Officers President’s Message. Presidet James Moen 2555 Holly Oak Driver The AKC has developed Statistics showing that some breeds are getting smaller and Danville, CA 94506-2057 925-820-9072 smaller in terms of AKC registration and participation in events. The Puli is on the moenmail@yahoo.com list. While it is true that AKC statistics do not tell the whole story — many people Vice President with Pulik choose not to compete in AKC events—it is sobering to look at how few Brian Brubaker 201 Lamplite Dr breeders we list on our Breeders Information page compared to say 25 or more years Carlisle, PA 17013 ago. And many of our current breeders have been doing it for years. Clearly our 717-226-6317 spindriftpulik@icloud.com breed in the US needs more responsible breeders. The PCA Board is delighted to announce that there are TWO wonderful opportu- nities to host an upcoming National Specialty - 2021 and 2022 !!!!! It is helpful if the potential Show Chair is an experienced dog show person however that is not a requirement. What is necessary is a detail oriented person with the admirable traits of patience [ lots of patience ], people skills and a reasonable perspective to enjoy the experience and challenges that this rewarding role may encounter. Al- ways remember that as the PCA Show Chair, you will have the PCA Specialty Advisor Committee as an active re- source for you while you are planning, coordinating and carrying out the events. The PCA Constitution requires our National Specialty to be held in the month of September or October each year. A Regional Specialty and a supported entry show are generally also held on that same weekend. If this is a cluster weekend , more shows may be added . This means a prospective Show Chair would coordinate and man- age several events via committees that you as Show Chair would develop and oversee. If you are interested and need complete application or more detailed information on this opportunity, please promptly contact Brian Brubaker (717) 226 - 6317 or spindriftpulik@icloud.com. “LEXI” CH PIROSKAI KLOAK N DAGGER RN CGC VP 27 July 2003 - 23 January 2019 “Lexi” was my mom’s heart dog, faithfully staying by her side to the end. “Lexi” was very special to me, since she and her sister “Kai” marked the first time that my mom and I kept littermates. We often would compare developmental/behavioral notes for the sisters, which was a very special experience for us. “Lexi” raised great puppies, and she was active with later generations of Piroska Pulik, being warm and kind (yet firm) with puppies and adult dogs alike. She participated in many activities including conformation, Rally, CGC, and herding. “Lexi” was a great breed ambassador, patiently letting people touch her cords and give her many pats, as well as listening to a multitude of questions about and not rolling her eyes. She was a lover of carbs, enjoying the soft interior of a buttery croissant as much as a homemade peanut butter dog cookies. By the way, “Lexi” also authored “Great ExPUPtations! A Compilation of Observations about Whelping and Rearing An Ex- emplary Litter of Pulis.” This Puli diary was coauthored and printed by my mom and sold at a Puli National Specialty with all of the proceeds going to the Puli Club of America’s Way and Means Committee. “Lexi” took me under her wing after the unexpected passing of “Kai” many years ago, and she also was a great comfort after my mom’s passing a few years ago, sleeping with me every night in bed since then. I had come to realize, with a heavy heart, that it was time to return “Lexi” to my mom. Two yellow butterflies excitedly flying around me a few days later were the sign that my mom and “Lexi” were reunited. Until we all meet again…. Pulik December 2018—AKC Gazette Column Cords: The Puli’s Crown Having just participated recently in a Meet The Breed event at an AKC show, probably the most talked about feature of the Puli is its coat. People ask if it’s real and if the Puli is born that way; beg to touch it; and are of- ten surprised to hear that you don’t roll or braid the hair and that the cords do not unravel when you bathe the dog. But more interesting is that the coat is actually practical and functional for this breed. The corded coat of the Puli was mentioned as early at the 18th Century. The dense coat of the Puli developed over time to serve as insulation and protection from the environment and other rigors of nature (for example, hungry wolves) in its country of origin (Hungary). The corded coat also allowed for unrestricted movement, necessary when the Pu- li was herding sheep on the puszta. The puszta is a vast area of plains and wetlands in eastern Hungary used for the grazing of sheep and cattle. Here, the Puli would be constantly exposed to the whims of climate (bone- chilling winters and hot summers) and terrain. Nomadic shepherds found the Puli coat easy to maintain, and unlike the modern show dog with its floor-length cords (which many people are shocked to learn, take 5 years to get to that length), a working Puli in Hungary had its excess coat sheared in the spring just like the sheep. The Puli’s coat then did not need further attention till the following spring. The Puli is a double-coated breed, with a dense, soft, wooly undercoat and a longer, wiry, top coat. The under- coat tangles with the top coat to form felt-like cords. Without that balance, that coat will fail to mat and cord on its own. The soft undercoat hair acts as insulation, providing protection from the weather and the harsher top coat adds strength to the coat and repels moisture and dirt. The Puli coat is difficult to saturate with water, but once wet, takes a long time (hours) to dry. To learn more on what is involved with grooming this breed, the Puli Club of America provides useful resources: http://www.puliclub.org/wp/the-puli/grooming/. Back in 1966, Dr. Imre Ocsag (internationally renowned and respected Puli expert) presented his study on the Puli’s coat to the All-Union Cynological Council, where he described seven coat types for the breed, catego- rized by texture. These were: clustery; felt-like ribbon or corded; open hair type; short type; silky type; straight type; and wavy or shaggy type. Cords come in a variety of shapes including narrow cords; flat or ‘ribbon’ cords; thin cords resembling shoe- laces; heavy, very wide, mat-like cords; and even, rounded cords. Structure of the hair determines the cord type. All are correct within the standard since to initiate cords, a coat must have a proper balance between un- dercoat and top coat. No two Puli coats are exactly alike – they are unique in that the texture will vary, as well as the size and shape of the cords. The ideal cord was identified in the 1970s by Mr. Les Benis (an internation- ally recognized Puli expert) as the flat cord: proportionately uniform ribbon-lile tassels that are approximately the width of ½ an inch. People often make the mistake of trying to achieve that size at the onset of cording, but forget that the cord, with gravity and time, lengthens and thins. Make the cord too thin at the onset, and it will weaken over time and break off. A good rule of thumb is that the good cords come from an area of skin the size of a quarter. As cautioned already by Mr. Les Benis and Dr. Imre Bordacs in the 1970s -"….over-emphasis has been given lately to the length and profuseness of the coat, which, although impressive, often hides major faults and short- comings.” The AKC Standard allows for both the brushed and corded coat, and how the coat is presented in the show ring is a matter of the preference of the exhibitor, although overwhelmingly, the corded coat reigns supreme in the show ring. Crimping should be evident in the coat of a young Puli or one with a brushed coat, since that will tell you that the coat has the ability to cord. It should be noted that a judge’s final decision on awards should not be based on a Puli’s coat, but its structure, since one needs to keep in mind the purpose of the breed, which is herding, and form follows function. -Dagmar Fertl Puli Club of America www.puliclub.org (972)742-5206 Puli News—March 2019, Page 12
Pulik 03/2019—AKC Gazette Column Puppy of Achievement Pulik The AKC initiated the Puppy of Achievement (POA) program during September 2017 to encourage new owners of purebred puppies to become involved in the exciting world of conformation dog shows. POA points are earned by winning regular puppy classes or going Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex in the 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy (BPUP) competition. Puppies that earn 10 POA points automatically receive a certificate for their accomplishment. All dogs exhibited in the regular puppy classes or in BPUP competition are eligible to earn POA points. To learn more about the Puppy of Achievement program (including the point schedule), the AKC invites you to visit www.akc.org/events/puppy-of-achievement/. The AKC website provides helpful tips to a novice owner on how to pre- pare for conformation showing. Topics include teaching a puppy to wear a collar; to walk on a leash on your left side, and to be com- fortable meeting new people. Also incorporated is helpful information on what to expect at a dog show. Attending a local conformation handling class will help you and your puppy be more prepared in terms of what to expect when you’re showing. You will find both seasoned and novice handlers at these classes, which makes them a wonderful working and learning expe- rience, especially for puppies. You may contact a local dog club (i.e., kennel club) for information as to the location of those classes (the AKC website provides a list of Dog Clubs from all over the USA). One of the most important things to strive for is to make dog shows fun. However, a well-trained puppy makes it even more so. From the start of the program in 2017 to the end of November 2018, the AKC has issued the POA certificate to six Pulik: · Moonshadow Wonder Woman (“Diana” [F/black] bred by Barbara and Russell Pessina, owned by Dr. Laurel S Cain Denk/Marc C Denk/Christian A Denk/Ver A Cain) · Szentmihalyi-Szabo Cinkos (“Iceman” [M/white] bred by Katalin Szabone Ivanyi, owned by Larry Schroth Sr./Gail Schroth) · Applegate's Cream Of The Crop (“Trump” [M/white] bred by Frances Levinson, owned by Frances Levinson/Ronald Sullivan) · Bowmaker Flying Solo (“Solo” [F/black] bred and owned by Sherry Gibson) · Noe Barkaja Ragyogo Lelek (“Rags” [F/black] bred by Linda Meakin DVM and Cindy Boright and owned by Linda Meakin/Cindy Boright/Brian Brubaker/Alece Couman) · Feketedios Csoki (“Csoki” [M/black] bred by Janos Dobstadt, owned by Valarie Cheimis/Gary Cheimis) Each of these Pulik are proudly owned by members of the Puli Club of America (PCA). In terms of popularity (as reported by the AKC), the Puli ranks 142 out of 190, making it a rare breed, as well as categorized as a Low Entry Breed. For that reason, the PCA is encouraging all of its members, novice or experienced, to show their puppies. The Parent Club is hopeful that reputable Puli breeders are fostering buyers of show quality puppies to pursue dog showing. The PCA is working also to invigorate more Puli owners to join the parent club. We all need to do everything we can to encourage participation by those new to the breed. Dog shows are a wonder- ful place where dog owners can meet and develop life-long friendships. -Dagmar Fertl Puli Club of America Puli News - March 2019, Page 13
IIn February of 2019, PCA sponsored two agility trials, one in CA and one in Houston TX. Dagmar Fertl coordinated the trial in HoustonTX, Cathy Prozini the trial in CA Together the profits from the two trials netted around $4000 which will be used to sponsor agility at a future Specialty. In order to sponsor an Agility Trial, PCA must form a committee of at least 5 members to be present at the trial. PCA thanks those member who volunteered to serve on these committee. Dagmar reported on the trial in TX: Jumps! Tunnels! Flying Cords! The Puli Club of America held an AKC agility trial during 15-17 February in Spring, Texas (Houston area). The show site was Dog Gone Fun Agility’s facility, which is an indoor facility that is climate-controlled and has soccer turf. The trial was judged by Mary Mullen. This was a large show with more than 200 entries each day. Competition classes included Jumpers with Weaves, Standard, FAST, Time to Beat, as well as Premier Standard and Premier Jumpers. Over the course of the weekend, 5 dogs finished their Mas- ter Agility Champion and Preferred Agility Champion titles; gorgeous championship rosettes with the Hungarian flag colors were awarded, making this a great opportunity to educate many exhibitors on the country of origin for the Puli. Five Pulik from the Houston and New Orleans areas represented the breed and were fabulous ambassadors: “Szabo” run by Joe Lap- ine; “Eve” run by Terri Burrows; and “Snitch,” “Cash,” and “Quip” run by Dagmar Fertl. The five Pulik represented both the beginner and advanced levels of competition. Highlights included happy runs by all the Pulik, who received many applauses. Qualifying scores over the weekend were earned by “Snitch” and “Quip.” In fact, “Quip” finished two Novice agility titles at our Club’s trial. A huge, huge shout out of thanks to my fellow trial committee members who were present 9 AM to 4:30 PM each of the 3 days and worked VERY hard: Joe Lapine, Pam Erstling, Terri Burrows, and Randy McDaniel. Both Randy and Joe even did agility with Aus- sies! Randy ran “Kasey” while Joe’s teammate was “Shea;” both Aussies had some super runs. A special thanks to PCA Agility Chair Cathy Pronzini for getting the paperwork and other associated mechanics completed, so that this trial could take place. The Club received many compliments on how smoothly the trial ran and how relaxed and happy the at- mosphere was. PCA received a $2,000 check from the event, and this money has been earmarked for use at performance support activities at National specialties. -Dagmar Fertl Trial committee photo: (left to right). CH FUZZY FARM ALL THINGS CONSIDERED #1 ALL Breed, #10 Owner Handler “SPAETZLE“ Owneed by Steve Lawrence and Alice Lawrence Bred By Steve Lawrence, Patricia Turner, Anna Quigley, Alice Lawrence DOB: 12 April 2014 "Spaetzle" carried on the Fuzzy Farm tradition of Top Ten Pulis with a suc- cessful and fun 2018! With limited showing, only in the Northeast, he has made a mark in the show ring with multiple Group wins and has established himself as the Clown Prince of the Fuzzy Farm. Always eager to shake hands with everyone who goes by, he has become well known on the New England show circuit as the happiest Puli around. With correct Puli struc- ture, movement, and coat, Spaetzle has carried on the tradition of top- winning Fuzzy Farm Pulis. -- Steve Lawrence Puli News - March 2019, Page 19

The string cheese in the right pocket doesn’t hurt either. Anyway, we had a lot of fun competing in Conformation in 2018. Most shows are offering Owner- Handled as well as regular Variety Groups, and that suits him because he gets more ring visits and more treats throughout the day. He ended up doing pretty well with Jim on the other end of the lead and no advertising. Archie and Jim do not check the statistics as the year progresses, so they were both surprised he ended up tied for #3 Owner-Handled, all breeds. The compe- tition here in California is fierce in both group rings, which makes any win es- pecially nice. He also found time to go to herding training and also a few agili- ty classes with Cathy and together they picked up titles in those venues. We are thankful that Sue Huebner and Penny Kelley let Archie become part of our lives. I am especially honored to look back on her career and see so much recognition by other Puli breeders. This picture with Anna Quigley at the 2018 PCA Regional Specialty winning a BOB from among many other beautiful Pulis demonstrates her excellence in form and type. This excellence was also awarded by other judges qualifying her to the #3 all breed points position in very limited showing last year, 31 shows total. This year’s record was amazing but Ivy foremost is my girl and companion. She turned 9 in February and retired from the breed ring. She will, however, continue to show in performance events. We hope Barbe Pessina as her Breeder is proud of how she was presented and of her accomplishments. Ivy will continue to be a representative of the breed we love, something Ivy is proud to do. Julie Schuh GCH Moonshadow Mind Games #5 ALL Breed, #7 Breed, #3 Owner-Handler GYULA” “ Owned by Stacy Czekaj and Barbara Pessina Bred by Barbaa Pesssina and Russell Pesssina, DOB 25 April 2013 Last year’s “little engine that could did!” 2018 was truly a fun and exciting year for Gyula and his team. Hitting the road at 3:00 a.m., long rides, new towns, meeting new people and catching up with old friends proved both rewarding and of course exhausting particularly for the road crew. Competing in the U.S. and Canada, Gyula consistently performed well. While earning Puli top spot in Canada 2018, multiple highly competitive group wins and best in show performances made the effort worth- while and highly successful. Closer to home, competition was tough as well. That is encouraging for our group. Again, Gyula did a solid job representing himself and the breed. Now five (5) years old, Gyula has upped his game, shows with confidence, welcomes the competition and appears to enjoy his time in the ring. For that, many thanks to all our friends and a very special thanks to Barb Pessina for her ongoing help and support. When asked, Gyula gave much of the credit to his older brother and past Puli champi- on, Marley Czekaj. Retired at age fourteen (14), Gyula’s personal life coach has worked extensively with him at home developing critical outside the ring soft skills including getting anything you want, never having to say “I’m sorry,” mastering nap theory, and how not to get excited about everything! Sometimes king of the ring, Gyula knows Marley is still king of the house. Nevertheless, despite his often funny games and daily challenges to his brother’s alpha authority, Gyula admits he’s learned a lot, knows the house rules, has fun with his pal and wants him to be proud. When asked about his impact, Marley responded “Keeps me sharp. Time to eat yet?” Stacy and Mark continue living the dream having won the lottery last year. Just kid- ding. Nusbickel: DOB: 11 March 2014 All Pulis are “characters” in their own way but Teddy seems to have an extra dose of it. He loves toys and balls that squeak and playing games. Teddy is the most quick-footed and agile Puli I have ever had. It is a pleasure to watch him in the yard speeding around to catch a ball with cords flying. He loves to play soccer but his goal is to puncture the ball as soon as pos- sible. Inside, he is a snuggler either next to me with his head in my lap or laying on the bed with his head on the pillow. I am so grateful to everyone over almost 50 years with whom I have owned, raised and bred Pulis and who have shared their Puli bloodlines with me beginning with CH Skysyl Alamode from Ann Bowley. Looking at Teddy's pedigree is like a trip down memory lane. I see Skysyl, Gooseberry Hill, Wallbanger, Bokar and going back to the great imports CH Kal- lopusztai Apor and CH Csanyteleki Cigany. Special thanks to co-owners and co-breeders Susan Maass, Linda and Gary Hall, and Carolyn Nusbickel. It is gratifyingf to see Teddy's offspring succeeding in the show ring now. She always shows like a champ, and moves like a dream. She is a fun Puli, who likes to do silly things, play with her toys and still enjoys romping with her almost 2 year old pups. Pippa will be in a lot of dog shows this current year. Her beautiful silver coat is quite unusual amongst Pulis in the show ring. We always get questions about her coat. She started out a black puppy, and the coat turned to silver by the time she was 3. We hope to give Pippa a chance at some herding lessons this Spring as well. She’s got great herding instinct. She was amazing to watch during her In- stinct testing at our Specialty in 2017 in Tennessee. Her 2 pups seem to have herding instinct as well. —Fran Levinson Puli News - March 2019, Page 25

When I got Buda I was not sure if I would do conformation, agility, or some other activity with him. I have only owned herding breeds and when our last Bouvier died we wanted a smaller herding breed. The problem was most of the usual options I did not care for. At the time my husband was working with the Hungarian division at work and spending a lot of time in Hungary. I got a call from him telling me he found the breed for us!! Boy was he right. After lots of research I traveled to Hungary with him and visited Buda’s Breeder. We came home with a puli! At that time I never dreamed I would be doing so much showing. I loved that so many puli are Owner Handled and thought I would give it a try! I was hooked!! Buda has been a great sport with me dragging him around to shows and this past year we had a great time competing in OH. Buda even got an OH Reserve Best in Show this year! We hope to continue with our success for again this year. And am so happy that we have met so many great people while showing! I also want to thank my wonderful breeder for taking inviting us to her kennel and introducing us to this wonderful breed. AKC Canine Health Foundation Puli Club of America, Inc. For 2019, the AKC is again providing dollar-for-dollar donations to CHF’s general canine health research fund for any donations you make to canine cancer (up to $250K), any donations from new and lapsed donors (last donation prior to 1/1/18) up to $400,000, and for any Donor Advised Fund disbursements to any CHF research program area of your choice (up to $350,000). To view CHF’s new and active research for canine health, please visit the 2019 Research Grants Portfolio and updated addendum of new grants. You can also search active grants by research program area onour website. Please contact us or visit akcchf.org to learn more about specific grants, research program areas, or to receive a list of projects of special interest to your breed or organization. You can also demonstrate your compassion and commitment to canine health by honoring or memorializing a special dog or person with an AKC Canine Health Foundation tribute card. We will send a card announcing your gift and your donation will help support canine health research and provide educational resources to dog lovers everywhere. Lastly, please consider joining CHF by becoming a member club. With your membership, you’ll receive a membership banner suitable for hanging at dog shows and other events, or a wall plaque suitable for hanging indoors. Plus, you’ll receive Discoveries, CHF’s quarterly newsletter detailing the latest advancements in CHF-funded research. Thank you for your continued commitment to CHF’s mission to help all dogs live longer, healthier lives. We appreciate your partnership, and we are stronger working together toward our common goal for healthy dogs. Sincerely, The Staff and Board of Directors of the AKC Canine Health Foundation Puli News—March 2019, Page 26
