These will be stored in an oven. Then I’ll overlay a lot of opal blue over enamel white to create a brilliant sky blue. My assistant will gather clear glass a few times. When the gather is ready I’ll use a torch to preheat areas of the bubble and begin sticking the pinwheels onto the preheated surface. Once we have everything applied and nicely worked in we will blow and sculpt the form with cork blocks. I’ll punty it once, close it off, and finish it with just a small pinhole to let air escape. And we’ll be doing it all with masks on! Thanks to the Studio for creating and installing a mechanical inflation system so we can still blow glass during Covid-19. www.clairekellyglass.com | www.cmog.org | @clairekellyglass HOT DEMO | Leo Tecosky Revolution | 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM (PDT) This demonstration will encompass multiple processes to create glasswork that addresses our Civil Rights movement. Techniques covered will be stuffed cups, hot sculpting, experimental enamel work, glass graffiti, and activism. This virtual venue will be the perfect platform to encourage and embolden all of us to use our medium, glass, to tell the world that we stand for what’s right and bring glass as an art form to the table of artistic activism. I plan to sculpt blown letterforms, arrows, and stars into a composition resembling a graffiti “throw-up” or bubble letter style that shouts out the Black Lives Matter movement. www.leotecosky.com | @anserglass BACK TO TOP 12

Essentially a klein is a 3D representation of infinity and the 4th dimension. I’ve been fascinated with this concept for quite some time and recently came up with a way to modify it into a functional piece. Earl Jr. will go through the process of making a klein bottle. The klein bottle process gives the viewer several aspects of making internal seals and shaping. It’s a great way for a beginner to gain a further understanding of scientific glass work. @earljrglass GALLERY TOUR | Traver Gallery Mel Douglas Exhibition | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM (PDT) | Register Here Join us for a special tour at the renowned Traver Gallery, located in Seattle, WA and dedicated to contemporary glass art! HOT DEMO | Kensuke Takeoka Line Transition | 10:00 PM - 12:00AM (PDT) My work is knitting, a structure with glass lines. By blowing the glass, the shape is rounded out. Each regular line changes softly depending on the force that swells outside. A line is born from the melted glass. The process by which it becomes a structure and becomes three-dimensional appears in the work as a movement of the line. @kensuketakeoka BACK TO TOP 14
Pre-Recorded Presentations Pre-recorded presentations released on each day of the conference can be found by clicking the “Pre-Recorded Presentations” button within THE HUB in the VIRTUAL 2021 event on Remo (pictured below). This will open an exclusive GAS webpage that features playlists with links to each presentation video. CULTURAL LECTURE | Pilar Aldana-Méndez Glass, Lights & Color at the Sagrada Familia Temple - Barcelona | 48 Minutes Thanks to the experience in the treatment of light in my sculptural glasswork, I was in charge of the creation of nine sculptures in solid glass for the top of the Sacristy Tower for the Sagrada Familia Temple in Barcelona, a very special commission from the architects of the temple. The project took place between 2014 and 2016. This lecture will discuss the evolution of the project with the realization in the Czech Republic and details of the installation. The lecture includes my deep research about light and color at the Temple presented by amazing photos taken all year round to catch the different effects of light. The study of the presence of glass as a key element to creating the warm atmosphere predicted by Gaudi. The research includes the stained glass windows, the lanterns suspended in the ceiling, the sculptures in glass, and the Venetian glass mosaics of the pinnacles. I also present the concepts of rule geometry used by Gaudi to create the architectural patterns that will flood the interior of the temple with light, his research about color by Tricomy, and his experiments to measure the vibration of colors. The Sagrada Familia Temple is a great treasure of the cultural heritage of humanity. It is the condensation of more than one century of research, experience, and actions initiated by the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudi and followed by the coherent group of architects, industrials, craftsmen, and artists who have worked and who still continue to build the temple. www.aldana-mendez.net | www.pilaraldana-mendez.blogspot.com | @pilar.aldanamendez PERSONAL EXPERIENCE LECTURE | Claire Bell Glass graffiti; Starting from Scratch | 39 Minutes From November 5th, 2020, I took the plunge and went full-time as a mural engraver and mirror maker. This presentation will document how I got there, the history of the medium, and the creation of public and private artwork from then up to the conference in this unusual medium. BACK TO TOP 15
Mural engraving is an inspiring, but largely forgotten art in the studio glass world, pioneered by New Zealander John Hutton in the 1950s for The Great West Screen in Coventry Cathedral, England. It involves the use of float glass as a canvas for the engraver’s images, which are engraved using large and small drills. I was lucky enough to have a mentorship in 2017 with English engraver Jennifer Conway, who learned this technique from John and his son Warrick Hutton in the 1970s. While there, under her suggestion, I applied for and gained a 2018 Rakow Research residency at the Corning Museum Library to expand my practice and learn about applying mirror-making techniques to my engravings. In 2019-2020 I was given the opportunity to scale up and design and create engraved bus shelters for John Hutton’s hometown of Whanganui, where I now live. One is finished, and two are going to be drawn up and engraved over the next three months, alongside smaller works for galleries and other in and outdoor commissions. There are not many of us working today in this way, and I’d like to lift the lid and share it with you all. www.clairebell.glass | @claireellenbell TECHNICAL LECMO | Vanessa Cutler Industry and I | 31 Minutes This will be a demonstration of how I work with industry and water jet technology. Many ask about the process and this would be an opportunity to go through the manufacture of a piece of work from the CAD work and drawings through to the industrial collaboration and end result. It will cover the use of the various machines that have been employed in my work over recent years from 3-axis through to 5-axis. It will offer insight and tips to the accessibility of using the process, its benefits, and insight into my practice www.vanessacutler.com | @vanessacutler FILM | María Eugenia Diaz de Vivar Glass by Ibero-American Women | 38 Minutes This video documentary brings together a selection of outstanding women in the field of glass in Ibero-America. Artists, directors of institutions, designers, among others. Each of them will make a description of their work, explain what the glass represents for them and what their next projects are. The objective is to spread the work of these women and the influence they are generating in the community with their contribution. With the hashtag #glassbywomen we want to promote women's work and maybe think about generating an award from the GAS for future editions. I disagree. Glassmaking throughout history has had environmental impacts, deforestation for fuel, mining for materials, and localized impacts of production. While many glassblowers hold little to no historical guilt for our craft, as we move into the ever-pressing concerns of a warming climate, now is the time to reckon with our impact on our environment and ensure that our collective contributions are higher than our consumption. As our society moves away from glass and toward plastic as a default, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the long-lasting repercussions of this. Glass isn’t blameless, for our medium has gone from a symbol of wealth to nearly being considered as disposable as plastic. Countless glass artists continue to draw upon nature for inspiration. The beauty of the natural world has an incredible pull. As most artists learn throughout the creation process, an attachment to the source of inspiration is to be expected. In turn, glassblowers use their artistic expression to create societal awareness, which spurs and ignites genuine change. I’ve found that having one foot in both the art and scientific world proves difficult at times, but ultimately beneficial. With a bit of history, science, and plenty of glass magic, I hope to show why turning up the heat isn’t inevitable. The allure and inherent value of glass, combined with the limitless potential of glass’s recyclability and use, make it a clear choice for the planet. www.celiagarland.com | @celiagarland PERSONAL PRACTICE LECTURE | Romina Gonzales Energy in Motion | 32 Minutes Glass has the ability to record irreplicable moments. I will speak about its memory, its responsiveness, and the development of methods for increasing productivity and scale. I will discuss three techniques that are essential to my work in glass: pulling, mechanical inflation, and controlled disruption. BACK TO TOP 17
“Finding The Window” consists of ladled masses of glass stretched while molten using only heat and gravity. “Formations” are amorphous pieces made by dropping solid gathers onto a surface and inflating them with compressed air. Both of these processes involve making a finalized piece in one go using solely the temperature provided by the furnace. “Molecular Tension” explores abrupt temperature changes in blown forms by super-cooling an area with compressed air until natural breakage occurs, as one portion of the piece contracts forcibly while the other portion remains expanded and relaxed. These three techniques revolve around a gesture and intend to capture e-motion, defined here as energy-in-motion. Glass is outstanding as a vehicle to translate the vibrational frequencies that exist in this material world, exceptionally illustrating that our biology is our biography. Through observation, investigation, and experimentation, I approach glassmaking as a study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world and its contemporary applications. By presenting glass in a condition that the public isn't normally used to encounter, perceptions of what is possible expands. This experience then translates into other areas of life, allowing us to live more consciously, openly, and fully. www.rominagonzales.com BUSINESS PRACTICE LECTURE | Jason Harris Successful Studios in a Tumultuous Climate | 42 Minutes I will present a lecture that talks about how to maintain a successful studio and sustainable glass art business in this tumultuous climate through a pivot. www.jeromebaker.com GAS PANEL | Jessica Jane Julius, Brandi P. Clark, Leo Tecosky + Mike Saroka Looking Forward: GAS Mission, Vision + Values | 15 Minutes www.glassart.org TECHNICAL LECTURE | Dr. Jessamy Kelly + Dr. Goshka Bialek Entrapment: The development of inclusions and inner space within glass | 58 Minutes A talk about the use of intentional inclusions and inner space within art glass. A short history of inclusions in glass will be presented alongside a range of different techniques that are used when adding glass or metal inclusions to glass. We will also present some of the material compatibility problems we have solved during our research when mixing other materials with glass. In addition, a selection of artists that use other inclusions in glass such as air inclusions, pre-made glass inclusions, and print will be discussed. This talk sets out the parameters of the field providing an in-depth study into the concept and use of inclusions which plays an important part in understanding why so many artists use inclusions in their practice. Through this talk, we will define and explore the variety of ways, both from a historical and contemporary perspective, that inclusions in glass, have been combined together over many years. www.jessamykellyglass.com | www. goshkabialek.pl BACK TO TOP 18
SOCIAL ISSUES LECTURE | Silvia Levenson Political Revelation in Glass | 30 Minutes I was born in Argentina and I had to emigrate to Italy during the Argentinean dictatorship. All my work is connected with social and political issues: the work of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo in Argentina, violence against women, racism, and discrimination against refugees. I was working with Berlin Glass and the Glass Biennale in the UK with refugees and immigrants. I will show how glass can be a medium for speaking about conflicts and how art can modify the feeling of viewers. www.silvialevenson.com | www.youtube.com/c/silvialevenson | @silvia_levenson COLD ENGRAVING DEMO | Eliška Monsportová Engraved | 14 Minutes I would like to start my presentation by introducing myself, my curriculum vitae, my studies, main inspiration, resources, and motivation for my work. I have particular interests in production that have accompanied my journey ever since, which I would also like to mention. Such as love for craftsmanship, hand-making, engraving, sketching, working with textile, etc. Next, I will make sure to highlight the work attitude I stand by. Meaning that I value quality over quantity, that I prefer producing alone rather than with a subcontractor, that the craft relaxes me and to me represents a sort of a meditation. The presentation will be appended by samples of my engraving work as well as bespoke designs as they were drawn up and produced. The craft of engraving has a deep and continuous tradition, its working principles, and techniques, which I will also be mentioning. www.monsportova.com STUDENT PANEL | Paige L. Morris, Bri Gluszak, Stephanie Alacon + May Chua Post Graduate Preparedness | 53 Minutes Join current GAS Student Representative Paige L. They will dive into critical elements educators and glass programs need to consider, such as professional practices in a class dedicated to the subject; formats for these professional practices; mentor/mentorship; responsiveness to the pandemic and changes to professional practices within art education; and most importantly, what would or could be best practices for a business practice pedagogy and what critical information may be missing from this aspect of art education. @paigelizbethmorris | @studio.gluszak | @nialacon | @whitehorsegrey BACK TO TOP 19
CULTURAL LECTURE | Aya Oki Glass Art which is Colored with Japanese Culture & the Aesthetic of Craft (Kogei) | 33 Minutes This lecture focuses on Japanese Culture and the Aesthetic of Craft (Kogei) which has been influencing glass art in Japan nowadays. I will also dive into the development of Japanese traditions such as Japanese clothes, comics, and poetry, as well as, Japanese glass artists, their work, and my own work as it relates to kogei. When wearing Japanese Kimonos, people must follow strict requirements in order to meet the expectations and limitations of tradition. However, it is due to these limitations and challenges that our culture grows. Similarly, poets use Haiku as a popular poetry format with focuses on the limitations set by the format. It’s under these limitations that a deeper understanding and appreciation can be found.Kogei is defined as Japanese Crafts made for functional everyday use that have practicality and aesthetic value, but it is also a practice and way of life that artisans follow in their pursuit of strong craftsmanship. I apply a Kogei approach when making glassworks. I begin with the material first and then come up with the idea. I also apply aspects of Japanese culture by restricting the material to only one focus and then developing it from there. It’s an expression of the material and myself.Since I was born and have grown up in Japan, I would like to introduce Japanese Kogei aesthetic and approach and then share examples of this approach from influential Japanese artists and also from myself with the Glass Art Society. www.aya-oki.com | @ayaokidoki STUDIO TOUR | Plasma Art Alliance Light on the Horizon | 24 Minutes An exhibition of plasma light art from artists around the globe, presented by the Plasma Art Alliance. www.plasmaartalliance.com | @plasma_art_alliance HOT DEMO | Ondřej Novotný + Zdeněk Žigo aka Grýša Bohemian Rap-Soda | 40 Minutes Novotny Glass Centre in Novy Bor includes a hot-shop studio, cold shop, museum, restaurant, gallery, and glass-making tool production. During the challenges of the pandemic, I have relied more than ever on my commitment to using secondhand, discarded, and even third-hand materials. Recycled from home remodeling projects, picture frames, the thrift store, recycling bins, industrial projects, and more; usable kiln glass can be found almost anywhere. Lastly, I’ll touch on building resilience, emotional intelligence, and GRIT to get you through to the next level of your career or transition as an artist, curator, educator, arts administrator, or entrepreneur. www.aimeesones.com | @aimeesones TECHNICAL LECMO | Mitcheal Veenstra + Catherine Wehlburg You see a pile of bricks - I see a furnace: building a simple and affordable furnace | 31 Minutes The heart of any glassblowing hotshop is the furnace. It’s also the most confusing and expensive piece for an aspiring hotshop builder to acquire. You can certainly purchase a furnace from one of many fantastic dealers – or you can build one yourself for a lot less. We see many small studios and hot shops struggling financially and this prevents overall access to the art – especially from marginalized and underrepresented peoples. This session will show the process we used to build a simple, reconfigurable, flexible, propane-powered, day-use brick furnace for less than $1000, plus the cost of your burner-train, in the hopes that we can better open the doors to glass blowing with lower BACK TO TOP 22
introductory costs. This furnace is reasonably efficient, easy to build, and easy to modify to make it fit your needs and harkens back to the early days of studio glassblowing. We’ll show the plans, the process for building, and the way that we use this furnace as well as share the story of how this came to be. Come and join us as we load in the morning, fire up, blow glass, and shut down in the afternoon! @wvglassworks LECMO | Charlotte Wilkinson Manipulation of the intangible | 33 Minutes This is a presentation based on my Ph.D. research into the application of holograms onto handmade glass objects and the effect of hot and cold processes on the holographic image. The practical aim of my research is to produce a series of objects that explore the aesthetic, decorative use of holography when applied to handmade glass objects; whilst the theoretical aim of my research is to build an analytical framework in which to situate this new work. Key areas to discuss: 1. The effect of glass on the holographic image - using the material qualities of glass to artificially alter the positioning of the holographic image. 2. Light as a tool and feature. 3. Transforming objects of novelty into objects of wonder - the development of holograms into sophisticated, contemporary glass art. Techniques to be highlighted: 1. Novel approaches to the production of holograms. 2. Combining glass and holography beyond using glass simply as the “vehicle” for the emulsion. As with most visually unstable surfaces, portraying holograms virtually faces some challenges. The artifacts that will be integral to my presentation will be incorporated as video clips and photographs to best capture and communicate the ephemeral moments of wonder. www.charlottewilkinson.co.uk | @_charlotte_wilkinson_ IDENTITY LECTURE | Emma Woffenden Who has the power to do what to whom? | 40 Minutes The lecture title is a question my work explores in relation to gender in societal, religious, and domestic settings, at the same time recognising the fluid states of masculinity and femininity and how these two merge. The feminine voice can be silenced and craft dumbed down, my projects such as Play-Fight, Cross-dressing, and Elephant Revenge explore power struggles, hierarchal dualities, and powerlessness. My work talks about ugly events using beautiful forms without glorification and I will show how this connects me to statuary and figurative sculpture in the history of art. BACK TO TOP 23
I will explain how having been trained to a high level of craft with a certain set of material values, I challenged myself to make something meaningful by doing the opposite, resisting the urge to get lost in process, how contrarily glass skills and ‘glass language’ remained central to my practice. I refer to the sociologist and philosopher Pierre Bourdieu’s idea of ‘symbolic violence’, that non-physical and unconsciously complicit violence is manifested in power differentials between social groups, that ‘the normal’ is imposed by the group with most social power, an insidious and pervasive reality not simply a gender conflict. Bourdieu’s ideas were applied to inequalities between disadvantaged, marginalised populations and the rest of the world, they reflect my unease, a feeling about power and glory within human society. During the pandemic the value of people and their roles were questioned, we imagined change, different roles, and brighter futures. www.emmawoffenden.com | @emma.woffenden BACK TO TOP 24

KILN LECMO | Lisbeth Biger The Beauty of Discarded Glass | 4:00 AM - 5:00 AM (PDT) After using recycled glass for several years, I want to celebrate the very specific beauty of this type of cast glass. The results of cast bottles or jars should not be regarded as the lesser choice, but simply as one more option. Choosing to work with recycled glass because of economic or environmental reasons can definitely be reason enough. But my interest in the material has shifted, to be primarily the beautiful marble-like structure that is so often overlooked. During this lecmo I will share how to choose the right type of recycled glass, share my experience of firing and annealing with an unknown annealing temperature, and show how to use the shape of the bottle as a design aspect in the finished piece of art. I would like to promote the option of using recycled glass, in any university-level glass program, not as the lesser choice, but as a viable alternative. @Lisbethbiger COLD DEMO | Lothar Böttcher, Michael Robert Bokrosh, Samuel Weisenborn, Patrick Roth, Tobby Ritzkowski + Simon Holm Lathe Riders: Secret Techniques from the Cold Shop | 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM (PDT) Lathe Riders is a collaborative presentation specifically focussing on the cold shop studio and cold-working techniques. The connections between techniques, people, and place are all pertinent to glass development. I grew up in country Australia, moved to Melbourne for college and transitioned to the glass scene in Seattle for 7 years, and traveled back to Australia. Through all of those places and all of the “glass travel’’ that I’ve done, BACK TO TOP 27
I’ve picked up so many techniques and tricks. I want to demonstrate a cocktail of techniques to represent the amazing multitude of experiences that I’ve had in my global journey. I’m excited to be able to be working in a studio in Melbourne, with Australian artists, demonstrating to other artists from around the world. To places that I have taken snippets of techniques to my craft. In this demonstration, I plan to sculpt a piece of glass that will be painted, brought back up to temperature, and then encased within a solid glass form. Many of my sculptures represent glass vessels as visual signifiers of the containment of cultural knowledge represented within museums. My glass provides a representation of our obsession with collecting, categorising, and preserving the world around us. This piece would represent my global journey and development as an artist. www.teganhamilton.com | @tegan.hamilton KILN LECMO | Evelyn Gottschall Baker Non-Traditional Pâte de Verre | 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM (PDT) I have experimented extensively with glass powders, developing a unique method of forming glass paste into sculptures that are fired without the use of investment molds. My experience as a Test Engineer has proved invaluable in shaping the discipline necessary for the methodical, detailed testing required to create the complex firing schedules for this method, which must account for shrinkage, varying thicknesses, and the way in which heat affects individual components. It is my pleasure to share this technique through teaching other artists, as well as through the display of completed sculptures. During this lecmo, I will demonstrate my Pâte de Verre method to create objects that are fired without the use of investment molds. I will use reusable silicone molds that are filled with glass paste and frozen, then remove the frozen positive from the mold and use a low-heat process to dry the object. Once dry, the object resembles clay “leather” which can be carved and modified to add more detail as desired. I will also discuss the kiln setup, which does not require a mold for support although materials such as fiber paper, sand, aluminum oxide, and kiln furniture can be used to provide stability to the object during the firing process. Other considerations will be presented, including challenges such as dealing with shrinkage and color maturation, as well as the importance of documentation. Several completed sculptures will be shown and discussed to enable the audience to see possibilities. www.GlassFractions.com | @GlassfractionsStudio HOT DEMO | Kenji Ito Hot Sculpting | 9:00 PM - 1:30 AM (PDT) Blown and sculpted glass animal form created at Aya Glass Studio in Kawasaki, Japan, with a team of about 4 people. www.ayaglass.o.oo7.jp | @kenji2560 BACK TO TOP 28
