PROUD TO BE BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2021 www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk Celebrating Black History Month in Enfield www.enfield.gov.uk/BHM2021
Welcome to Black History Month 2021. The theme for this year is Proud to Be, which encourages black people of all ages to share why they are Proud To Be and how we’re all making history in our own ways. By asking people to share why they are Proud to Be we can share both individual stories and the vast richness of diversity that black people bring to the UK. In Enfield, we are proud to do what we can to make each years’ Black History Month celebrations reflective of our diverse and dynamic communities. This year our community groups have been working hard with our officers at Enfield Council to create an exciting, informative programme of events happening borough wide throughout the month of October for everyone to enjoy. We have produced a brochure capturing the events planned for the month which can be found here: www.enfield.gov.uk/BHM2021 We are delighted to have curated a great mix of events for your enjoyment. We are holding music events, community workshops, and a season of films as part of the online Ponders End Film Festival. We will celebrate black women in our recent past, invite you to food festivals, online panel discussions, a new Covid 19 documentary aimed at the Caribbean community and much more. In doing so, we hope to showcase the terrific contribution our diverse black communities make in Enfield and help illuminate what has been a challenging 12 months for all of us. Black History Month is a time to celebrate, and a time to reflect on what we still need to do to achieve equality. The effects of the pandemic have and continue to be especially hard felt by our local Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and has reminded us again of the journey we still need to travel. I hope that Black History Month 2021 can provide an opportunity to give some relief to and shine some light towards those in the borough who may have had to face loss or hardship in recent times. We stand together with you. Doing what I can to build and support cohesive communities is a vital part of my work as Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion and a fundamental part of what Enfield Council seeks to do to help create a better, fairer Enfield for all of us. I hope whatever plans you have throughout Black History Month you all keep safe and enjoy the celebrations of a very important and inspiring historic month in 2021. Be proud to be. Cllr Nneka Keazor Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion COVID-19 Notice: Based on current government COVID-19 guidelines for events, we respectfully ask you not to attend this event on the day if: • you have been advised to self-isolate because you, or someone you have been in contact with, have been displaying any COVID-19 symptoms, or • you, or anyone you live with, have one or more of the symptoms, whether or not you think it is COVID-19.
