Pride Month is an opportunity to recognise and
celebrate the influence LGBTQ+ people have had
around the world.

Over the last 30 years, the Pride movement, alongside several
other organisations, has helped create transformative change
in the lives of LGBTQ+ people in the UK. Today the LGBTQ+
community have equal rights to love, marry and have children.
Their lives, families and relationships are now represented as
part of the national curriculum in most of the UK.

Despite the progress the UK has made to strive for equality,
research and evidence continues to suggest that LGBTQ+ people
still face discrimination, bullying and harassment in education and
at work. The Pride movement aims to continue raising awareness,
improving the attitudes of society, and encouraging equal rights
and inclusiveness for everyone.

• A survey from CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development,
found that four in ten LGB+ employees, and over five in ten trans employees,
had experienced a form of workplace conflict in the past year.

• LGBT+ employees often experience lower levels of psychological safety,
wellbeing and job satisfaction, as well as poorer workplace relationships,
  than their heterosexual counterparts.

• However, research shows that when LGBT+ employees perceive their
co-workers and line manager as supportive and concerned with
their wellbeing, they are more likely to be satisfied, both with their
work and their life in general.

• In another survey carried out by the Government Equalities Office,
23% of respondents had experienced a negative or mixed reaction
from others in the workplace due to being LGBT+.

• At least two in five respondents had experienced an incident because
they were LGBT+, such as verbal harassment or physical violence,
in the 12 months preceding the survey.

However, we can all make a difference. Pro-actively embedding
a range of supportive policies and practices, such as diversity
training and antidiscrimination policies, alongside building
inclusive cultures, is positively linked to increased productivity
and performance of all employees. Ultimately, it makes us better,
and more responsible, places to work.

Did you know?

  • The symbol for Pride is a rainbow flag, it was designed by artist and gay rights
    activist Gilbert Baker in 1978

  • Pride is celebrated in the month of June, as that was the month when the
Stonewall riots took place. The Stonewall riots were important protests that
took place in 1969 in the US, that changed gay rights for a lot of people in
    America and around the world.

  • The first Pride march took place in New York City on June 28 1970, a year on
from the riots. UK activists involved in the US Pride came back to Britain to
form their own organisations and start a British movement.

  • In 1972, 50 years ago this summer, the first Pride march was held in the UK.
Hundreds of LGBTQ+ people and their allies descended upon London to protest
the deep-rooted discrimination and mistreatment that LGBTQ+ people faced in
British society. Their actions that day paved the way for half a century of
progressive societal change for LGBTQ+ people.

  • Originally called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, the suggestion
to call the movement ‘Pride’ came from L. Craig Schoonmaker who in 2015 said:

“A lot of people were very repressed, they were conflicted internally, and didn’t
know how to come out and be proud. That’s how the movement was most
useful, because they thought, ‘Maybe I should be proud’.”
