A note on studying the apocalypse in the midst of an apocalypse The pandemic is hard This pandemic is unequal If you think this is the flu and all just a bunch of noise— come talk to me about the last 11 months of my life after covid. Engaging with others is one of the hardest things to do in a pandemic when we can’t be together. Engagement with each other and with ideas is EVERYTHING in this class.
Why is the class set up this way? I can’t reliably be at work every single day. So I started recording my lectures in November I want to talk to you face to face not lecture into a void. So I lecture into a void and record it then I show up here to discuss and answer questions. If no one has any questions we can just play solitaire or something.

Syllabus Use of technology Cell phones in class Email and miscellany during lecture. Don’t do it. It is annoying and disrespectful. But…you will probably do it anyway so…. Using off-task technology makes you learn less (Wood et al. 2012) 15 texts in a lecture is associated with a full letter grade drop in comprehension (Rosen et al. 2011) Using your phone more makes you less happy and lowers your GPA (Lepp et al. 2014)
Syllabus Assignments turned in via Canvas (Packback, Turnitin) Late Assignments Packback grades are generated automatically, no extensions or exceptions possible. You can miss 5 points (1 question + 1 response) with no penalty or have those points count as extra credit if you prefer (that isn’t 5% of your grade BTW) Extensions granted within reason if you contact me before the assignment is due. No extensions granted after the assignment is due. A late assignment without an extension is a zero grade.
