EXAMPLE OF CONTENT L ARGE PRINTS / DISPLAYS / ACTUAL MUSEUM OBJECTS “Early stages (-1600) (Paths and village roads) Prehistoric Finland was thinly populated. Main routes were paths and waterways, and snow in winter. By the end of the iron age (c. 1000 CE) permanent settlement and agriculture prevailed in south- western Finland, paving the way for permanent routes: of these the Ox road, between Hämeenlinna and Turku is the oldest surviving. In the middle ages especially Sweden and Denmark rivalled for military bases, traffic hubs and trade. The coastal regions of Finland were under Swedish rule by the end of the 13th century, and better communications were needed for establishing a working government. In the 13th century the first permanent castles and stone churches were built, with growing settlements nearby. The first permanent roads developed between these hubs. Because of underdeveloped routes, it was impossible or too expensive to transport heavy merchandise like wood or grain over long distances. The first law on roads in Finland was given by the Swedish king Magnus Eriksson in the 1370’s. It stated that there had to be a common road through every village and made peasants responsible both for the cost and the manual labor of construction and upkeep of roads and bridges.” IN-DEPTH CONTENTS (GAMES, XR, MOVIES, NARRATIVES, WEB CONTENTS) Anni Antila - projektipäällikkö - Mobilia - anni.antila@mobilia.fi - +358503092640
