Board of Directors A Fond Farewell to Anthony Kupferschmidt It is with bittersweetness that we announce that Anthony Kupferschmidt, our esteemed WESN Executive Director, will be moving on to a new opportunity in the seniors services sector. His last day with us will be August 6th after which he will forge a new path at the helm of the Langley Senior Resources Society. He is excited to help support a new community and very keen to expand his expertise in the leadership of an adult day program. Anthony has been part of the fabric of WESN for the last 6 years as our Executive Director. Over the course of his leadership WESN has expanded to support more seniors and provide more diverse programming than ever before. Anthony has become a staple at Barclay Manor, with his kind smile and welcoming spirit, and we will miss the care and attention he has paid to building relationships with and between WESN members. Always articulate and passionate, Anthony has raised the profile and deepened the impact of WESN both locally and provincially, playing a leading role in the formation of the Alliance of Seniors’ Centres of BC, as well as becoming a go-to organization for policy makers, media and others on seniors’ related issues in Vancouver. Not one to shy away from a challenge, during COVID-19 Anthony took WESN leadership to the next level, successfully enabling us to become a Response Hub agency and ensure our community was supported and connected during the pandemic. From a Board of Directors’ perspective, we will miss Anthony’s leadership. He ushered in a strategic and operational plan that will allow us to continue to meet our community’s needs for years to come. Always an advocate for the voice of seniors in the West End community, he has kept us grounded, raised important issues and developed an organization that will continue to achieve. The staff at Clothes and Collectibles, Kay’s Place and Barclay Manor, and WESN volunteers and the Board of Directors will have many fond memories of their time with Anthony. Anthony, we can’t thank you enough for your commitment to WESN and advocating for our community seniors’ voice. From all of us at WESN. 7
Barclay Manor Anthony Kupferschmidt Executive Director After more than six years working at this amazing organization, I am sad to share I will be leaving the West End Seniors’ Network on Friday, August 6. I will be joining the Langley Senior Resources Society as Executive Director later in August. While I am very excited about this new opportunity and next step in my career, I will miss WESN and this neighbourhood deeply. When I first moved to Vancouver, I chose to live in the West End. I had no idea what a fortuitous decision I was making at the time! I learned about this wonderful local agency serving older adults, and soon after I became a WESN member to show my support and stay informed. When the Executive Director position became available, the opportunity to contribute to an organization supporting my preferred demographic group in the neighbourhood I called home seemed too good to be true! Needless to say, I was thrilled when I was offered the job. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together over the last six years. WESN has grown in many ways, by adding new programs and services and setting new records for funds raised and number of members, clients, customers, volunteers and staff. I am so pleased to be leaving WESN in such a strong financial position, with such an amazing team, and with a stronger profile as a leading organization serving older adults in Vancouver. I also know WESN can look forward to even greater success in the years ahead. I am confident the next Executive Director will work with the Board and staff team to take this organization even further. There is some incredible work on the horizon, and I am proud to have helped lay the foundation for important next steps for the community-based seniors service sector. Over the next few years WESN will be the lead agency in the formation of the Network of Organizations in Vancouver on Aging (or NOVA), a city-wide collective of agencies serving older adults to help ensure Vancouver can become more of an age-friendly city. WESN has also played a lead role in developing the Alliance of Seniors’ Centres of B.C., and we are poised to bring other seniors’ centres into the fold in the coming months. As many of you know, my interactions with all of you have fuelled my passion for working at an organization like WESN. Most of all, I will miss our conversations and seeing your faces, and I will always cherish my time here. Please continue to age well and stay involved in this community, and WESN will be here to support you. There will be a farewell party on Friday, August 6 (please see P. 7 for more information). I hope you can join us, as I would welcome the opportunity to say farewell and thank you in person. 8
Barclay Manor Kari Kesslar COVID-19 Community Response Hub Manager The Check-In Phone Calls and Emails service has provided a much needed social connection for many older adults living in the West End, particularly over these past months with the recommendations to stay safe by self-isolating. Currently WESN has 47 volunteers making calls to approximately 80 older adults. Despite restrictions easing, we know that these calls will continue to be an important addition to the lives of people in our community. During the recent heat wave, volunteers were able to provide a check to see how folks were managing and alert WESN staff to any concerns. One volunteer and the older adult she was calling worked to distract themselves from the heat by sharing with each other their best methods for staying cool. They were kind enough to share some of their tips to include in our newsletter. Helpful ideas, and a bit of a giggle. Thanks F and J! “At one point last Tuesday as dawn was cracking ... I whacked the side of my face on feeling a bug crawling there ... ahhhhh, it wasn’t a bug ... it was a river of sweat running down to my neck. It was definitely time to muster all the means available to cool down the action! Here are some goodies from last week’s calls: • Nightgowns and undies in plastic bags in the fridge for refreshing changes as needed. • Also stored in fridge: Evian water facial spray - or just plain old water in a spray bottle, moisturizer, lotions, lip balm (oh, and leave some space for food). • Put feet in a basin of cold water, while watching your favourite TV program - especially good if the program shows icebergs and penguins. • A fridge packed with “instant” everything - NO food that has to be cooked or needs dishes! • Drink tons of water - keep fun stuff in the bathroom to pass the time because you’re going to be in there a lot! • Fill a hot water bottle with cold water for bedtime. • Wear cottons - not synthetic fibres (or as a person-who-shall-be-nameless told me she does...) go topless around the house! (Be sure the drapes are closed!) • During the hottest hours, hone being a couch-potato to a fine art - comfy position, cold-pack for neck, electric fan blowing.” Barclay Manor Kaitlin Hong Tai Manager of Programs More and more programs are returning, and new programs are always starting up. A few programs are slated to come back in September as well, so we are getting close to pre-pandemic programming levels! There have been some room shuffles from July now that the individual room capacities at Barclay Manor have been lifted. Please check the whiteboard at the front entrance for the most up-to-date room information. A reminder that masks are still mandatory at all three of our locations (indoors) this month. Please refrain from eating and drinking. This rule is in place to better protect staff, volunteers and members who are awaiting their second COVID-19 vaccine doses. Hopefully, we will be able to remove masks and bring back coffee, tea and snacks in September. 9
Barclay Manor Emily Lonsdale LinkAGE Social Prescribing Navigator Getting to know LinkAGE Social Prescribing Social prescribing is a unique community service that can be customized to the needs and existing supports available locally. Social prescribing also provides crucial connections between health care and community resources. Specifically, LinkAGE Social Prescribing provides health care professionals with the ability to refer older adults at risk of frailty or those experiencing social isolation to a service that connects them with the appropriate non-medical supports within the West End, Coal Harbour, and Yaletown neighbourhoods of Vancouver. As a LinkAGE Social Prescribing Navigator I receive referrals from health care professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses, social workers) and then connect with the referred older adult to learn about their experiences and help co-construct personalized wellness goals. Together with the older adult we determine next steps and actions to help them work towards these goals. Social prescribing actions could include: linking the older adult to local educational or recreational programming, setting up a check-in caller or pen pal, or highlighting neighbourhood volunteer opportunities that match the person’s interests and abilities. In addition, the older adult might be connected to local resources that help them to continue living in the same home or community safely, independently, and comfortably, as they age. This might look like connection to a shop-by-phone grocery and delivery service, or assistance around the house through light housekeeping services or minor home repairs. Together, link workers and health care professionals can use innovative models like social prescribing to support community-dwelling older adults and match them to the right opportunities to feel included, healthy and valued within their neighbourhoods. If you have questions about the LinkAGE Social Prescribing service, or would like the LinkAGE Navigator to connect with your health care provider please contact Emily at 604-669-5051 x 7, health@wesn.ca or check out the WESN blog for more information: http://wesn.ca/blog/ Social Prescribing Model At-risk Prescribing Older Health Care Link Worker Community Adults Professional or Navigator Connection 10

Barclay Manor Abbie Purdy Manager of Volunteer Resources It is with sadness that I must let all the wonderful WESN volunteers know that I will be leaving my position as Manager of Volunteer Resources on September 10, 2021. My partner and I will be leaving Canada and moving to New Zealand to begin a new adventure there. Words can not adequately express how grateful I am to WESN and the welcoming West End community for providing me with my Vancouver family and making me feel so at home, so far from home. It has been a privilege to get to work in the neighbourhood I live in and to get to know and share stories with members, volunteers and clients alike. The last 3 years with WESN have been the absolute best of my time in Canada and I will really miss it here. I plan to visit Vancouver as often as I am able to, and you can be sure that when I do, I will be stopping by WESN to say hello. I wish you all the best and may our paths cross again in the future! Clothes and Collectibles Laura Fee Manager When I started with WESN over five years ago, a discount of 25% on purchases over $3 was in place. I thought this was exceptionally generous on well-priced, quality used clothing and goods. Many of our customers agreed and to this day I continue to receive comments about why we offer any discount at all, and why our prices aren’t higher. I even had individuals tell me they will not donate to us because we’re, in their words, ‘giving away’ their quality items. I receive far more comments about our prices being too low and our discounts too high, than the other way around. In October 2019, we made the decision to reduce our members discount to 10%. This year, we are eliminating the membership discount altogether. Starting October 1st, 2021, after our Annual General Meeting in September, there will no longer be a discount for members at Clothes and Collectibles. Being a WESN member will continue to offer many benefits, including access to programs, events, workshops and presentations at our Barclay Manor location and services available at our Barclay Manor and Kay’s Place locations. As always, I welcome your input, and if there’s hardship, please come and speak to me.
