What is MCORE?
The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) has partnered with the City of Champaign, City of Urbana, and the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to improve mobility in the core of our community through a federal
Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant. The $35M Multimodal Corridor
Enhancement (MCORE) Project is unprecedented in our community’s history and will have a transformative impact.
The goal of MCORE is to provide a balance between all modes of transportation. MCORE will enhance mobility
choices with improvements to pedestrian access routes, bicycle lanes, transit efficiency, and vehicle flow. It will also
upgrade our infrastructure by bringing the streets of these core transit corridors into a state of good repair while
redesigning them into complete streets to accommodate all users. The completion of the MCORE Project will provide
better connections for critical linkages between the downtown centers of Champaign and Urbana, the University, and
the area’s major employers, health, and social service organizations.
MCORE will encourage sustainable development through improvements for an enriched built environment, sense of
place, and quality of life. With an emphasis on all modes of transportation, this project can decrease the use of single
occupancy vehicles, thereby reducing congestion, traffic hazards, and carbon emissions.

Three of the five scheduled MCORE projects have already been completed and Project 4 began in March 2019. The
full project corridor includes Armory Avenue, (between Fourth Street and Wright Street) and Wright Street (between
Armory Avenue and Springfield Avenue).
Project 4 will provide reconstruction of the existing pavement, sidewalks, pavement markings, and replacement of the
storm and sanitary sewers. The project will occur in stages, over two construction seasons, with a final completion date
of December 2020. This booklet provides details on MTD’s route changes associated with Stage 2 of Project 4.
There are expected to be three stages of construction with three different sets of reroutes as work progresses:
Stage 1: March – May
The first stage involves rebuilding the northbound lane of Wright Street from south of Chalmers Street to south of
Green Street. Northbound traffic will be maintained throughout this stage.
Stage 2: May – August
Stage 2 involves the rebuilding of Armory Avenue from Sixth Street to Wright Street and on Wright Street to south of
Chalmers Street. This includes the entire intersection of Sixth and Armory. The south side of Armory Street between
Fourth Street and Sixth Street will also be under construction.
Stage 3: August – December
The third stage will happen during the fall semester and will continue until the winter shutdown at the end of
November. This involves rebuilding Wright Street, much like Stage 1, but expanding work to the southbound lane of
Wright Street. Additionally, work will also take place on the north side of Armory Street between Fourth Street and
Sixth Street. And once again, northbound traffic will be maintained on Wright Street during this construction on the
southbound lane.

Major reroutes are being planned to accommodate the construction schedule for Project 4. The goal of the
reroutes is to have as little impact on our passengers and routes as possible. The reroutes have been designed to
maximize the efficiency of streets and transit facilities that are available and reasonable to use.
MTD appreciates your cooperation and understanding during this important project. Information on Stage 3
reroutes will be released as Project 4 continues to move forward. To receive additional updates on MCORE route
