Issue 2.2, 11 May, 2021. Principal’s Report It may only be four days that I have sat in Mrs Kirby’s chair, but there has definitely been a lot jammed in to this small amount of time. I have had the opportunity to witness NAPLAN testing, excursions for three year levels, volleyball training, breakfast club, seen your new HPV bikes and some incredible activities both inside and outside the classroom. Congratulations to the students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 for your participation in NAPLAN this week. It was evident that students were well prepared for these tests and the online platform was very successful. I have been extremely impressed with the mature and positive attitude that you have approached each of the assessments this week. I wish you all the best for the days that remain in the schedule, and look forward to hearing how you perform in the near future. My normal role of Head of Senior School at Hervey Bay State High School has me working with Year 11 and 12 students in the final stages of their schooling, so this week has been a big change, being able to experience everything that happens prior to that stage. Prep classrooms are certainly something that is foreign to me, and at the same time, are some of the highlights that I will take away from my brief visit to the school. I know they definitely enjoyed their excursion on Wednesday morning and based on the level of activity I witnessed, I am sure they slept well that night. I would like to thank all of the staff and students (and those parents I had the chance to speak to), for welcoming me into the school so eagerly. It has been a great experience at a great school. You should all be very proud of your achievements and excited by the opportunities that are still in front of you. Regards Rob Burke | Head of School - Senior Hervey Bay State High School

There was great excitement and energy as the Year Six class from Tin Can Bay prepared to embark on a hike through the National Park. Persistent showers did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hiking party as they set off from Carlo Sand Blow. The students walked 14km on the first day as they hiked towards Freshwater camping ground, with the highlight being 4wd transport along the beach for the final leg of their journey. Upon arrival at the camp grounds everyone busied themselves with preparing the camp, erecting tents and bedding as a full and beautiful moon up crept over the sea. After eating, the students walked down to the beach to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the deserted beach, lit by the stunning full moon that reflected across the ocean. Sunrise the next day, saw the students packing up camp and beginning preparations for the 9km hike that was ahead of them. Blisters were wrapped, soreness rubbed out, and with a little less enthusiasm, the hiking party departed for home. Once the group reached the serenity and coolness of the rainforest, spirits and the pace picked up as students hiked past Poona Lake and into the pick-up area at Bymien Park. The class enjoyed the camp immensely as they learnt how to work together through adversity, pain and exhaustion.
PREP FORESHORE EXCURSION What a wonderful morning Prep had observing and exploring our local foreshore and park. We collected many materials from the environment to add to our amazing sandcastles that we created. Memories made and heaps of fun had by all. P and C POPPER FUNDRAISING A huge thank you to Chappy Karen and the Breakfast Club team for the popper donations. In Term 1 a total of $70 was raised for the P&C. In week 5 we will commence our class collections of 10c recyclables. TUCKSHOP Just a reminder that tuckshop is on Fridays. Keep a watch on Facebook for weekly announcements and deals. MEETING P&C meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of every month in the administration building starting at 4pm. The next meeting is 17 May. Chappy Chat Hi All, Breakfast Club: Continues each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 – 8am. We are hoping to start having warm milo in the coming weeks as the weather starts to cool down. All students are welcome. Lunchtime Connect: I hope all our mums had a lovely Mother’s Day on Sunday. Last week students who came to Lunchtime Connect made presents for their mums/grandmas/carers. Lunchtime Connect is held in M1.6 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at both breaks and is a space for students to hang out, do craft or play games. Garden Club: We started garden club again on Monday! The students planted strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, silver beet, basil and carrots in the fresh garden beds. Garden Club meets at the library at 7:45am on Monday mornings. We have more planting to do so I hope to see you there. We are looking to make some vegetable and herb signs for our garden from the lids of milo or coffee cans. If you have any of these over the coming weeks they would be greatly appreciated. They may be dropped at the office. I am available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please leave your contact details with Administration Office or email me at karenv@chappy.org.au.
Anxiety and Fears in Children When to be concerned about anxiety in children Most children have fears or worries of some kind. But if you’re concerned about your child’s fears, worries or anxiety, it’s a good idea to seek professional help. You might consider seeing your GP or another health professional if: • your child’s anxiety is stopping him from doing things he wants to do or interfering with his friendships, schoolwork or family life • your child’s behaviour is very different from children the same age – for example, it’s common for most children to have separation fears when going to preschool for the first time, but far less common over the age of eight years • your child’s reactions seem unusually severe – for example, your child might show extreme distress or be very hard to settle when you leave him. Severe anxiety can impact on children’s health and happiness. Some anxious children will grow out of their fears, but others will keep having trouble with anxiety unless they get professional help. https://raisingchildren.net.au Till next time Chappy Karen
