8 Tom's Story 9 ‘War and its after effects have Tom’s Story Tom’s Story been kept secret. Now, thankfully, that is changing.’ Speaking publicly about the profound effects of war has become an important part of Tom’s life. Known for his candid discussions, Tom will often start a talk by stating, ‘You can ask me anything you want.’ Born in Malaney, Tom is the middle child of a farming family. Leaving school at fourteen, Tom did odd jobs until joining the army in 1959. The army gave him further education, and he trained as a mechanic, eventually gaining Associate Diplomas in Aircraft Engineering and Training and Development. In 1969 Tom was posted to Vietnam and served for 1 year, 1 week and 3 days. He had to leave his wife Sandy and three small children behind. Returning home, Sandy could see how Tom had changed. ‘Tom craved solitude, he felt disconnected,’ Sandy says. Tom eventually found help in early 2000 for his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His journey back to health has been a catalyst for his public speaking. Tom’s driving force is to support families as they re-adjust to post-service life. Recognising men’s reluctance to speak about their feelings, Tom is open about his own recovery. Having found a way to move through profound trauma, he understands how important it is to have good support. Tom is Mentor more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au president of his Unit Association (Victoria Branch); he is presently organizing the 54th year reunion. He has served as President of the RSL, Legacy and as Secretary of the RAAF Association (Ballarat). ‘We’d never heard of PTSD,’ Tom says. ‘Now, thankfully, services are a lot better.’ Vietnam veteran Tom loves building and flying model aircraft and ‘tinkering’ in the shed. He adores the company of his children and grandchildren. He Public speaker Swimming instructor is an avid gardener and looks after his wife Sandy. They have been married 54 years. Tom now lives in Mt. Pleasant which has spectacular views. ‘I can watch the fireworks on the lake from my lounge room window,’ he says smiling. ‘It’s a wonderful place.’ Brave

24 Mary's Story 25 ‘Just before I wake up I can have Mary’s Story Mary’s Story this moment and I think, my experiences have taken me to extraordinary places and I’ve met so many amazing people. And I’m just an ordinary person.’ Mary is a wonderful and inspiring human being. Struck down with an auto-immune disease, she spent four years critically ill until finally receiving a liver transplant. ‘I got the call three weeks before my daughter’s wedding. It meant that I could be there, it meant that I could live my life again.’ Since the transplant fourteen years ago, Mary has dived into living a life of service. Her illness and then her regained good health have had a profound impact on her. ‘My donor was younger, I was older. She didn’t get the rest of her life and I did.’ Mary’s awareness of the gift she has received has given her an acute sense of purpose. ‘I can’t imagine what it’s like for a family to face the death of a loved one, and at that time to turn it around and be so generous. I’m honoring that gift.’ Volunteer Mary gives talks on behalf of Donate Life about organ donation. more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au She is a member of Transplant Australia and helps run support groups. ‘It’s an amazing community,’ Mary says. ‘It’s positive, Transplant Recipient generous, it embraces life.’ She is a warden at her local church, works in the children’s ministry, volunteers at the local school and also volunteers at Grateful Lord Somers Camps. ‘I came from a family of high social conscience. I learnt it from my Purposeful parents, and I am passing it on. The reality is there’s not enough donors. I want to be as purposeful as I can. To be kind, to be useful, to advocate for others. That to me, is everything.’ Zestful Mary lives in Frankston surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She embraces everything that comes her way.

30 Helen's Story 31 ‘I’ve been a jack of all trades. Helen's Story Helen's Story Things have been pretty hard, but it has made me stronger.’ Grinding poverty is still prevalent amongst Aboriginal communities. Helen has seen its effects first hand. ‘Even when I was small I was thinking, when I grow up, I’m going to help my people.’ Helen remembers working seasonally alongside her husband Keith in the early days of their marriage. ‘Sometimes we were lucky to get an old barn, or an old cow shed to live in whilst we were working. I had two small children by then.’ She has vivid memories of children around them dying from diarrhea or chest infections. A proud Gunai woman, Helen and a group of visionary Aboriginal women founded the Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative in Bairnsdale in 1971 which provides childcare, cultural education, health, housing and welfare services. There was a great need for proper medical care within the Aboriginal community. ‘Things were so hard,’ Helen says quietly. ‘Can you imagine, our people just wandering around, with nowhere to live?’ Helen is the mother of six children and both Helen and Keith worked full time whilst raising their family. She now has over one hundred grandchildren and great grandchildren. ‘It’s amazing,’ Helen says smiling. Helen’s love for her community has seen her caring for Aboriginal Elder patients in hospital and their homes. She helped to set up the East more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au more events available at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au Gippsland Aboriginal Women’s Group and she also looked after children in state run homes. ‘I’ve been a jack of all trades,’ says Helen. ‘Things have been pretty hard, but it has made me stronger.’ Matriarch Warrior Helen has spent her whole life quietly going about her business and doing extraordinary things. Naturally shy, she has seen many things that have caused her deep pain. Her resilient spirit and active Mother participation in finding solutions for her people continue to shape her life. ‘My biggest issue now is how our people are getting buried. Why do we have to pay big money for our burials? And we should have the opportunity to be buried with our families. On common ground.’ Elegant
