Editorial
“ Since Rocalia 2017, practically every sector of the French natural stone business—
building, decoration, urban and landscaping developments—is booming. The morale of
French professionals is high and Rocalia 2019 has come at just the right time to confirm
this upturn.
This second edition has attracted more suppliers, due to the strong mobilization of the French
natural stone sector and newcomers from other countries.
Rocalia 2017 was hallmarked by a renewal of a federative spirit in the sector. Rocalia 2019
confirms this trend with strong positioning for ornamental rocks in construction and decoration.
Rocalia is the only Trade Show in the world dedicated to natural materials only.
This new awareness reinforces the sense of membership of a sector which affirms its strengths –
environmental quality, sustainability, a commitment to passing on know-how and demonstrating
its technologies and the architectural quality of its products.
Rocalia highlights every aspect of the natural stone business through the companies present
but also by the full program of events built around thematic exhibitions, demonstrations,
conferences, prize and diploma award ceremonies and the Heritage Day featuring a guided tour
of the Grand Hôtel Dieu in Lyon.
All visitors should see the Forum, a unique “stereotomic” space designed by Italian architect
Giuseppe Fallacara.

Light made from granite and molten glass. The CHAOS light is inspired by the
natural heritage of the Sidobre region. The erosion of this rock layer makes it
possible to see clusters of the atypical granite balls which characterize this
unique landscape.
The light interprets this principle of natural rock formation, known as CHAOS,
as a functional object. The base of the light is made from two blocks of granite:
the first acts as a pillar which gives the object verticality, the second integrates
the lighting system and supports the glass.
The molten glass technique makes it possible to compose complex motives
within the glass. Grains of coloured glasses fuse with the quartz, mica and
feldspar components of the Sidobre granite. As light passes through, these glass
blocks evoke the formation of the granite, like magma in fusion.

HORIZON SIDOBRE
HORIZON SIDOBRE is a work, part of a collection of lights inviting us to travel
through the heart of the Sidobre highlands. The sober and geometrical aspect of
the stones is contrasted by a snatch of matter, giving life to the light. Created by the
cracks left by the rock, each light is unique.
A copper sheet to which the light clings accompanies the stone.

BENCH
Molière sandstone and oak (assembly: magnets and leather)
Three cylinders form a base: one is cut into two, the two others are used to support
and connect. Two bases connected by an oak plank form a bench. Here the veined
Molière sandstone, patterned like wood, creates graphics made up of continuities
and ruptures.
This bench is like a building set. A real architecture propelling the glance along the
curves and edges, the solids and gaps.
Innovation is omnipresent, in particular for the “number zero” of this limited series
for which the bench was designed in kit form to facilitate transport and easy
assembly by magnets set into the stone.

Collection: Revolving Rocks articulated furniture concept.
The Marbrerie Provençale, a member of the Marbriers Façonniers de France guild,
invites Rocalia visitors to try out its new furniture concept.
The solid stone seats are movable and can be oriented by users to match the context,
indoors or out.
The bench features two stone cushions, the dynamic shapes of which invite users to
rotate them. Users can sit side by side to enjoy a meal – and just as easily sit back to
back.
In a public space, this object can encourage the users of the city to mingle while
respecting individual privacy.

GEO, VASES
A collection of unique vases associating blown glass with natural rocks.
Each vase in the Geo collection is unique, the engraved decorations reflect the type
of mineral used. The stones are extracted from the same ground to guarantee the
cohesion of each mineral. Engraving and glass cutting techniques join forces with the
know-how of monumental masons to enable transfers of technology between the two
trades: for example graver-cutting for the “glare” series, a new use of stonecutters’
tools on glass. In the “teeth” and “crystal” series the glass-makers’ diamond grinding
stones make it possible to use new formal principles to sublimate the rocks.

Molière Sandstone and oak (assembly: magnets and leather)
Completely upcycled from unused resources: pre-extracted marbles or granites, down-times on machines, available know-how, surplus
consumables… its carbon foot-print is very small. Composed of 3 elements, assembly is simple and tool-free. To reduce its ecological impact,
units are stored and dispatched flat.
NeoTable is perfect for a settee end or as a coffee or bedside table… Different styles can be created by combining rocks, colours and varied
textures for the 3 elements. The feet splay out from the table top or more simply are set level with it to add character. Depending on the
resources available dimensions can vary but the volume is always harmonious.

Table in laminated rock-glass
The “Pertubations” table is inspired by meteorology and observation of the sky.
The table top is composed of grey rocks evoking clouds. The laminated rock-glass
feet represent sun rays crossing the clouds. Like the natural phenomenon, the glass
acts as an optical fibre guiding the light which strikes the top in the feet.
From a technical point of view, the design of this table system extends the limits of
Maison Dérudet laminated rock. The association of natural rocks with very thick
crafted enamelled glass is quite rare. Last but not least, the volume of the assembly
of the different parts of the table creates a new formal laminated rock vocabulary.

Rocalia Design Expo CORNER
THE MINEROPODES
This coffee table is based on the mineropodes family. It is the result of the
desire to contrast force and finesse – the same contrast which characterizes the
exoskeletons of many insects. The strength of its stone structure, able to support
a thick glass top, contrasts with the finesse of its feet which, thanks to new stone-
working technologies are only a few millimetres thick.

The BROCATELLE company specializes in the transformation of
natural materials.
From quarries all over the world these materials express an infinity of elegant,
classic, minimalist, refined
and contemporary decorative visions. To apprehend, understand and
animate matter requires gestural control and sensitivity. For Rocalia 2019,
and especially for Rocalia Design Exhibition, BROCATELLE has worked with
a creative artist from Lyon to design and produce a work in natural stone.

LITHIC FABRIC
« TESSUTO LITICO »
Lithic Fabric is composed of geometrical marble squares connected
together by a steel network.
The idea is to be able “to cover” any complex-shaped building with
marble, like ivy. The marble squares become leaves to shade major
zones in buildings from the sun.

Rocalia 2019THE “BUILDING IN NATURAL STONE
IN THE 21ST CENTURY” CONTEST
Organized by the SNROC and Pierre Actual magazine, the “Building in natural stone in the 21st century” contest gives prizes
for recent works carried out in France using limestone, marble, lava, granite, sandstone or slate either quarried or worked in
France.
Prizes are awarded in three categories: buildings (individual or collective), urban development/infrastructures and other
sites (interior decoration, landscaping, restoration…). A Special Prize is awarded to the work that observes most closely
environmental and sustainable development criteria. The Grand Prix rewards the project that best represents stone
construction in the 21st century.
The awards ceremony will take place at 5.30 pm on 3rd December at the Rocalia Forum

À l’origine, deux petites maisons séparées par une venelle partagent un petit terrain CARRIERES DU BUGEY

depuis la rue du pressoir, (côté Ouest) et par un passage à talon public sur la façade
Est. Deux grandes familles habitaient là, peut-être jusque dans les années 1950. SCOP BOIS LOGIC

Chacune des deux maisons était composée de deux pièces : à rez-de-chaussée
de la première au Nord, était la chèvrerie. À l’étage, la pièce de vie équipée était
seulement d’une cheminée et d’une pierre d’évier. La maison du Sud, quasiment
identique à la première, était accessible depuis le passage à talon à l’Est. Le rez- MATERIAL

de-chaussée servait de remise. Plus tard, la venelle est fermée pour agrandir la

La géométrie des murs existants (cf. plans ci-dessus) négocie avec le «bon sol»

PUBLIC EQUIPMENT/ DEVELOPMENT
Entre deux rives et prolongeant la Mairie, le projet constitue le lien entre les deux
parties de la municipalité. Les piliers monolithiques en pierre structurelle portent COQUAZ ET BÉAL
le projet d’une rive à l’autre de la rivière Azergues. Cette halle représente le
nouveau patrimoine de la commune, mais elle donne aussi l’impression d’avoir
toujours été là.

Les piliers de plus de 3,50 m de hauteur permettent de préserver une vue MATERIAL
panoramique sur l’environnement proche. Leur solidité (cette pierre régionale est

l’une des plus dures au monde !) assurera la pérennité de la halle. Les tuiles de
verre viennent éclairer le centre de la halle, en sa partie la plus haute, et sont un

rappel de la rivière qui coule dans le sens du faîtage.

Ici comme dans les halles traditionnelles, le bois et la pierre jouent tous les rôles :

éléments porteurs en pierre calcaire de Villebois, structure en bois Douglas de la
région et couverture en tuiles plates également en pierre de Villebois et en verre.
Ce que nous proposons aussi à Lamure-sur-Azergues, est un projet manifeste,

un projet ancré dans le lieu par la provenance de ses matériaux et la sobriété
des formes employées.
La halle et la pergola offrent une présence douce et calme dans le village, grâce à
leurs proportions en harmonie avec les volumes existants alentours, et à l’expression
constructive de la matière, une matière noble, durable et locale.
