Perfect picnic pairings at Kew. Few vocations demonstrate the interconnectedness of all things with the clarity of winemaking. To explore wine is to cultivate an awareness of history, culture, geography, agriculture, meteorology, chemistry, biology, geology, economics, and much more. It’s a thoroughly comprehensive discipline. As we move forward and the province gradually recovers from the impact of COVID-19, Ontario’s wine industry will play an important role. Innovative, forward-thinking and responsible, our local wineries have always been central to the cultural, economic and environmental health of their communities. Here, we take a look at the sustainability and charitable initiatives undertaken by some of these local wineries and spotlight others whose leadership and/or forays into emerging regions speak to their innovative spirit and optimism. Kew Vineyards Estate Winery Beamsville Kew Vineyards was first planted in 1975 by the late Hermann Weis, whose family founded Germany’s iconic St. Urbans-Hof. In the early 1970s, prevailing wisdom insisted that Niagara was not suited to vinifera (the grapes responsible for the finest wines of Europe). But Weis saw potential for greatness in the region, plant- ing his Clone 21 Riesling in select sites and, in doing so, helping to usher in a new era of quality winemaking. Mr. Weis passed away on March 8, 2020, aged 85. History is fundamental at Kew. The Bordeaux blend Soldier’s Grant honours Richard Kew, who was awarded the land where the vineyard now stands by the Canadian government after the War of 1812. “We suggest pairing the Soldier’s Grant with the braised lamb osso buco with porcini mushroom risotto from Just Cooking. The restaurant is right around the corner from the winery, and owner Tim Cherry has been a huge supporter of ours.” KEW SOLDIER’S GRANT 2017 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula Full-bodied & Smooth 367318 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2 The beautiful tasting room at Kew Vineyards.
