Mandela and De Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in bringing apartheid to an end.

Cosmonauts Autographs

These covers were produced from 1964 by Russia’s
                                                                     SOYUZ 15
oldest Russian foreign trade agency Mezhdunarodnaya
Kniga. If you’re looking for Cosmonaut autographs then
these are the ones to go for not just for the smart design
but because the agency produced a fixed quantity of
which all were signed, so they retain good provenance.
They are distinctive by their smaller and differently
shaped envelopes then regular Russian FDCs & all
except the very earliest include a first day icon based
on the design of the Sputnik 3 satellite either as a hand-
stamped cachet or printed as part of the design.

R Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison (1847 - 1931) has been described as America's greatest inventor who was responsible for an
abundance of creations including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb.
Edison held over 1,000 US patents as well as many here in the UK, and his work made a huge contribution to mass
communication, industrial research, and electric generation and distribution systems.

This stunning letter signed by Edison is on beautifully headed paper from the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison dated
1st July 1911 and reads 'I am sending my representative Mr James Ricalton to your part of the world to secure

The Atomic Bombings
The dropping of nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th August 1945 respectively is still
fiercely debated today. We have a very limited stock of covers signed by the two crews which dropped the bombs - the ‘Enola Gay’
from the Hiroshima mission and ‘Bockscar’ from Nagasaki.

    Paul Tibbets
Brigadier Paul Tibbets was the pilot of the bomber Enola Gay which dropped the first nuclear bomb. His is a key signature to any
wartime collection and Tony got him to sign both our own Buckingham Covers and several different American WWII Patriotic covers,
a small selection of which we offer below.

Sir Francis Chichester
Sir Francis Chichester (1901-1972) was a pioneering British aviator and sailor. In WWII he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve as an Air
Navigation Specialist and during his commission he wrote the kneeboard navigation manual for fighters to navigate across Europe.
He is most famous for being the first person to sail single handed around the world by the clipper route, for which he was knighted.
He set off on 27th August 1966 on his Gipsy Moth IV from Plymouth and returned after 226 days of sailing on 28th May 1967 having
           circumnavigated the globe.

Sir Edmund Hillary
Sir Edmund Hillary (1919 - 2008) was a New Zealand explorer who became the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29th
May 1953, along with his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Prior to the expedition Hillary joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1943 serving
as a navigator in the Pacific Theatre. After his Everest accomplishment he was part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition
which reached the South Pole in 1958 and later flew alongside Neil Armstrong to the North Pole, making him the first person to have
stood at both poles and the summit of Everest. Hillary also founded the Himalayan Trust which was dedicated to helping the Sherpas
by constructing many schools and hospitals across Nepal.
