We encourage you to visit our web page at www.lexingtonma.gov/recreation. Registration is first come, first served and will be available beginning May 7, 2018 at 8:00am. All participants must complete registration and submit payment and waiver release in order to be eligible to partici- pate in a program. Non-resident registration will begin two weeks after resident registration starts. There is a $5.00 (youth and senior) or $10.00 (adult) additional fee for all non-resident program registrations. We accept cash, check, MasterCard, VI- SA, or Discover for mail-in or walk-in registration; credit cards only for online and phone registrations. Financial Aid A request for financial aid is available online, in person or by calling. Requests are reviewed through a confidential process through the Human Services Department. The amount of scholarship awarded is determined by individual need and availa- ble funds with the Recreation & Community Programs Enterprise Fund. Swimming in Lexington The Recreation and Community Programs Department operates two outdoor swimming facilities during the sum- mer months. The opening date for both facilities is June 2, 2018. The Old Reservoir, located on Marrett Road, is a fresh water pond with a sandy beach. Open seven days per week from 10:30am to 7:00pm, it is a favorite place for families and children. The Irving H. Mabee Town Pool Complex, located on Worthen Road at the Center Recreation Complex, is also open seven days per week. On weekdays, a variety of programs including American Red Cross swim lessons, adult lap swim, adult aqua aerobics, and Swim Team share pool space, but generally the public swim hours are weekdays 12:45—4:30pm and 7:00—8:45pm. Swim lesson information, registration procedures, and dates will be included in the summer program brochure, published in late April. Passes will be available for purchase at the Lexington Community Center beginning Monday, March 12th. Please note, no refunds or credits are given are given for the purchase of a swim pass. Purchase your swim pass early. Students will have the opportunity to play high level tournament chess while learning rules and strategies designed to raise their level of play. The champion- ship will be divided into sections according to age and grade level. All players will receive a trophy or medal according to their performance. The tournament will be directed by Jim Della Selva (United States Chess Federation Expert). Rules and strategies will be taught by Jim Della Selva and Bill Richard. This is a tournament that is not USCF rated but will be based on many, if not all, of their rules. It is an opportunity for serious chess players with little or no tournament experience. For more experienced players a chess clock will be available to use for game play. Youth and Teen Programs LEXINGTON POLICE EXPLORERS POST #1575 SUMMER YOUTH ACADEMY The Lexington Police Department will be hosting a two week youth summer Academy to introduce the many facets of the Law Enforcement Explorer program and Public Safety. Topics covered during the program will include: First Aid/CPR Team Building Introduction to Law Enforcement Lexington Police Department History and Programs Fun and Games Academy Dates 1st Session: July 23rd—August 3rd 2nd Session: August 13th—24th This program, which is for individuals between the ages of 12-17, will be offered Monday-Friday from 8:30am-2:30pm and time will be spent indoors and out. Interested Candidates should pick up an application packet at the Police Station our fill out and submit online: www.lexingtonma.gov/sites/lexingtonma/files/uploads/academy_application_2018.pdf Completed applications are due by July 16th for Session One and August 6th for Session Two. ICE SKATING LESSONS Learn to Skate classes are for participants ages 3 and up who have little to no formal skating experience. Skaters should wear warm, com- fortable clothing that allows for movement; waterproof clothing and gloves are strongly recommended for skaters ages 3-6. A helmet (such as a bike helmet) is required and rental skates are available (free of charge) on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants should arrive 15-20 minutes prior to the class start time. Learn to Skate—Ages 3-16: For individuals with little or no formal skating instruction, our group classes teach skating basics in a fun and comfortable environment. Classes include 20-25 minutes of group instruction and up to 5 minutes of free time. Skaters will be grouped by age and/or ability as needed. Participants must be at least 3 years old and potty-trained. Teen/Adult Skating—Ages 16+: Learn to skate or enhance skating skills in a fun and comfortable learning environment. Adult Programs SUMMER ADULT TENNIS LESSONS $80 per person The Summer Adult Tennis Lessons are designed to give all players, regardless of ability, the opportunity to learn new skills and/or improve existing ones. The summer session will include 6 lessons. The Thursday evening lessons will be led by Chew-Hoong Koh and the Saturday lessons will be led be Barry Ndinya. New this summer, the Tuesday evening lessons will be led by Natalia Pronchick. In addition to playing tennis at Union College, Natalia is currently studying occupational therapy in grad school. The lessons will take place at the Gallagher Ten- nis Courts #1 and #2 at the Center Recreation Complex on Worthen Road. Intermediate — For those wishing to perfect their strokes through drills with emphasis on consistency, singles and doubles strategy, and match play. WOMEN’S FITNESS BOOT CAMP Under the direction of Paul McManus, this popular 8-week fitness program is designed specifically for women and will incorporate upper and lower body weight exercise as well as cardiovascular activities. Band work and many body exercises will be included. All levels of abil- ity are welcome to participate. Women should bring a jump rope, exercise mat, and two 5-10 lb. hand weights. There will be an online component to this course which must be completed prior to the start date. Adult Programs BASIC FORMS OF WU STYLE TAIJI Taiji Quan is one kind of internal martial art for both self-defense and health. It is suitable for all ages to practice. The internal martial art is not only focused on self-defense but also to stimulate your energy and improve your immune system for overall health benefits. The re- search shows that Taiji is beneficial for improving leg muscle strength and balance function for all ages. Build new bone with progressive strength training tar- geted to the most common osteoporotic sites - spine, hip, and wrists without bisphosphonates. Learn the best nutrition tips for bone health and practice drills that will help prevent falls and improve mobility. Participants will be in a fun and supportive environment where many fitness levels are addressed. This class is designed for post-menopausal women who have or who are at risk for osteoporosis, howev- er, anyone looking for strengthening and balance development is welcome. The Lexington Recreation and Community Programs Department is excited to announce its partnership with www.playlocal.com, a first of its kind platform that partners with towns and cities to allow tennis players to easily reserve tennis courts online and find similarly skilled players. There is a highly engaged and active tennis playing community in Lexing- ton and this will help take the guessing game of court availability out of the equation for our residents! The program went live on April 1, 2018. The online reservation service is in addition to the Town’s Tennis ID cards. Summer Youth Sports Clinics MINUTEMAN STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING CLINIC Led by George Peterson, LHS Varsity Football Coach, this clinic is open to male and female athletes entering Grades 9—12. The goal of this program is to help each athlete optimize his or her athletic potential by developing proper mechanics and exercise program to increase flexibility, speed, and strength. Program specialties will include linear and lateral acceleration and strength training and other areas of focus will include warm-up drills, dynamic stretch- ing, plyometrics, foam rolling, calisthenics, conditioning, flexibility, and hand-eye coordination. SUMMER ADAPTIVE MULTI-SPORTS PROGRAM This program is designed to offer children with a cognitive or physical disability the opportunity to learn and play multiple sports in a cooperative, non-threatening, fun environment. The program takes into consideration the indi- vidual needs and abilities of every participant, and modifications are made to the game and training to allow full par- ticipation and enjoyment for each child. Summer Basketball League The Summer In-Town Basketball League is an organized recreational program for those who are looking to continue playing during the summer. This will be a 5 week league with the top two teams playing an additional week. Participants are allowed up to 2 re- quests for teammates. Games will be played at Center Basketball Courts under the lights. The start date for the league will be July 10th. The cost of the pro- gram is $70.00 per person. This fee includes a game jersey. CIRCUIT LAB—CITCUIT MAKERS 101 Let’s get creative with electricity! In this junior version of our Hands-On Electronics class, students will gain experience with creating their own electronics; designing custom light-up greeting cards, electric games, mazes, and even musical instruments. Each class day consists of a circuitry lesson and a hands-on electronics project, using components like lights, buzzers, switches, motors, and sensors. Circuit Lab staff will make sure participants create a project that they can be proud of each day. Most class days include a take-home project. INCREDIFLIX—ANIMATION & MINECRAFT MOVIE COMBO FLIX In the morning use your creativity and brain power with other students to create awesome stop-motion effects, then in the afternoon bring all your favorite Minecraft characters out from the computer and into the real world! Students who sign up for the full day will have a super- vised lunch, please pack your own lunch. All IncrediFlix classes are focused on expanding imagination and creativity using hands-on activi- ties. Kids will learn brainstorming, story structure, and storyboarding in all camps. In animation camps, kids will create characters, back- grounds, film, and do voice-overs. In live action filmmaking camps, kids will location scout, act, fil, and learn filmmaking strategies. All flix’s are professionally edited and will be downloadable within a month after camp ends.
