                                 RESILIENT LANDSCAPES
June 3, 2014, Abbadia di Fiastra(MC), "Salone delle Feste"

In physics, resilience is the capacity to resist impulses, to react to unexpected impacts without breaking apart.
Designing resilient cities means favouring the ability of a community to modify itself in order to respond
positively to climate changes that often create drastic effects on the form and operation of the urban
landscape and the social, economic, and environmental characteristics that characterise it.
Finding tools suitable for governing the relationships between these changes and urban sustainability is a
major challenge for the next decade. To hope to succeed, however, it is necessary to understand and interpret
as well as possible the ecological cycles of the city, the safety of the urban environment, and the relationship
between urban form and quality of life in order to then select those "landscape models" that can provide
direction in defining new "urban models".
To reduce the negative effects of unexpected climate change and enhance the positive aspects, good
governance therefore starts from resilience by selecting the best policies, plans, and projects for the
regeneration of cities in crisis. The seminar "Resilient Landscapes" aims to open a discussion on these
themes with the participation of internationally renowned scholars, basing it on experiences in applied
research and the policies and plans of regions in Central Italy.
