Issue 143 Thursday 21st July 2022 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Carers, As we come to the end of another year, it is my pleasure to reflect on the students' successes over the last few terms. Not just academic success but some of the small achievements they have made. These range from tying shoelaces, asking for help, encouraging friends to play, to learning new skills, getting better at losing in games and so many more. It has been delightful to see so many friendships blossoming throughout the year and seeing so many students grow in confidence and self-esteem. All of this is only made possible by the support of parents and the expertise of our team. Thank you for all you do to support St Catherine’s. It is also the time of year where we have to say goodbye to both students and staff that are moving on to exciting new challenges. Ryan, Cameron, Jamie, Dilion, Zak and Ralph, we wish you every success with your chosen courses for next year and look forward to hearing all about your achievements. Becky, Jenny, Kayleigh B and Jackie, we wish you well in your chosen next steps and hope that your next challenge is as rewarding as your time at St Catherine’s has been. Thank you for everything you have done for both present and past students and I do hope you will join us at next year's Summer Fair to let us know how you are getting on. As we look forward to an exciting year ahead, I would like to let you know about some changes in the Senior Leadership Team, Kayleigh Sparkes has been appointed to the role of Head of Speech and Language Therapy and Jo Elliott has taken on the role of Head of Sixth Form. We will also welcome three new teachers and a couple of teaching assistants next academic year. We wish them all the best of luck in their new roles. I wish everyone a restful summer break and look forward to seeing students back at school on Monday 5th September. With best wishes, Sarah Thompson Principal “Our aim is to support and enable our children and young people to achieve more than they ever thought possible.” Registered Charity No. 288148 Company Limited by Guarantee (Number 1757474) in England and Wales. This term in ICT By Tim Harris, ICT Teacher Brook & Colwell This term we have been learning all about Multimedia Sound & Motion. We have looked at ways we can develop multimedia by adding sound and motion to our designs. We have also started to learn about touch typing where we are learning all about which finger to use to select which key on the keyboard. Finger placement is really important here and we are working hard on the basics so that we can progress to the next task in the new term. Throughout the term we have also been continuing to learn how to Sequence Code using Block Editor Code on a website called Code.org. We can access our own accounts from home if we want to practise, all we need is our school email and this will allow us to log in from anywhere we have access to the internet. Freshwater & Totland This term we have been learning all about Multimedia Sound & Motion. We have looked at ways we use multimedia and how it can be enhanced with the use of sound and motion. This has allowed us to focus on creating animations and presentations that are more appropriate for our intended audiences. Throughout the term we have also been continuing to learn how to Sequence Code using Block Editor Code on a website called Code.org. We can access our own accounts from home if we want to practise, all we need is our school email and this will allow us to log in from anywhere we have access to the internet. Orchard & Seagrove We started this term learning about sound and motion when we apply it to multimedia. In lesson we have been looking at how sound clips can be added into our animations and presentations to add a little more depth and life to our product. We have looked at ways we can edit sound to play when we want it to play and the volume it will play. We have also looked at a lot more motion options this term with transitions and animation using the features we have available in PowerPoint. We also went back over the term Copyright and to reinforce what it means and how it works. We then continued to expand our knowledge of code using Code.org, where we have been learning about nested loops and functions in the code we use. We have also been catching up with some very important touch typing using typing.com. Whitecliff We started this term learning about sound and motion in multimedia. We began by learning about the sound clips themselves and how we could use them. The sound we have used this term has been freely available in Microsoft PowerPoint. We have been adding these clips from the sound library and then adjusting how they run, at what speed and with appropriate volume control. We also continued to expand our knowledge of code using Code.org where we have been learning about loops and functions in the code we use. We have also been working on our touch typing using typing.com where we are earning how to touch type.
Osborne and Newtown This term we continued to work on our WJEC assignments, and in particular tying up any loose ends with the work we had finished ready for moderation. We also started to look at some AQA unit awards which run alongside our WJEC project work and here we have been looking at topics such as Internet Safety, using Email and using ICT. Throughout this term we have been learning how to use the software we are studying and to then fulfill the requirements of the assignment by completing set tasks. We have also continued to expand our knowledge of code using Code.org and Code Academy, both websites where we can continue to learn the benefits of code and how we could use it in the future. 6BQ This term we have been learning a variety of new key skills. We have looked at touch tying using typing.com where we are learning all about finger placement on the keyboard and why accuracy is more important than speed. We have also been continuing to create code using code.org and making real progress with our hour of code sessions. We have also been working through some task based work looking at spreadsheets. Here we looked at data that predicted whether or not we were eating a good breakfast. We used information we obtained online about nutritional values of food we eat and then entered this into our spreadsheet to allow us to create some questions about the food we choose to use. We then used some formulae we had learnt to manipulate the data in the spreadsheet that would then create our answers. 6JE This term we have been working on a variety of different AQA unit awards. Thus far we have looked at uses of ICT, Using Email & Internet Security. With all three of these units we have worked through the scenarios provided by the exam board and learnt how to manipulate the software needed for the task before producing the evidence to submit for moderation. We have also continued to build up our knowledge of code using Code.org. Here we looked at a variety strategies and functions to move an avatar around a screen under our command. 6MH This term we have again been working on our Being Organised project. In this project we have been putting into practice all that we have learnt about time management, using planners and alarms to complete a selection of set tasks created by the exam board. This will provide the evidence we need to show we are being organised and allow us to get our award. ...................................................................................................................... Newtown Class We can't believe it's our final week at school!! It's been very hot so we have done our best to keep cool. We enjoyed a final outing together on Tuesday visiting Level Land Farm in Brading. We had an awesome time, we filled up the pigs mud wallow and watched as they enjoyed sloshing around in it and then we fed and petted the goats. All of us had a favourite thing, Shannon said she enjoyed sitting quietly in the shade while the lambs came up for a stroke. Elliot loved being chased by the friendly goats. Ryan thought feeding the pigs and goats was amazing. Jerome enjoyed hanging out with the pigs. He found it really funny when they sniffed his legs with their muddy noses! Connor enjoyed making friends with the pigs and Marty's favourite thing was feeding cabbage to the goats. We finished the day with an ice cream at Crave! Delicious! ...................................................................................................................... They raised £39.30 from their cake sale for Comic Relief and have also raised £64.50 for St Catherines'. They decided to spend this on a Snake and Ladders and Drafts picnic table top game! A huge well done to you all!

Ella had great fun meeting the cheeky ring-tailed lemur. Toby loved seeing the meerkats shouting for their food. Mykee thought the flamingo was really funny. We found out he was hand reared and was dancing around, banging the window because he was acting like a human. Spike liked seeing the snakes and feeding the wallabies. Ben loved having the ring-tailed lemur sit on his shoulder. Seb liked seeing the ringed-tail lemur trying to eat all our feet. We learnt they did this because they like salt and some of us had been on the beach and the sea. ...................................................................................................................... Therapy at St Catherine's Communication Friendly Setting Award This year St Catherine’s has been working towards achieving their communication friendly setting award. This award is run by ELKLAN, a speech and language trainer which offers courses and accreditation across the country. A team of three teachers have been delivering communication friendly training to all staff at the school including admin, maintenance and kitchen! Once the training was complete, an independent auditor came to look around the school site and observe some lessons. This audit will go towards the final award. A quote from our auditor: "This is a truly Communication Friendly setting! Thank you for my visit - so many examples of guaranteeing that language and life is accessible to all the pupils and that there are appropriate supports for ensuring all the pupils can communicate and are very happy to do so!" The final pieces of evidence are being collected and we hope to apply for our award shortly.
Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy Research Champion Day The Speech Therapy team presented a piece of research at a recent online research champion event. This involved sharing an academic poster via Zoom to other speech therapy research champions around the country. The work focused on the use of the allotment at the Sixth Form and the impact this has had on language and social communication development in Sixth Form students. The response was overwhelming and the team have now had offers from professionals within the research sector to help support further publication of this work. We hope to continue this work in next year and look to share our work with others. Duke of Edinburgh Award Two former students, Jack and Edward, received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Buckingham Palace on Friday 20th May 2022. This is a fantastic achievement and was only possible through their hard work, commitment and resilience. You should be very proud of yourselves...we are here at St Catherine's! From Jack I had my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Presentation/celebration at Buckingham Palace Gardens. It was very, very wet. I met up with Edward who was with me when I completed the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. If I didn’t start going to St Catherine’s school in September 2013 then I would never have completed the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I’m incredibly very happy, thankful and proud to everyone from St Catherine’s school and the Isle of Wight college for all of their help.
What has Post-19 been up to? By Post-19 Staff and Students The staff team all can’t believe it’s the end of another academic year for Post-19 students, and when we look back over the year at what the students have achieved we couldn’t be prouder. Individually you have all worked so hard on your life skills and independence, and this can be seen in your cooking skills, travel, personal organisation, completing house jobs, friendships and much more. We have been lucky to end the academic year with some planned activities, which have included Go- Karting, paddle boarding, kayaking, cinema, a trip to the Snacks & Ladders café and the aqua park at Tapnell Farm. We finished the year with a BBQ in Trinity View garden, where we all got together, and students were presented with a certificate and gift from Lisa, Post-19 Registered Manager, to acknowledge their achievements. Enjoy your summer holidays and we are all looking forward to seeing you in September, to see what the next academic year will bring.
Well done to Nick and George! A very big well done to Nick and George who have received awards from the Isle of Wight College. Nick received a High Level of Participation award and an award for Outstanding Achievement and use of College resources, and George received an award for Outstanding Contribution to the Workplace.
