Redbourn Care Group and Community Newsletter No. 26 March 2021 Our newsletter provides information to Redbourn residents during the pandemic. We will continue to provide you with our newsletter for the foreseeable future. Redbourn Classics Motor Show and Village Fete PROVISIONAL DATE - Saturday 4 September 2021 12 Noon - 5pm A provisional date of 4th September has been set for this year’s “Redbourn Classics” to be held on the Common. We have booked 2 bands and are now starting to make plans for a great day for the whole community. Please put the date in your diary. The Show will be organised in accordance with government Covid guidelines in place at that time. All details will be on the website www.redbournclassics.co.uk All proceeds from the Show go to Redbourn charities, in fact the Show is now the largest single funder of the Redbourn Care Group. This year’s Show is raising funds for three Redbourn charities: the Village Hall to improve facilities so that more celebrations and events can be run in the Hall, Redbourn Care Group and the Friends of St Mary’s. We need over 100 volunteers to run the Show and we would welcome more help this year. There are lots of jobs for our volunteers to choose from. Some jobs are for strong able-bodied people, but we have jobs where a table and chair are provided, a seated volunteer role! We also have roles where families with children can help. At the last Show in 2019, some families helped by collecting donations and giving out stickers to visitors. On the Friday evening and Saturday morning (Sept 3rd & 4th) we need strong volunteers who can help us to put up mesh fencing and gazebos, then whilst the Show is running, we need people to direct traffic in the car parks and to help collect donations at the entry points. At the end of the show day, volunteers are needed to take down the fencing and to litter pick. We plan to allocate these volunteers to specific roles in advance of the event, so everyone knows what they are doing. If you can help, please use this link to Sign Up: https://redbourncaregroup.co.uk/classics/ Tickets for classic vehicles to enter the Show will be available from late May. Each year we offer free pitches to Redbourn charities and community groups, so please get in touch to reserve one of these pitches for your group, please call Jenny Gilmore on 01582 794701 or email redbournclassics@gmail.com 1
Photo courtesy of Pat Schofield Reminder that the funeral procession for Cllr. Tony Swendell takes place on Monday 29th March, 2021 Redbourn residents are invited to pay their last respects to our wonderful friend and esteemed councillor. His hearse will tour streets in Redbourn on its way to West Herts Crematorium. The cortege will leave Monks Close at 10.00am and process via North Common, Lords Meadow, Snatchup, Long Cutt, to Blackhorse Lane, Dunstable Road and High Street. Mourners are invited to line the streets, maintaining social distancing and other government guidance in a final farewell. Please do avoid congregating in and around Monks Close where space is restricted to the cortege. Please, no black ties. Tony was proud to be the President of Redbourn Care Group for many years. Tony’s wish was that there should be family flowers only. Any donations in his memory should go to the Care Group. To donate, please send a cheque, payable to ‘Redbourn Care Group’, via their office at The Village Hall, High Street, Redbourn, AL3 7LW or visit their website via this special link to make a donation: https://redbourncaregroup.co.uk/ 2
Redbourn Care Group Redbourn Care Group has provided support throughout the past 12 months as we have faced lockdowns and times of great difficulty, and often sadness, brought about by the pandemic. Sadly, Covid will stay with us in some capacity. For our well-being and mental health, we need to find ways to be positive and continue with some sensible social distancing, good hygiene, including the wearing of face coverings and hand washing, and continued awareness of each other. It is interesting that there have been almost no flu cases all winter. The Care Group reviews and assesses the needs of our community and makes decisions about the support that is needed. With our energetic and willing volunteers, the Care Group has been creative in what we have been able to offer during the pandemic and will continue to do so moving forwards. We are fully COVID-19 compliant and therefore anything we offer follows government guidelines to ensure your protection and the protection of our community. Practical support We are continuing to offer help with shopping and can arrange journeys to medical appointments including Covid vaccinations. We have a team of volunteers helping with prescription deliveries. Do not hesitate to call us if you need some support. We will be happy to hear from you. ‘Your team has, very kindly, been picking up and delivering my prescription over the past few months. I have today been advised that from 1 April I no longer need to shield so I'll be able to do this for myself going forward. It has been such a great benefit knowing that I did not have to worry about getting my medication and would like to pass on a big thank you to all involved. I have made a donation via your website as a token of my appreciation. Wishing you all the best for a healthy and happy future.’ Friendly talks, friendly walks and tea and chat in the Zoom Room Our friendly talks can offer you someone to chat to – it can be about anything or just a good chat with another person, especially if you are feeling bored or isolated at home. Our friendly walks offer you chance to walk and talk for those of you who would like to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and company. From 8th March you will be able to sit down on a bench and enjoy an outdoor coffee! Good news and positive stories to make you smile ‘Fantastic newsletter. I don’t live in Redbourn but I sure would like to!!’ ‘Spring forward, fall back’. In spring, the clocks go forward one hour and British Summer Time begins. In autumn, the clocks go back as British Summer Time comes to an end and the UK reverts back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). But the great news is that officially the winter is over!! Coronavirus updates People vaccinated up to and including 24 March 2021 First dose: 28,991,188 Second dose: 2,775,481 https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk The public has risen to the challenge of suppressing Covid-19: by obeying the law; staying at home; getting tested when needed; isolating when required, and following the ‘hands, face, space’ and ‘letting fresh air in’ guidance. In implementing this plan, the government will be guided by data, not dates, so that we do not risk a surge in infections that would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS. For that reason, all the dates in the roadmap are indicative and subject to change. There will be a minimum of five weeks between each step: four weeks for the scientific data to reflect the changes in restrictions and to be analysed; followed by one week’s advance notice of the restrictions that will be eased. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-response-spring-2021/covid-19-response- spring-2021-summary STEP ONE Gatherings Larger gatherings including in private gardens – up to 6 people from (Part Two) different households – or two full households. 29th March Stay at home order will be lifted – encouraged to stay local – work from home still in place. Possible reduced vaccine availability during April (Information provided by NHS Herts Valleys CCG - update 19/3/21) There is expected to be a reduction in the weekly supply of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine from the week beginning 29 March for an expected four-week period that will impact first doses during April for those without an existing booking but not those receiving second doses. Between now and 29 March, GP-led, pharmacy-led and large vaccination sites are continuing to vaccinate those in the top priority groups. Everyone aged 50 and over, eligible carers and those in vulnerable groups should have had an invite but if you have not had an invite or your first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine please contact your local surgery asap by email The Lodge Surgery - https://www.lodgesurgery.co.uk/navigator/contact-the-practice/ or the Elms Medical Practice - elmsmedical@nhs.net). You can also book a vaccination either online, through the NHS National Booking System or call 119. You are advised by them to take up this offer as soon as possible and start to get the protection you need against COVID-19 before 29 March. Anyone who doesn’t take up this offer now may not be able to attend their first dose appointment until May. Second dose appointments that are due will go ahead – for both the Pfizer or the AstraZeneca vaccine - as will any first dose vaccinations that have already been booked to take place between 29 March and the end of April. • If you booked your first appointment at a pharmacy or large vaccination centre through the national booking system website or by calling 119, you should already have a second dose appointment, which you should attend as planned. • If you had your first vaccination at a GP-led vaccination centre, you will be contacted by your GP practice and given a date for your second appointment. Please do not contact your GP – they will be in touch. Please note that between 29 March and the end of April, new first dose vaccination appointments (without an existing booking) will only be made in exceptional circumstances. Helping your surgery This has been an impossibly busy year for our surgeries, and they are currently receiving unprecedented numbers of calls. On the Redbourn Community Newsbite call this Wednesday the Practice Manager from the Elms Surgery in Harpenden (which supports about 20% of the Redbourn community) shared that they are receiving 4000 calls a day. We understand that it can feel frustrating when you are poorly, or you are calling on behalf of someone else who is unwell, and you are unable to speak to someone quickly. You can help your surgery by emailing them (see above) and by getting online. You could perhaps ask family or a carer to help with this. Please register for Patient Access https://www.patientaccess.com/ or for the NHS app https://www.nhsapp.service.nhs.uk/login Both allow patients to: - • book and cancel appointments • order repeat prescriptions • get health information and advice • view your medical record securely • message the surgery • and the NHS app, in addition, allows you to manage referral appointments. 5
Patient access requires the surgery to see 2 forms of ID to check who you are. The NHS app asks you to submit a photo of your driving licence or your passport. It is very easy to register. The Lodge are also trying to enable you to see the same GP if there is a need for a follow up appointment or consultation. If you need to be followed up, ask the reception team who you saw before. If you cannot remember, the receptionist will check even if it means waiting a little longer for that appointment. REDBOURN PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP Do you have, care for, or know anyone who has, Parkinson’s? If so did you know that there is a support group in the village? We are a friendly group and get together occasionally to chat and try things out - we’ve previously had a yoga session and towards the other end of the spectrum tried African drumming ... but mostly we just chat. Pre Covid we met at the Parish Centre, and during the pandemic we’ve kept in touch using Zoom. If you would like to know more, and chat to people who understand what it’s like to have the condition, please contact Symon Vegro on 07912 398000 or symonvegro@me.com Food Banks Throughout lockdown Foodbanks have remained open as an essential service. They have had to react to an increase in demand at the same time as losing a significant number of volunteers who needed to shield. The teams have done an amazing job and the communities have been magnificent in their donations keeping us going. This has been a very tough time for everyone for different reasons. Some have found themselves out of work and needed for the first-time emergency food. Others have found the isolation extremely challenging. There have been many challenges and difficulties in our communities. 6
The food bank is there to help you in times of crisis. We are mindful that there are some in the community who find it hard to come forward for help. If you have issues that mean you will need help beyond this lockdown a good first step is to contact St Albans Citizens Advice. Please call 01727 811 118 to speak to St Albans Citizens Advice who will be able to issue you with a food bank voucher if necessary. They have the expertise to help. Please ring and if you do not get an answer leave a message. Things to do Redbourn Common, for many of us during lockdown, has provided a great space for our daily exercise. As we go into the spring and can soon go out and about a bit more after 12th April, you might fancy trying some new walks. The Chiltern Society has a wealth of free leaflets that you can be download for walks. https://chilternsociety.org.uk/free-walks-leaflets/ There is also a section about walking for families and activity sheets about nature. https://chilternsociety.org.uk/12-days-of-a-chiltern- christmas-family-friendly-walks-leaflets/ Easter Fun! Hertfordshire Constabulary is launching its annual spring crime prevention campaign, Operation Gnome, to provide advice to help residents make their homes, gardens and outbuildings more secure this spring. As lockdown restrictions ease, many people will be returning to work or spending more time outdoors, which will give criminals opportunities to target homes. At this time of year when the weather is starting to improve, people tend to spend more time in their gardens using gardening and leisure equipment. Burglars are also on the look-out for valuable equipment and tools left out or stored in sheds and outbuildings that often have little or no security. “During the lockdowns burglaries have remained very low as homes have been mostly occupied. However, as more people venture out the risk increases and we often see an increase in thefts from gardens, sheds and garages, during the spring. We are recommending that everyone takes some basic security measures to make sure their gardens and outbuildings are secure. Leaving tools and gardening equipment lying around in your garden can attract thieves, as they are valuable. Make sure any tools that could assist a burglar, like ladders, trowels, hammers etc, are locked away and make sure outbuildings are as secure as possible, with strong locks or even an alarmed padlock. Dusk till dawn security lights and planting defensive plants like roses along your borders and keeping fences in good condition will make your home even safer." Visit our crime prevention pages at: www.herts.police.uk/crimeprevention for advice on keeping your home, garden and outbuildings secure. Hertfordshire Trading Standards has seen a recent rise in complaints from homeowners with solar panels. Complaints show that they are being targeted by companies cold calling, offering services that are not required and charging extortionate prices. Advice from Trading Standards is to NOT respond to cold callers at the door or unexpected phone calls, even when they say that they are linked to the original installer. Instead, shop around, getting at least three quotes from reputable companies. Use personal recommendations or the Hertfordshire Trading Standards trusted trader scheme where we work with Which? Trusted Traders https://trustedtraders.which.co.uk/ or call 01707 292429 for details of local traders. If you need further advice and support, please contact Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133, who will refer to Hertfordshire Trading Standards as required. Redbourn Road Survey (from our local MP Bim Afolami) Redbourn Road (A5183) has been the site of several serious road traffic accidents in recent years, and many more undocumented near misses. After many conversations with local residents who are passionate about urgently improving road safety along this road, I am pleased that a feasibility study has been scheduled for further safety interventions. This survey will be a part of that crucial evidence base and I would encourage to share your experiences on Redbourn Road. The evidence collected will feed straight into the formal study of what and where various options would be most appropriate. We’d encourage as many of you as possible to complete this survey now as we all want the area we live in to be as safe as possible. 10
Behind the scenes at the Care Group VOLUNTEERING REALLY DOES ADD UP FOR CLAIRE Although she is far too modest to do the calculations herself, Claire Johnson must have delivered more than 500 prescriptions to households in Redbourn during the past year. Every Wednesday since this Redbourn Care Group service started, Claire has pounded the streets of the village delivering up to 15 prescriptions a day to people who cannot get to the pharmacy themselves. Unable to take part in her regular sports of tennis and golf, Claire has incorporated her deliveries into her exercise regime: “I must easily manage the 10,000 steps a day recommendation,” she jokes. Having lived in Redbourn for 26 years Claire says she thought she knew the village well, but she found that wasn’t really the case: “I enjoy the challenge of planning out my route each week to make it into a circular walk which can take up to 2 hours and as a result I’ve got to know the village really well and kept myself fit at the same time!” she says. Claire has been a volunteer for the Care Group for around 8 years and has driven scores of local people to their doctor and hospital appointments over that time: “I’ve met some really lovely people and the volunteer driving role is very flexible, so I am able to fit it around other commitments,” she comments. As well as her work with the Care Group, Claire was also a volunteer at the Redbourn Library before it closed as a result of the pandemic. She is currently a volunteer Covid vaccination steward and has helped out in both St Albans and Welwyn. Before she retired, Claire was an accountant working at companies including Hewlett Packard, Mothercare and with a smaller local IT firm. She and husband Michael moved to North Common, Redbourn while they were both working and have two sons. A keen golfer, Claire was actively involved in Harpenden Golf Club as former Captain of the ladies’ section and held various roles on committees there. She is also a member of the Redbourn Tennis club and has already booked her first game ready for when the rules are relaxed! Meanwhile she enjoys long walks with her husband and dog: “Redbourn is such a great place to walk from, we are very lucky to have lovely countryside around us and it has been a great place for the children to grow up in. I’m very happy to be able to give something back to the village as a volunteer,” she says. 11

Redbourn’s unmissable new serial the ‘Snatchups’ is now in its ninth week with a new episode being broadcast every Wednesday morning as part of Active in Redbourn’s Community Newsbites programme. which astonishingly has not suffered a drop in listeners as a result. The serial, which follows the day-to-day lives of the Snatchup family, is set in the fictional Hertfordshire village of St. Mary's, which seems to bear a remarkable similarity to Redbourn, and is purely coincidental. When we left it this week: Grandad, determined to fulfil his bucket list before it is too late, has persuaded Phil Tibbs the vicar to join him in a tandem bungee jump from a crane 150 feet above St. Mary’s common to raise money for Pumps for Mpwapwa. Tim has become a vegetarian but his diet of bean burgers and lentils has not endeared him to the rest of the family, who are now having to wear face masks indoors as well. And that is before they are subjected to the life changing effects of organic alfalfa sprouts! Jane has submitted a touching picture of Grandad contemplating on a park bench as her entry in the Parish Council’s photography competition, but opinion is divided as to whether this will win a prize or a visit from social services. And finally, much to Brenda’s disgust, Stan and Uncle Rodney have been forced by the notorious Bellamy Brothers to deliver dubious packages to a man in a black hoodie, but what is the secret that Grandad has found out and what happened between Brenda and Uncle Rodney on the infamous camping trip? If you have missed any of the action, all previous episodes are available to listen to on the Redbourn Players Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/redbournplayers/ Revd Will You may be interested in purchasing one of Will’s short books ‘Thoughts and Reflections from Lockdown’. This short book that Will has published, brings together his weekly ‘Thoughts for the Week’ broadcast as part of the Redbourn Community Call that has been going out through much of 2020. Copies are £10 and are on sale now in church, with all the proceeds for the CFC, as we raise money for our ‘Pumps for Mpwapwa’ Appeal. 13
