TEST ANSWER KEY

Ebola: from Sierra Leone to Sin City
AARC Current Topics in Respiratory Care 2015 – Program 1

7 Correct Out of 10 is Passing

1. Historically, public health and community-initiated measures were able to control outbreaks of Ebola Virus
   Disease (EVD). TRUE

2. Inquiring about the febrile state and presence or absence of flu-like symptoms are the best first screening
questions for a person under investigation for EVD. FALSE - The best first screening questions are
   timely travel or occupational exposure.

3. In resource-rich medical environments, most diagnostic tests should be completed at point of care to
   minimize exposures. TRUE

4. The more infectious patients with EVD are those who are in the early stages of the disease, just after
infection occurs. FALSE - The more infectious patients with EVD are those who are very sick
with more symptoms and production of larger volumes of body fluids.

5. Supplemental oxygen therapy is a common medical intervention for patients infected with the Ebola virus.
FALSE - In Africa, supplemental oxygen is nearly impossible to obtain. Also, respiratory
dysfunction does not start to manifest until the late stages of the disease.

6. In the United States, the patient care area where healthcare providers are at the most risk of contracting
the Ebola virus is the intensive care unit. TRUE

7. It is impossible, under any condition, for the Ebola virus to become airborne. FALSE - Airborne
transmission has not been confirmed but it is plausible that the virus can become airborne
under the right conditions, including opportunities for aerosolization.

8. Using non-invasive ventilation for the patient infected with Ebola virus disease is a good option because it
avoids the intubation procedure. FALSE - The patient who fails may need emergent intubation,
which is a procedure to be avoided as it may cause the healthcare team to miss a step while
donning protective equipment. Also, though not proven, the high flows through the NIV
system have the potential to aerosolize and disseminate infectious particles.

9. The key to proper personal protective equipment when treating persons infected with the Ebola virus is
discipline and a calm, detailed, consistent process. TRUE

10. In resource-rich medical environments, it is important to minimize the number of healthcare providers who
have contact with the patient infected with the Ebola virus and to ensure no non-essential personnel enter
    that isolation environment. TRUE
