Me and my Exhibition Welcome to my very first Oxfordshire Artweeks exhibition! I’m delighted to be taking part after only a year of lino printing. Having taken up printing during the first lockdown, I now fit it in around my full- time lecturing job at Oxford Brookes University. My exhibition consists of prints I’ve made for friends and family, designs which take me back to special times, as well as those that represent an appreciation of small pleasures. Let me tell you the stories behind my prints…
‘’’Apero’clock’’ I first discovered Aperol Spritz when living and working in Sardinia. Every Friday, I would go to a bar for ‘Apericena’: 10 Euros for a drink and all-you-can-eat buffet. Whenever I drink an Aperol Spritz, it brings back warm memories of my time there. 2 block lino print Approx. 25cm x 30cm £25
‘Sarang Hae’ (Love) My first English teaching job was in South Korea. I had the most wonderful time living and teaching in Daegu, and met some fantastic friends. When I returned the last time in 2018, I discovered a new gesture being used in photos. Have you seen it? The thumb and finger placed together make a heart shape. I made it one of my Valentine’s Day card designs and it has proved to be one of the most popular of all my cards. It also makes a beautiful print. A4 Lino print (right), £16 Card - £3
‘Oxford’ This is a commission for a friend who asked me to design her wedding invites for her. She and her fiancé are avid cyclists so a bike in the design was a must. The print is based on her own sketches. Lino print on watercolour. A5 Not currently for sale
‘Bottoms Up!’ One of my favourite local walks is from Marston to the University Parks. Each time I go on this walk, I cannot resist watching the ducks. On one occasion, I played with the phrase ‘bottoms up’ and wondered whether the ducks might actually be at a secret cocktail party. ‘That’d make a good print’ I thought… And it has! Lino print (right), A4, £14 Card £3 Click through to see other variations on my cheeky duck theme.
Cards I have always loved making handmade cards instead of buying them. I love thinking of new ideas for designs that will make the recipient smile. I’m always open to new suggestions too. Each card is printed by hand and left blank inside. Each £3
‘Time to Wine Down’ During lockdown, I embarked on a project to find small daily pleasures. On my list was making coffee, doing yoga and dancing in my living room. However, my favourite is probably the first glug of the wine bottle as it is poured into a glass! Lino print, A4, £14
‘Mariel of Redwall’ This is a commission from an American friend whose daughter is an avid reader of the books by Brian Jacques. This was a challenging print as I had never heard of the books and there were not many images of the character for me to base my design on. Lino print on a watercolour background A4 Not currently for sale
‘New Beginnings’ This print was made for a friend who loves ferns. When I looked them up, I found out that they symbolise new beginnings, which is extremely fitting for her in her new home. Lino print A4 £14
‘Moka’ Another Sardinian influence, my first Moka pot was a bright pink one, which I loved starting the day with. Seeing this print in my kitchen each day reminds me of that time. Four layer lino print in pink, orange, blue or purple. 20cm x 25cm £18
‘Red Kite over Oxford’ I moved to Oxford just over 2 years ago and I remember how excited I was when I first saw a red kite gliding over the golf course opposite my flat. It was so graceful and exotic and I felt like I was abroad again. In fact, on the verge of extinction here, they were reintroduced from Spain and seem to have flourished. I am still fascinated by them and am often distracted from my online classes by one flying past my window. My design plays with the name and situates this beautiful bird firmly in Oxford. Lino print on watercolour and colle background. 21cm x 25cm, £18
