Full-time Skills Course Livestock Production Provides new farmers with an excellent grounding in livestock production. Includes modules in beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goat production, pig production, artificial insemination and farm SAQA Credits: 43 business management. Duration of the course 2 ½ months. 11 January – 19 March 2021 | 12 July – 17 September 2021 Vegetable Production The course equips trainees with the expertise and skills to set up their own vegetable production business in the open field or under hydroponics. It includes topics such as land preparation, planting, fertilisation, disease and pest control, irrigation, harvesting and the marketing of vegetables. SAQA Credits: 49 Duration of course: 3 ½ months. 08 February – 09 April 2021 | 09 August – 08 October 2021 Poultry Production The course equips trainees with the knowledge and ability to set up their own poultry farming unit; broiler and layer production. The content includes housing, feeding, disease control, brooding, record keeping, processing and marketing of poultry products. Duration of course: 2 months. Short Courses Tractor Operation and Maintenance This course teaches professional tractor operations. This includes driving the tractor, optimal use of implements for land preparation and maintenance of the tractor. Dates: 12 - 16 April 2021 | 11 – 15 October 2021 Introduction to Layer House Management This course serves to introduce the important aspects of managing a layer hen unit. Topics include housing, bird health, egg collection, record-keeping, and marketing. Dates: 24 - 28 May 2021 | 26 -30 July 2021 Introduction to Broiler Production This course teaches the essential aspects of broiler production, including chick management, feeding programmes and biosecurity measures. Dates: 3-7 May 2021 | 02 -06 August 2021 Introduction to Piggery Management This course introduces the basic aspects of managing a piggery unit, including piggery biosecurity, breed choice, breeding and reproduction, disease management, feeding and nutrition. Short Courses Hydroponics This course introduces the basic principles of vegetable production under hydroponics. This includes the different Systems and Structures and Growth Medium that can be used in a hydroponic system. The course delves into the suitable Crops and Cultivars that flourish in this type of system. There is focus on sustainabilty in Pest and Disease management, Fertigation, Irrigation, Sanitation to ensure the highest qulaity crop establishment and hygiene principles. Dates: 05-09 July 2021 | 29 November - 03 December 2021 Seedling Production This course teaches the essential of propagation of a variety of vegetable and crop seedlings in a nursery environment. Practical application in a vairety of growth mediums, water management systems, together with relevant biosecurity to ensure the correct evaluation of seedling readiness for transplantation. Dates: 12 - 16 July 2021 | 18 -22 October 2021 Introduction to Basic Vegetable Production This introduction to vegetable production focuses on the principles of vegetable production under irrigation. The basic course presents the procedures of soil analysis and land preparation, correct planting procedures which includes plant spacing and the safe and correct use of chemicals for pest and weed eradication.
