3/3/2021 Constant Contact Drive Sober on St. Patrick's Day St. Patrick’s Day — March 17, 2021 — is one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, and this, unfortunately, means more drunk drivers on the roads. If your employees plan to drink, make sure they don't drive. Review these facts and share the word about the dangers of drunk driving so you can continue merry-making for all the St. Paddy’s Days to come. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest times on our nation’s roads. During the 2015-2019 St. Patrick’s Day period (6 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18), 280 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes. In 2019, drunk driving killed more than 10,000 people in our country, and every single one of those deaths was preventable. https://app.constantcontact.com/pages/campaigns/email-details/details/activity/98aeae63-03f7-4032-b16b-891a26d7c778 1/10
3/3/2021 Constant Contact In 2019 alone, 57 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day period (6 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18). Between the hours of midnight and 5:59 a.m. over the St. Patrick’s Day period in 2019, more than three out of five (63) crash fatalities involved a drunk driver. Walking home after a night out drinking alcohol? In 2019, 31 of the pedestrians killed in traffic crashes had blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) at or above .08. Arrange for a sober ride or for a sober friend to walk you home. Remember that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. It is illegal and deadly to drink and drive. For some, even one drink may be one drink too many. Despite the fact that it’s illegal to drive when impaired by alcohol, in 2019, one person was killed every 52 minutes by a drunk driver on our nation’s roads. The Cost of Drunk Driving On average, a DUI can set you back $10,000 in attorney’s fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates, and more. The financial impact from impaired-driving crashes is devastating. Based on 2010 numbers (the most recent year for which cost data is available), impaired-driving crashes cost the United States $44 billion annually. If you’re caught drinking and driving, you can face jail time. Imagine trying to explain that to your friends and family or your place of employment. Drinking and driving can cause you to lose your driver’s license and your vehicle. This could inhibit you from getting to work, resulting in lost wages and, potentially, job loss. Celebrate with a Plan Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911. Do you have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely. https://app.constantcontact.com/pages/campaigns/email-details/details/activity/98aeae63-03f7-4032-b16b-891a26d7c778 2/10
3/3/2021 Constant Contact Always remember to plan ahead. If you plan to drink, plan for a sober driver to take you home. Is it your turn to be the designated driver? NHTSA provides a user-friendly Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Look-Up Tool, a web-based portal that allows vehicle owners to check for open safety recalls for their vehicles or automotive equipment, such as tires and car seats. Remember: Every vehicle recall is serious and affects your safety. Read below to learn more about the process of checking for your vehicle’s safety recalls: https://app.constantcontact.com/pages/campaigns/email-details/details/activity/98aeae63-03f7-4032-b16b-891a26d7c778 4/10
3/3/2021 Constant Contact Checking for safety recalls is free! Visit NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN. In seconds, you'll know if your vehicle is subject to an open safety recall. While you’re there, sign up for Recall Alerts. If your vehicle is included in a future recall, you’ll receive an email. Your VIN is located on the lower portion of your car's windshield on the driver’s side. Your VIN is also located on your car's registration card, and it may be shown on your insurance card. The free recall tool will provide details on any unrepaired recall in your vehicle — for at least the past 15 calendar years. It will also provide details on unrepaired safety recalls from major automakers, motorcycle manufacturers, and some medium/heavy truck manufacturers. If your vehicle is affected by a safety recall, contact your dealer to schedule a repair as soon as possible. Every recall is fixed FOR FREE. In fact, an urgent air bag recall is still ongoing. Find out if your vehicle is involved in this recall. NHTSA’s updated SaferCar app helps keep you informed about your vehicle. Download the app and enter your vehicle’s VIN, as well as your car seats, tires, or any other automotive equipment information, and NHTSA will send you an alert if a safety recall is issued on them. In 2020, there were 886 safety recalls affecting 55 million vehicles and other equipment in the United States. Unfortunately, about 25% of vehicle recalls are not repaired, which puts everyone on the road at risk. If you have a used vehicle, you may not be receiving your vehicle’s recall notices. This is why it is important to check for yourself and sign up for alerts to make sure you’re informed about a recall that affects your safety. If you think your vehicle may have a safety-related defect that isn’t part of a current recall, contact NHTSA online or by calling the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236. https://app.constantcontact.com/pages/campaigns/email-details/details/activity/98aeae63-03f7-4032-b16b-891a26d7c778 5/10
