DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE This year marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, the federal law that laid the groundwork for man- agement of migratory bird populations in North America. Our agency works cooperatively with other conservation agencies and organizations to develop scientifically sound management practices that uphold the principles of this landmark legislation. We are fortunate in Virginia to have a diversity of habi- tats, from the coast to the mountains, which support an abundance of migratory game birds. By working cooperatively with public and private landowners to manage these habitats Williamstown, MA | Birmingham, AL effectively, we have been able to maintain healthy bird popu- lations and provide a variety of recreational opportunities for migratory bird hunters. These begin with the opening of dove and Canada goose seasons in early September, continue through the fall and winter with duck, woodcock, rail and snipe seasons, and conclude with Canada goose and snow goose seasons in February and March. About This Guide We enjoy an abundance of wildlife in Virginia thanks to sportsmen and women like you who are passionate about hunting. The outlook for this year’s bird hunting seasons is promising. Duck and goose populations have been above average for the past several years, dove numbers This high-quality guide is offered to you remain high, and most other bird populations are doing well. With a little help from Mother by the Virginia Department of Game and Nature, birds should arrive in Virginia in good numbers this fall. Through the Federal Assistance in Wildlife Restoration program, you help the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries make wildlife-oriented outdoor recreation even better each time you buy a firearm, ammunition, or a hunting or trapping license. When you buy hunting-related equipment, a portion of the excise tax levied on the manufacturer goes to the Federal Assistance in Wildlife Restoration pro- gram. Virginia currently receives over $12 million each year from this program, which funds a large portion of the Department’s habitat management and wild- life population research projects.
