20 21 ON THIS DAY IN SCOTTISH FOOTBALL IT HAPPENED TODAY IN SCOTTISH FOOTBALL 1956 Scotland’s first B International was a 0-0 draw with France in Toulouse in November 1952, and the first match against England was a 2-2 draw at Easter Road the following March. In 1954 the match at Sunderland was drawn and the weather put paid to the 1955 fixture at Ibrox. On 29th February 1956, there was another draw, 2-2 at Dens Park. The last of this short series of B Internationals against England was the only one not to be drawn, the Saxons winning 4-1 at St Andrews, Birmingham in February 1957. B Internationals fell out of favour until yet another draw, 1-1 with France at Pittodrie in 1987, then there were two played in 1990, against Yugoslavia and East Germany. Successive Scotland managers brought them back into use between 1994 and 2009, when 20 B Internationals were played. The 1956 fixture was watched by 11,500 at Dens Park, who saw goals from Jimmy Mulkerrin and Willie McCulloch for the home side, and Tommy Taylor of Manchester United and Bristol City’s John Atyeo for the visitors. The Scots team wasL Brown (Dundee), Kerr (Partick Thistle), Rae (Falkirk), Neilson (St Mirren), Malloy (Cardiff City), Glen (Aberdeen), Cullen (Luton Town), Yorston (Aberdeen), Mulkerrin and Turnbull (both Hibs) and McCulloch (Airdrie). 2012 Scotland Under 21s drew 0-0 with Netherlands in a European Championship qualifier watched by 6,607 at New St Mirren Park. The Scots team was Mark Ridgers (Hearts), Ross Perry (Rangers) captain Paul Hanlon (Hibs), Danny Wilson (Liverpool), David Wotherspoon (Hibs), Ryan Jack (Aberdeen), Gary Mackay- Stevem (Dundee United), Liam Kelly (Kilmarnock), Tom Cairney (Hull City, Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield Town) and Jonny Russell (Dundee United).
