Welcome from the Festival Co-Director Hello Friends, and welcome to the 34th Annual Connecticut LGBTQ Film Festival! Though I have been involved with the Festival for five years, this is my first as co-director of Out Film CT — and what a year it has been! This time last year, we were figuring out whether or not hosting a festival was feasible in the midst of a global health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to re-imagine what our festival would look like given the new and necessary Rising restrictions. Despite those challenges last year, we persevered in bringing you the most films we have ever programed! Using our new virtual platform, we were able Star to expand our audience base far beyond the Hartford area, even to some surrounding states. Now that great strides have been made in managing the COVID-19 crisis, we are able to take the virtual and socially distanced delivery Award! of last year’s festival and combine it with our traditional, in-person style to bring you a truly hybrid film festival — with in-person screenings at Cinestudio and online via the Eventive platform. I am proud and humbled by the Festival Committee’s efforts in making this Since 1988, Out Film CT has showcased the films of happen. The LGBTQ community’s history is rooted in fighting for social justice, and as a LGBTQ organization, generation of artists and enthusiasts. Through the Rising we are committed to telling our collective stories through film and digital Star Award, we hope to honor her legacy by investing in media. This year’s program includes a diverse set of stories that represent the community she considered her family. BIPOC individuals from across the spectrum. We are all the richer for these perspectives. MICHAEL SELIGMAN & JENNIFER TIEXIERA • 2020 • 100 MIN. • USA • ENGLISH A box of letters, held in secret for nearly 60 years, opens a chapter of LGBT history that has been sealed for decades. The letters, written in the 1950s by a group of New York City drag queens, resurrect a forgotten world, where being yourself meant breaking the law, and where the penalties for men “masquerading” as women were swift and severe. This stylistically inventive documentary uses original interviews, never-before-seen archival footage and photographs, and innovative recreations to portray the pre-Stonewall era these drag queens lived in. Now in their 80s and 90s, they reveal how they survived and somehow flourished at a time when the government sought to destroy them, and then history tried to erase them.
