             COVID 19 UPDATES - PROVINCETOWN
                      --------------------------------
                              A MESSAGE FROM
                    Town Manager Alex Morse

Due to positive downward trends in COVID-19 virus case numbers and
rates of positive test results the mask mandate was reduced to an
indoor mask advisory. The indoor mask advisory recommends that
masking indoors continue in indoor spaces when individuals are not
eating or drinking, Morse said.

"The Town of Provincetown — it’s people, businesses, and visitors — should be
incredibly proud of how they’ve addressed the ongoing challenges brought forth
by COVID throughout the last several weeks," said Town Manager Alex Morse
"While our Town was thrust into the national spotlight by being among the first to
confront the Delta variant and its contagious nature, we showcased what it looks
like for a community to come together and do what is necessary to stop the
spread and protect the public’s health."

Many local businesses and organizations will continue to have an indoor mask
mandate. The town will be available, if necessary, to support an individual
business policy.

                          COVID TESTING
The last day for free COVID-19 virus mobile testing at the
Veterans Memorial Community Center at 2 Mayflower St.
       will be Labor Day, Monday, September 6th 10am - 3pm .

Covid testing will continue to be available at

Center for Coastal Studies, Laura Ludwig and all the volunteers!

On what may have been the hottest summer day yet, volunteers with the Center for Coastal Studies
Beach Brigade headed out over the west end breakwater in Provincetown to conduct a shoreline cleanup
on Wednesday, August 25th.

A dozen volunteers hiked out to Wood End in the morning to move debris items from the flats and rocks
to higher ground for removal by boat at high tide later in the day.

Legacy aquaculture gear - abandoned in the '80s when an unknown parasite destroyed the clam fishery
at the time - was excavated from the moors on the west side of the breakwater, yielding 56 clam trays,
leaded line, mesh netting and a pailful of rusted steel staples.

Rope, netting and insulation were cut out of the rocks; soda bottles and face masks were pulled from the
cracks; and in what might be the oddest trash removal effort to date, a regulation-size ping pong table
was hauled up from its mired location in the flats onto the breakwater, a transfer requiring many hands
and careful engineering.
At high tide, three boats (Bethany Lynn, Jolly and Flyer's) made their way carefully to the breakwater to
retrieve all the cached debris and bring it to the shore by the Provincetown Inn. The clam trays were
saved for future use, and the remainder of the trash and fishing debris were brought to the transfer
station. Beyond repair, the ping pong table was hoisted out by crane at the pier and sent to the scrap
metal pile. In all, over 1,000 pounds of trash was disposed of.

Stay Safe at the Beach - SHARKS
Lifeguards are on duty at Cape Cod National Seashore Beaches for the summer. Read and heed advisories at

Warning: Keep Wildlife Wild
Wildlife accustomed to being fed may become aggressive in attempts to obtain food. This includes coyote and fox.
There have been serious incidents in the past few years involving bites to people and pets. Keep your distance and
do not feed wildlife.
Rangers have been responding to incidents of coyotes acting assertively toward people in attempts to obtain
food. This behavior starts with people feeding the coyotes intentionally by leaving food out, or inadvertently by not
removing food scraps and packaging from the beach. This leads to the animals becoming habituated and bold in
attempts to obtain food. When wild animals lose their fear of people, they behave unpredictably and aggressively,
resulting in injuries to people and a sad ending for the habituated animal.

Keep wildlife wild. Protect your safety and the safety of others.
Do not feed or attract wildlife! Report assertive coyote sightings
to rangers or the dispatch center at 617-242-5659.

The Swim for Life is pleased to enlist the creative talent of Jim Youngerman, a longtime Swim for Life
swimmer from Lenox, MA, to imagine and execute the 2021 Swim for Life design. A design is created
annually for the event, becoming the Swim logo, and is treasured as a testament to the generous and
artistic soul of the Outer Cape.
“The design for this year’s T-shirt grew out of a series of paintings I did this past spring which depict the
vague space we are all going through during the pandemic. The sort of outside/in and inside/outness of
our lives as we struggle to find a new normal, a new balance. The transparent walls allow the viewer to
see the bright horizon. The open and endless feeling one senses on the outer cape is captured in the
painting. Across the waters is a reminiscent view of Long Point lighthouse, where the Swim first began.
The color and tones and prayer ribbons which float out of the picture frame, reflect a hopefulness we feel
as a community, as we make waves and come together and forge a brave new course through uncharted
waters.” ~ Jim Youngerman
Jim has been a painter for the past 50 years, having solo exhibitions extensively throughout the US and
Europe. His work has been favorably reviewed, here and abroad in such publications as Art News, Arts
Magazine and Art in America. Arts Magazine once said of his work, “the content of Youngerman’s work is
the creation of a far-reaching mind, combining elements perhaps derived from dreams, or the product of
completely unharnessed meanderings of the imagination.” In 1980, he designed an award winning
theatrical set for The Man Who Killed the Budha in Los Angeles. He has subsequently designed many
sets for music, dance and theater. This summer he is designing the set for a production of King Lear at
Shakespeare & Co., Lenox, MA.

The legendary fundraiser, the Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, sponsored by the
Provincetown Community Compact, will Make Waves on Saturday, September 11, 2021
with a new afternoon harbor shoreline swim route, a new time, and a new post-Swim Mermaid
Tea! Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla has raised over $5M since 1988 for AIDS,
women’s health and the community. Proof of vaccinations will be required of all participants and
the public. Local and CDC guidelines will be followed.

“The Swim and the community made waves in response to HIV/AIDS and now we have a renewed
mission to strengthen our resilience as we act to create a more diverse and equitable future,”
states artist and Compact Director Jay Critchley. “Let’s come together once again in a celebration
in the town that we all love and support.”

Hi Everyone!

The move is underway and as of 9/1 we will be officially ensconced in our new office. It's a great
location at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, giving us better access to not only the Chamber
but also Coastal Community Capital.

So come check out the new digs--our office, meeting rooms/area and conference room. We're
excited and want you to see it. Take a tour and then spend some time reconnecting with everyone
and actually meeting all our new volunteers "in person."

We have a special lunch catered by Dr. Grillology, Ken Foster, the owner of Breakaway Grills and
a longtime SCORE client. Ken is bringing over his 16,000 lb. (it's pretty crazy) rolling BBQ to grill
up some burgers and dogs. Need a veggie burger? Just let us know when you sign up.

You've never been to a bigger BBQ! Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Get your order in so we have enough dogs!

CARE for the Cape & Islands will be holding its seventh annual CARE for the Cape & Islands Day
on Thursday, October 21, and extends an invitation to area businesses to participate in a half day of
service benefiting a local nonprofit tourism attraction.
This event involves hands-on volunteer service that helps to repair or improve its infrastructure of a local
nonprofit while offering volunteer participants an opportunity to learn more about the mission of CARE
for the Cape & Islands, and how businesses can help preserve and protect the natural environment,
cultural and historical treasures of Cape Cod.

This year’s beneficiary nonprofit is Chatham Drama Guild. Director of CARE for the Cape & Islands Jill
Talladay said, “We are delighted to be helping Chatham Drama Guild this year, a staple of Cape Cod
culture and a continuously operating local theatre for over 80 years. As always, this annual event
provides much needed volunteer service at a significant value to the nonprofit and offers a wonderful
opportunity to make an enormous impact without an ongoing commitment.”

In past years, volunteers from local businesses have assisted with a variety of activities including painting,
staining, gardening, and trail maintenance at Cape Wildlife Center, Waquoit Bay Reserve, Marconi
Maritime Center, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Nobska Light and Long Pasture Wildlife
Sanctuary. The events always conclude with a presentation from current year CARE grant recipients, a
tour of the nonprofit’s facility, and lunch.

CARE Day will take place at Chatham Drama Guild located at 134 Crowell Rd in Chatham.
The day’s schedule is as follows:

· 8:30-9:00 AM - Coffee & welcome
· 9:00 AM-11:30 AM Hands-on volunteer and cleanup activities
· 11:30-1:00 PM- Lunch and CARE Grant Recipient presentations

Each volunteer representing a local business is required to register and a $25 donation is requested to
support CARE grant program. Registration and sponsorship details may be found at

The New Urgency: Taking Care of Our Employees
If the pandemic wasn’t enough in the absolute, we now know it also exacerbated an issue that business
owners were cognizant of, but didn’t consider critical—finding employees. With many owners having

employee than to hire a new one. So let's rethink how we manage and engage employees...

Bowersock is known for his surreal and dreamscape oil paintings, in multiple genres - landscape, still life and
figurative. For this exhibit he's focused largely on the latter. Amongst his current collection is a series which
explores the individual as experienced from the inside, and viewed from the outside. Other pieces explore his
search for a place in a culture that isn't always welcoming of his nature. He says, "My latest work is a channeled
self-discovery, where there's heavy usage of symbols, the language of the universe. For example, animals can be
seen as totems, with rich spiritual meaning behind them, an exploration of lessons. Hands are 'all protective,'
'welcoming'...and of G-d or the other guy's realm, depending on how the viewer interprets positioning.”

McCartin's work is largely contemporary polychrome, narrative sculpture. The works are a touch theater, tarot
card, Rorschach inkblots, along with personal and cultural statements, with the story always the focus.
Her primary materials are cellulose and polymer clays, and papier mache.

at the Castle Hill Gallery in Truro

The Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill announces an exhibit of works by clay arAsts Mark Shapiro and Sam
Taylor will be on display from August 24 – September 3 at the Castle Hill Gallery, 10 MeeAnghouse Road, Truro.

This show brings together works from two of the arAsts teaching workshops this summer at Castle Hill in ceramics.
They co-teach, one a hand builder and one who works on the wheel. Both of their poBery is atmospheric firings.
With Salt /soda and or wood firing.

Mark Shapiro’s experience with ceramics in high school led him into a successful career as a poBer. In 1986,
Shapiro opened his own poBery studio based on the idea of producing funcAonal wares. He likens his working style
to that of ancient poBers producing large quanAAes of beauAful, funcAonal pots. He conAnues to live and work at
his western MassachuseBs studio (stonepoolpottery.com), where he produces about one hundred pots a week.

Sam Taylor uses wood to fire his stoneware ceramics. A lover of funcAonal poBery, Taylor’s pots are always
funcAonal, although as he admits, some are “preSer to look at while other pieces are more rewarding to use.”
Taylor studied ceramics in Wisconsin and now makes his home in Westhampton, MassachuseBs. His business, Dog
Bar PoBery (dogbarpottery.com), is named aMer the Dog Bar Breakwater in Gloucester, MA, where he once lived
and made pots.

“If many of Johnson's paintings are titled after the places that inspired them,
no such places actually exist. Each one is a collage of compressed intimacies
spread out over the months it takes to paint them. He has done what Edwin
Dickinson called Premier Coup, in which a painting is completed outdoors in
one blow. Yet his typical practice is to hold a painting for several months, or
more, in the studio, to see if a painting stands the test of repeated looking,
often involving the process of memory revision, where a succession of
impressions gained over weeks or months is expressed as continuous flow.”

Paintings by Mitchell Johnson, 2005-2021”. The exhibit will be on view September 7-17 with a reception
Thursday September 9, 4-6. This survey exhibit of 16 small paintings offers a chance to consider the
impact of Cape Cod’s particular light and topography on the work of visiting artists. When Mitchell
Johnson arrived in Truro in May 2005 his work was moving away from the brushy expressionistic
landscapes and figures he had been exhibiting for over 15 years, towards paintings built with large
shapes and an emphasis on color. Just weeks before arriving at the East Harbour Motel on Route 6 at
North Truro’s famous Pilgrim Beach, Johnson had painted Buonconvento (Ferrovia), 2005, plate 2,
during a trip to Italy. The breakthrough in Ferrovia was reinforced by a chance viewing of a Josef
Albers/Giorgio Morandi exhibit in Bologna at the end of the Italy trip. These experiences dovetailed with
Johnson’s first encounter with the tip of Cape Cod.
ent or could have guessed their work would be the impetus for committing to my new direction. Seeing
the show in Bologna was a realization that I’d like to combine Morandi’s feeling for composition or
pattern with Albers approach to color. The ever changing bands of color provided by sand, water,
buildings and sky offer the possibility to explore such a mixture.

Leo Manso: Collages and Other Works
Curated by Eugene Fedorko | July 2 – October 17, 2021
This exhibition features approximately 30 works from PAAM’s permanent collection and a private
collection. Coupled with travels to Mexico, Italy, India, and a host of Africa countries, Manso extensively
read Buddhist, Hindu, and Tantric philosophies and these experiences became the cornerstone of his
artistic practice. A master collagist, Manso achieved a sense of simultaneity and dynamism while
manipulating color and form to put his viewer in a meditative state.

The Silent Side of a Shiver: Photographs by Francis Olschafskie
Curated by Breon Dunigan | July 23 – September 19, 2021
This exhibition presents a selection of over 20 recent photographs by Francis Olschafskie. The
photographs on view are primarily from the last decade and are the results of a period of intense
concentration on a particular set of subjects, methods, and sources that embody a culmination of his
ideas and interests from his extensive photographic career.
