An allergy is when the immune system reacts to a
substance (antigen) in the environment that is Note: Any previous mild or moderate allergic
usually harmless, such as food, pollen, animal, reaction would not rule out a subsequent severe

This results in the production of allergy
antibodies. Antibodies are proteins in the immune
system which identify and react with foreign
substances.

What is an allergic reaction?
An allergic reaction is when
someone develops symptoms
following exposure to an
allergen, such as hives, swelling
of lips, eyes or face, vomiting or
wheezing. Allergic reactions
range from mild to severe.

What is anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is the most severe
form of an allergic reaction. It is
potentially life-threatening and
therefore must always be treated
as a medical emergency,
resulting in immediate medical
treatment. Anaphylaxis involves the
respiratory and/or cardiovascular
system (heart and blood pressure). Signs and symptoms: Think F.A.S.T.
