WHY LOMBOK As result of multiple earthquakes in Lombok the Indonesian government reported “259 recorded fatalities, 1,033 injuries, 270,168 internally displaced people, 64,534 damaged houses and 429 damaged public facilities.” -World Health Organization 09.08.2018 From January 3rd to March 27th, 2019 we will collaborate with the residents of Lombok to rebuild communities by providing CircusAid programs that involve various forms of occupational engagements. We are conducting needs assessments to ensure our presence will contribute to culturally relevant, safe and sustainable community dwellings in which we can host CircusAid workshops as well as provide a shared space for gatherings, storage and shelter. The intention is to provide sustainable infrastructures by collaborating with local community members, and to give psychosocial support through social circus programs. The Agung Siaga Community, active in coordinating the humanitarian help, has invited CircusAid to take part in providing community support in Lombok. See Invitation Letter. “Major needs identified include emergency shelter, first aid and health care including psychosocial support, water, sanitation and food assistance.” -International Federation of Red Cross 20.09.2018
PROJECT PHASE 1: Design. Materials. Research A needs analysis conducted with local sources confirmed that bamboo dome dwellings withstood all recent earthquakes within Lombok despite most other kinds of housing being flattened for multiple tens of kilometers around. Many local residents of Lombok prefer to rebuild dwellings with this earthquake resistant eco friendly method. Mentigy Bay, Lombok 2018 PHASE 2: Building with Local Residents We will build a shared community space for CircusAid programs with local Lombok residents that will provide them knowledge, skills, resources and paid labor to rebuild their homes. The build phase will support Lombok residents and their economy by sourcing local materials, employing local labor and fabricating bamboo domes to meet community priorities of support Larna, Corfu 2017 in building safe infra-structure and the provision of psychosocial services. Traditional ways of building will be incorporated with ecological and earthquake resistant dome building methods. Larna, Corfu 2017
