the number of frequently touched surfaces. WHERE DO I GO ONCE INSIDE THE ACADEMY? If you register for the breakfast club (details to be confirmed) you will be allowed to make your way to Sixteen07 at 8.00a.m. and will be greeted by catering staff who will be happy to help. If you are not going to breakfast club you should arrive to school no earlier than 8.25a.m. Tutors will be in tutor bases by 8.30a.m. You will need to be in your tutor bases by 8.45a.m. for morning registration. HOW WILL I MOVE AROUND THE ACADEMY? It is very important that when you are moving from one place to another that you do the following: • You need to move calmly and purposefully along the corridors keeping distance from each other where possible • There is a one-way system in place around the academy and you must follow this between lessons and at break and lunch times • You must not shout • In the parts of the academy where there is two-way traffic you must keep to the left of the corridor or path.

HOW WILL MY TUTOR SUPPORT ME? Your form tutor is your first port of call in the morning. They operate in loco parentis (‘in place of the parent’) for all tutees. This means they are responsible for your pastoral care and support whilst you are in school. Any questions or worries you have you can share with your tutor who will signpost you to the best person to help you. Alongside overseeing your personal development, your tutor will encourage you to develop good study habits and to read for pleasure. Vertical tutor groups have been suspended this year in order to limit social mixing. All tutor groups are comprised of students from the same year group. In order to accommodate all students, an extra multi-college tutor group has been created in Years 10 and 11 (10X1 and 11X1). WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN PSHE? (8.45-9.10 A.M.) Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is the part of the curriculum where you have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes you need to manage your lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes will help you to stay healthy, safe and prepare you for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE is delivered in 25-minute daily sessions with your tutor when you first arrive in the morning. There will also be a rolling programme of lessons – one every four weeks – in which you will cover important subjects in more detail. These will be on 14th September, 13th October, 18th November, 17th December, 29th January, 1st March, 13th April, 12th May and 17th June. For Years 9, 10 and 11, these will be your Religious Studies lessons. You will have three lessons in a day. Lessons 1 and 2 are two hours long and lesson 3 is one hour long. Your teachers will have spent time planning and preparing your lessons and will expect you to listen, follow instruction and work hard. Make sure you link your school email address to your Satchel One account when you set it up. This means that you can easily request a new password if you get locked out of your account and can’t remember your password. WHAT IF I FORGET MY SATCHEL ONE LOGIN? If you get locked out of your account, you should first try to enter your username and password. If you can’t remember your password, you should click on the button that says “forgot password”. If you still cannot get into Satchel One you should contact student services who will be able to issue you with a new pin HOMEWORK – HOW MUCH HOMEWORK WILL I GET? You will be set homework regularly for all of your subjects. For most subjects, this would be at least fortnightly. • For KS3 students, homework is likely to require 30 minutes work, for KS4 students an hour will be appropriate for most activities. • At KS5, students should be spending as much time on their subjects out of school as in lessons
HOMEWORK – HOW DO I HAND IN WORK? Your teacher will tell you how they would like you to hand in work. They may ask for you to email them the work or submit it online via Satchel One. Some homework will not need to be handed in. HOW AND WHEN WILL I BE ASSESSED? All year groups will have two formal assessments throughout the year. Achievement grades from these assessments will be reported home, alongside a comment on your learning habits. For Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12, these will be in December and April. For Years 11, these will be in September and January. For Year 13, these will be in September and the end of February. Verbal checking of learning will form a routine element of all your lessons. HOW DO I BUY FOOD? We operate a cashless system and so on your induction day you will have your fingerprint taken which will allow you buy food in the canteen. Sixteen07 On offer daily will be a selection of hot foods to include our pasta and Grab ‘n’ Go specials along with an extended range of cold snacks to include freshly made sandwiches and baguettes, fresh salad and pasta pots. The Walkthrough (situated next to the Sixteen07) The Walkthrough offers a selection of Grab ‘n’ Go options along with our cold snack range. The Hunger Hatch (located behind the Sixth Form Centre) A packed lunch, meal deal service, this will include a freshly prepared sandwich, cookie and a drink to take away. At 3pm, there will be a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and subject catch-up sessions for you to opt in to. This will include sports clubs, music sessions and subject catch-up or extension sessions. As we are not able to run extra-curricular sessions at lunch time, lunch has been shortened to accommodate after school sessions between 3-4pm. Activities will be of different lengths but all will be within year groups to avoid social mixing. If you are using public transport and/or school transport you will be sent updated guidance regarding the use of face coverings and social distancing on the way to school. You will learn how to limit social contact through: • Reading a ‘Student Handbook’ before the start of term • Talking with your parent/carer about the expectations in the ‘Student Handbook’ • An induction day with your tutor where they will have time to outline expectations • Reminders about consistent key messages via assemblies and letters • Reinforcement of appropriate sanctions for non-compliance SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED EXTRA SUPPORT? Special Education Needs - FAQ I had help from Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants in my feeder school. Will my teachers know this? Yes. Your teachers will have access to ideas on how to support you in lessons. They will make small adjustments to help you to make progress even if you need to go back a
step. If you are worried or unsure you can come and see Mrs. McNair or Mrs. Barton in the Inclusion department. I am struggling in lessons generally. What should I do? If you believe your teacher is helping you in lessons and you are attending catch up sessions speak to your teacher and college leader to see what other help is available. I cannot always remember my timetable; I get confused and sometimes forget things. Where can I go for help? Please do not worry. Ask any member of staff or another student and they will help. You can also go to Student Services or the Inclusion department. I have forgotten some of my equipment today and do not want to get into trouble. What should I do? Come and see staff in the Inclusion department. Where we can, we will give you equipment for the day but we cannot be given this back and so we may not be able to do this on every occasion. I am going into the Sixth form and due to my needs would like to work away from the Sixth Form Centre in the Inclusion Department during my study periods. Can I do this? Yes. Please agree times with Mrs. McNair or Mrs. Barton as soon as you have identified your study periods on your timetable. I do not feel happy being out with others at break and lunch time. Where can I go? The Inclusion department have a limited number of smaller rooms you may be able to come to during social times. Please ask for Mrs. McNair or Mrs. Barton for more information. I used to get more help, support or/and extra time in tests. Will this still happen this year? We should be aware of this, however at each Key Stage we need to show evidence of your need. At GCSE and A level you will be tested by someone independent of the school. Your teachers will be asked to provide evidence of your work to show what it is like before and after this help, support or extra time is given. If you feel that you teacher is not aware of the above, please let them know or speak to Mrs. McNair or Mrs. Barton. Where can I go if I need help with my homework? The Inclusion department are planning to run homework club Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3.00p.m. We will let you know where this is going to be based in the coming weeks.

FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE IF THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE MEMBER OF STAFF YOU ARE WITH. Everyone should leave their possessions behind. All adults and children should remain calm and leave the building in an orderly but purposeful manner. • On arriving at the Fire Assembly Point, you should follow the directions of the Assembly Point Officer, maintaining a calm and quiet attitude. Your form tutor will be responsible for ensuring that you are organised into groups, in silence. • No one, under any circumstances should they enter the building until the ‘all clear’ signal has been given. Disabled pupils, in all cases, will need additional assistance in the event of the need to evacuate the building. Staff need to be aware of the physical difficulties children within their group have, and to ensure that additional support in the group is targeted to support these children in the event of an evacuation. The Academy operates a ‘sweep’ system in order to ensure that every area of the Academy is cleared, in the event of an evacuation. Staff who are identified as having responsibility for this will be given additional information.
