WHAT IXL IS: Aligned and adaptive math and ELA content for students Couples students’ enthusiasm for technology with critical skills practice A tool that enables teachers to create and facilitate focused, differentiated instruction
GOALS 1) Review account activation and class rosters 2) Navigate site through a student’s perspective 3) Share implementation strategies (and the reports that support those strategies) 4) Assessment, questions, debrief
USING IXL: A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE Your task: 1) Select the grade level that you teach. 2) Choose a skill to practice and begin answering problems. 3) Answer some questions correctly; answer some INCORRECTLY. Be ready to discuss: What happened when you got a question correct? What happened when you answered incorrectly? What did you notice about the problems as you progressed through the skill?
QUESTION ADAPTATION
WHAT IS THE SMART SCORE? A score used for monitoring a student’s skill progress towards mastery. Calculated by the: • Number of problems completed • Number of problems correct and incorrect • Problem difficulty • Recent answers are weighed more heavily • Consistency (more correct answers in a row) is rewarded highly
SMARTSCORE: PROGRESS LEVELS Successfully completed the Challenge Zone Entering the Challenge Zone Showing confidence More confidence needed; Would benefit from brief review, modeling, collaborative practice Struggling; Reteach the skill and provide ample time for modeling, guided practice, and collaborative practice
DISCUSSION Will students’ IXL work be placed in your grade book? If you answer “yes”, WHAT will you grade and how will you score students? If you answer “no”, WHY NOT?

USING IXL AS A TOOL FOR PROVIDING DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION EIGHTY PERCENT OF DIFFERENTIATION IS MIND-SET; THE REST IS CRAFT. ~ RICK WORMELI (AUTHOR, FAIR ISN’T ALWAYS EQUAL; ASSESSMENT AND GRADING IN THE DIFFERENTIATED CLASSROOM)
DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY #1 PROVIDING SCAFFOLDING AND SUPPORT Allow student to gain confidence using a lower grade level Want to hide grade levels? Select “Hide grade levels” in the profiles & settings area.
DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY #2 PROVIDING ENRICHMENT Move skill(s) up a grade level (or two!)
ADDITIONAL REMEDIATION & ENRICHMENT IDEAS Using the Class Overview report, generate a student-specific worksheet of: Questions answered incorrectly during skill practice (remediation) OR Questions answered correctly in order to provide further writing opportunities (enrichment)
GUIDE TO CREATING STUDENT-SPECIFIC WORKSHEETS 1) Reports tab Status Update Class Overview 2) Select skill in Skills Practiced Area 3) Review student performance, select student, and select “Missed” 4) Click HIDE CORRECT ANSWERS 5) Select UPDATE REPORT 6) Select the printer icon in right corner 7) Print the worksheet. If you are creating a worksheet for enrichment purposes, follow the steps above but choose CORRECT vs. MISSED when you arrive to Step #3.
DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY #3 CREATING SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION AND/OR COLLABORATIVE GROUPS Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 CENTERS STATIONS ROTATIONS HYBRID/BLENDED LEARNING
IXL AS A HOMEWORK TOOL Assign: Free IXL app available for iPad and Android tablets • One skill • The number of questions to be completed - K-2 (5-10 questions) - 2-5 (15-20) Recommended, but not required - 6-12 (25-40) • Using the Class Overview report, review their progress the next day.
