R Thomas Edison Thomas Edison (1847 - 1931) has been described as America's greatest inventor who was responsible for an abundance of creations including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb. Edison held over 1,000 US patents as well as many here in the UK, and his work made a huge contribution to mass communication, industrial research, and electric generation and distribution systems. This stunning letter signed by Edison is on beautifully headed paper from the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison dated 1st July 1911 and reads 'I am sending my representative Mr James Ricalton to your part of the world to secure photographically characteristic scenes, life, and industries along your lines: any consideration you may be able to extend to him in the way of transportation will be a personal kindness to me'. Prior to the expedition Hillary joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1943 serving as a navigator in the Pacific Theatre. After his Everest accomplishment he was part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition which reached the South Pole in 1958 and later flew alongside Neil Armstrong to the North Pole, making him the first person to have stood at both poles and the summit of Everest. Hillary also founded the Himalayan Trust which was dedicated to helping the Sherpas by constructing many schools and hospitals across Nepal. 2002 Golden Jubilee.
