Matera Matera is one of the most interesting, unusual and memorable tourist destinations in Italy. Curious visitors can wander the lanes alongside the picturesque cave-filled cliffs, and learn the history of this fascinating place. The houses of Matera were abandoned in the '50s, when the government, embarrassed by the descriptions of the poverty amongst the people of the Sassi found in Carlo Levi's tale of his own exile Christ Stopped in Eboli, relocated the residents to modern housing. The Sassi are slowly being repopulated as trendy digs by artistic types.
