SUNSCREENS EXPLAINED We all have been told how important it is to use sunscreens. It has been preached to us again and again but why do many of us not bother to apply it (or only use it at the beach or pool)? It’s overwhelming with so many SPF products on the market. How do we know which ones are best to use and why? What is UV radiation and why does it matter to us? Sunscreens must be ap- plied daily; get in the habit of applying it after you brush your teeth in the morning. Little doses of UV rays here and there add up to damage down the road. Wear sun protection in the winter (especially here in South Texas) and on rainy days (UV rays still penetrate through clouds). Be extra diligent to apply behind your neck, top of ears, chest, back of hands, etc. Recommendations below are for the face and chest area. An abundance of body sunscreens is less expensive, but it is a good idea to apply to ex- posed skin daily as well. Moisturizers/sunscreens with antioxidant protection give another layer of sun protection. Antioxidants protect skin from colla- gen breakdown and environmental attacks. Examples include Vitamins A, C, E - Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which are the most common and effective. Ingredients derived from fruits and other botanicals are good. A blend of antioxidants is best. It is a fal- lacy that you need an SPF of 100. SPF of 50 blocks 97% of UV rays while a SPF of 30 blocks 93%. Even being in the shade does not block 100% of rays. Look for a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and don’t count on your foundation to be your sunscreen; use it under your foundation. What is UV radiation? Ultraviolet radiation penetrates through the ozone layer contributing to DNA damage. UVA (Alpha) are the aging rays. They penetrate deeper into the dermis which contributes to a majority of photo damage (age spots, hyperpig- mentation, skin abnormalities). UVA rays remain at a constant strength throughout the day, year-round. These rays penetrate through clouds and windows, and their damaging effects target everyone, regardless of skin type, tone or condition. UVB (Beta) are the burning rays that make the skin red and hot. UVC (Carcinogenic) are absorbed in the ozone and do not affect the skin. UVA/UVB will both contribute to aging and skin cancer. It is important to find sunscreen that is broad spectrum which protects from both damaging UV rays. For sunscreens to be most effective, check expiration dates and keep lotion out of direct heat (which can break down ingredients making it less effective). Don’t keep your sunscreen in the car or on the patio table. There are two types of sunscreens: Chemical and Physical. Chemical ingredients absorb UV rays. It should be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure. Chemical blocks can be broken down by sunlight and must be reapplied often. Chemical sun- screens can be irritating since they absorb into the skin. If you have any skin conditions or sensitivities, a physical block is recom- mended. Physical sunscreens are mineral based and reflect UV rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the main ingredients. Most brands have been micronized so they do not turn the skin white like in the old days. Physical blocks are more photo- stable, meaning less likely to breakdown in the sun. It also reflects heat since the product sits on the skin. As of January 2021, Hawaii has banned chemical sunscreens as the ingredients bleach and harm coral reef. Physical sunscreens are the only type allowed. Facial Sunscreen recommendations (chemical and physical): Supergoop Unseen SPF 40 and ZincScreen Mineral Lotion, Coola, La Roche-Posay Anthelios with Mexoryl SX Ultra-light Mineral SPF 50, Elta MD UV Pure SPF 47, First Aid Beauty Liquid Mineral, Neu- trogena has many - look for Helioplex on the label, CereVe Mineral Face SPF, Cetaphil AM SPF 30, Cetaphil Clear Skin SPF 60, Aveeno Positively Radiant SPF 30, Aveeno Mineral Sensitive SPF. There are many to choose from, read the labels and find one that suits you. These can be found at Walmart, Target or Ulta. For the body, Coppertone, Neutrogena, La Roche-Posay, Super- goop are wonderful product lines. If you have a history of skin cancer, please refer to your dermatologist. They may have more recommendations and will keep a closer eye on your condition. There is clothing available that has an SPF in them. Not only swim wear but casual everyday apparel. Always a good idea to wear a hat (we forget about the scalp) and UV blocking sunglasses. It only takes an extra minute or two to use sunscreens. Make it a daily habit to help save your skin. MAY FUN! WHOA! MAY BIRTHDAYS HAVE ARRIVED May birthdays have arrived and guess what characteristics are displayed in these appreciable people? Generally, they are both physically and mentally healthy and have positive attitudes. If they are born between May 1st and 20th, they come under the zodiac sign of Taurus and tend to be smart, ambitious and trustworthy. If they are born between May 21st and May 31st, they come under the sign of Gemini and reveal a passionate and dynamic nature. People born in May are also very hard working and strive to achieve their goals and dreams. As a result, they also show a determination to do things properly and whole heartedly. They are full of energy and are prone to become restless. May folks are very sensitive to other individuals’ feelings. Because of their sensitive nature, they are also easily angered and short tempered. Yikes! Let’s not upset our May birthday members! Let’s go ahead and have a drive through birthday celebration on Friday, May 28th at 12 noon: great food, birthday cake and entertainment. Please call Pat by 9 a.m. and let her know if you will be able to join us. Also, do not forget you are always welcomed to park in the lot and listen to the entertainment before heading back home. Hope you will join us! MOTHER’S DAY PARTY Moms are very special and most of us could not have survived without them. It is only proper that we celebrate them in a special way. Please join us on Thursday, May 6th at 12:00 noon for our drive through lunch, dessert and entertainment to honor all Moms. Champion High School students will be providing a fashion show with their wonderful custom creations for your enjoyment. Please be sure and call Pat by 9:00 a.m. and let us know if you can join us! MOTHER’S DAY JOKE Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother gently rubbed cold cream on her face. "Why are you rubbing cold cream on your face, Mommy?" he asked. "To make myself beautiful," said his mother. A few minutes later, she began removing the cream with a tissue. SPECIAL APRIL BIRTHDAY If you celebrate your birthday in May, we will be providing you with a lovely floral bouquet from the Flower Shop. The Flower Shop has donated beautiful arrangements each month for many years to help celebrate our members’ birthdays! Rainbow Sen- ior Center would like to recognize and thank them for their support and help. Mary Etta Kingston was the lucky recipient of a beautiful arrangement and celebrated her 100th birthday on April 28th. She lived in Corpus Christi for most of her life but moved to Boerne a couple of years ago to be closer to her immediate family. She has always loved to garden and has many beautiful plants on her porch. She considers her- self to have lived a blessed life. Congratulations for cele- brating 100 wonderful years, Mary Etta!
