All things Safari – What you need to know So you’ve decided to go on an African safari, how do you go about choosing where to go, when to travel, and how to plan your trip? Some of the answers are straightforward: South Africa offers the best malaria- free safaris for young kids; Kenya is the most accommodating safari destination for tight budgets; Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe boast the best water- based safaris; July to September in the Masai Mara is the golden window for Great Migration river-crossings. Maybe you’re set on bucket list visits such as Victoria Falls or the Ngorongoro Crater. However, even once you know where you’re going there’s still a lot to be decided. We’ve put together all the information you need to begin planning the right safari for you. Know your animals If you’re on the hunt to see particular species, make sure you’re visiting the right parks and reserves! Your best chances of seeing the ‘Big Five’ are in flagship parks such as the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Kruger. If it’s flamingos you’re after then head to Kenya’s Lake Nakuru or Lake Bogoria. Gorillas can most easily be encountered in Rwanda’s Volcano National Park or Bwindi, Uganda, whilst Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains National Park is an excellent spot to track chimpanzees. Whatever your priorities, speak to our dedicated team who will help you put together the right itinerary. Drive or fly? The first thing to decide is what kind of safari you want. Vehicle-based safaris are where most people begin – your driver-guide will take care of you and the 4X4 will transport your belongings every step of the way. As well as the advantage of getting to know your guide very well over the course of the trip, this is also the cheapest form of safari. The only disadvantage is that some journeys can be up to 5 hours long, depending on road surface and traffic. For a premium, a flying safari can be organised, rapidly transporting you between parks via light aircraft (15kg luggage permitted). Moreover, you also gain an impressive aerial view of the rugged African landscape. Drivers from each lodge will meet you on arrival and conduct your game drives. 24 Somak Holidays
When to go Africa is a vast and fascinating continent, with so many different climates and habitat types that there’s plenty to see all through the year. Every safari country we offer can be an excellent destination year-round, though wildlife migrations, rainfall, prices, tourist concentration, and school holidays mean different people will have different preferences. For many, the fantastic deals at beautiful properties during low season are irresistible, and for those keen to compromise, a shoulder season safari offers good game viewing without the August price-tag. What’s more, away from peak season, safari-goers are far more likely to avoid crowds of vehicles around wildlife and get that big game moment all to themselves. January-March Tanzania’s southern Serengeti plays host to the wildebeest calving season. In the Mara water levels drop and dramatic hippo fights break out over valuable water holes. Birdwatching in East and southern Africa benefits from an influx of migrant species such as the Steppes Eagle. Botswana’s salt pans see a high wildlife concentration. Great prices and superb general game viewing can be found across most of East Africa. This is also the best time for a beach holiday to Cape Town. April-June Southern Africa’s dry season begins and the weather cools. Meanwhile, the Okavango Delta starts to flood, and the Victoria Falls flow rates reach their peak. Rwanda & Uganda’s gorillas descend to lower altitudes in search of food. Large herds of elephants wander the Mara with their calves. In Tanzania, the wildebeest migration reaches the Western Serengeti. Birding remains good, with more inter-African migrants as species return to the northern hemisphere for summer. This is also when the best discounts and deals across some of East Africa’s finest safari lodges can be found. July-September Africa’s prime game-viewing season is full of wildlife experiences. The wildebeest migration crosses crocodile- infested rivers and lion-patrolled plains to reach the Masai Mara around July. Zebra- and wildebeest-viewing across the northern Serengeti and the Mara is spectacular for months. In the Okavango Delta water levels peak, and safari conditions in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia approach their best. Whale-watching conditions in South Africa are excellent, and the dry season in Rwanda and Uganda reduces mosquito numbers. October-December Northern hemisphere bird species arrive in large numbers to East and southern Africa. In East Africa, the Kenyan lakes come into their own, and for those wishing to summit Kilimanjaro, September-October is the best time of year for your climb. Chobe National Park sees large herds of elephants and buffalos gather. Gorilla-trekking in Rwanda and Uganda benefits from clearer air providing the best photographic conditions. Across southern Africa, at this time of year, prices are generally lower, yet there is still the chance for some fabulous game viewing before the dry season ends. www.somak.co.uk 25

Somak cares After a week of awe-inspiring animal sightings, stunning sunsets and much-appreciated luxury, Amanda, Tolly and the group were lucky enough to visit Voi’s extremely under-funded Kalela Primary School and get to know a different side of Kenya. As we drove through the rusted gates and across the red dust of the small, uneven schoolyard, some of the school’s 965 children ran to meet us, wearing their huge smiles and scruffy uniforms with beaming pride. Pupils at Kalela Primary School The school’s charismatic headmaster showed us around the grounds, happily pointing out the new visitor-funded projects, sneaking us into classrooms, and explaining the challenges facing an ever-growing student population supported by a minute budget. Classrooms were packed with kids; outnumbered teachers did their best with a few battered old books and a good dose of enthusiasm. The headmaster’s own office was a miniature yet well-kept space no bigger than a large cupboard. At the end of the tour, a showcase had been organised, and a group of young children sang, danced and performed in several languages from several cultures, delighted by the occasion and thrilled to be listened to. We arrived not knowing what to expect, but were incredibly moved by these children with so little given to them, who were, nevertheless, so full of life, so warm and open. Happiness truly is a state of mind, and it’s only when you see how little some people have, that you truly appreciate how much you take for granted. Visiting Kalela made our adventures in Kenya so much more than just a holiday, it created a true life experience. Kalela Primary School 28 Somak Holidays
