THE CLIPPED WINGS OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE AIR DISPATCH ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA Summer 2020/2021 President’s Report Hello everyone. Summer, please let us not have another one like the previous one. This year has been a wild ride, to say the least. Our functions, events and achievements this year can almost be counted on one hand and we are still unsure of what to expect in the near future. The future of the association and the International Reunions is also somewhat unclear. The association is still progressing albeit very slowly. Our membership stands at about 180 and we are in the black, financially with our Admin and Fund-raising Accounts looking reasonably healthy. We did have a couple of Bunnings BBQ’s arranged in June/July, but they were cancelled due to a spike in COVID cases. That said, Bunnings have now come back on-line, and Grant Foster and the Penrith team have organised two BBQ’s in November, which should further boost our coffers. Our merchandise is well stocked and ready for a Christmas buying frenzy, leaving our Grants Account on the bleak side as DVA Grants are being controlled by a separate organisation called “The Grants Hub” and they seem not to be as generous as DVA was in previous years. Apart from COVID, this is another reason we have been unable to provide bus trips and the like as we have been rejected on more than one occasion for grants. Although membership is still reasonably healthy, we have a major problem recruiting new members. This is not just come about but has been an ongoing issue for previous committees as well as our overseas affiliate groups, NZ, US and UK. We have found, young soldiers, prefer to socialise with their peer groups and we only see some of them at the Myola Ball and presentation parades. Historically, its not till people reach their late forties and fifties that they start to think about joining the association and in this day and age, given the size of Australia and the social distractions available, our association is well down the list in peoples thoughts. This leads me to the future of International Reunions. Our next forecast International Reunion is supposed to be hosted by the US in 2022. At this point in time, nothing has been planned and I have not had any communication from the Red Hat Chapter regarding the next one, which is usually held over the Summer 2020/2021
THE CLIPPED WINGS President’s Report Cont. August/September period. We normally have a two-year period in which to plan and save for these reunions as they are normally announced at the closure of the previous reunion. That did not occur this year. Between COVID and the recent US elections it is also still unclear on the stability of the US in general. This is now a waiting game. If the International Reunions fall over, we endeavour to remain proactive and we expect to conduct our own national and international trips, venturing to places of interest and keeping our association active, with or without our international affiliate groups. We are sailing in unchartered waters at this stage and we are watching and waiting before we make too many firm commitments and plans. What we do have tentatively planned is as follows: a. 5 December 20, the end of year function at O’Donoghues, Emu Plains, b. 6 February 21, Casual Dining-In Night at Oberon RSL, c. 13 – 20 February 21, Get together at Big 4 Caravan Park, Nambucca Heads, d. 25 April 21, ANZAC Day, Penrith, e. 7 August 21, Myola ball, and f. Bunnings BBQ’s on an ad-hoc basis Let’s hope this all comes off without any problems or disruptions Finally, the last twelve months have seen quite a few member and non-member Air Dispatchers pass away. Although they have been recognised and tributes paid to them in the Vale section of our newsletter, because of the large number, I feel it appropriate to mention them by name Benny Manning, Alan Braid, Dave Cooper, Ken Smyth, Graeme O’Brien, Chris Felkin, Bernard Birtles, Peter Blyth, and Dennis Lee. We also lost Janet (Kiwi) Lieben, wife of Gerry Lieben after the International reunion as a direct result of COVID -19. I don’t think we have ever lost 10 people in a twelve-month period before. Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with the family members. Let us hope 2021 will not be as difficult as 2020, a year that left an indelible mark on many of us. On behalf of our committee, “Thank You” for sticking with us over this difficult time. I would like to thank all members of the committee and the State reps who have done a tremendous job over the period. Joyce and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a successful and prosperous New Year Please stay safe Until next time Cheers Nicko December 2020 Summer 2020/2021
THE CLIPPED WINGS Patron’s Christmas Message 2020 has been far from a normal year for the Association and its members. COVID has had a deep and personal impact, with a number of our members contracting the virus and Janet (Kiwi) Lieben, Gerry Lieben’s wife, losing her life to the virus. It also impacted the direct support the Association offers many of you through dinners and other social events, the simple luxury of being able to meet face to face, relied on by so many, was lost. The unpredictable nature of the virus means the immediate future for many is uncertain, making it hard to predict if 2021 will be a better year for you, your loved ones, and the Association. I remain optimistic. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the leadership provided by the Association’s President, Nick Nicolai, his lovely wife Joyce, and your committee. It is generally pretty easy to be a leader during the good times, however it is during the most difficult periods where genuine leaders stand up. The leadership provided by Nicko and the committee during the immediate crisis surrounding the international reunion, and the weeks and months following deserves recognition. We have been led with compassion, empathy, sincerity, and a commitment to support those most in need. This comes with significant personal impact, however that sense of service to others, which characterises the Air Dispatch ethos was consistently on display. They don’t do what they do for recognition, but I would offer my heartfelt thanks for a job well done. As I highlighted last year, they are well supported by you the members. The experiences of 2020 reinforce that, I strongly encourage you to continue that support, in whatever way you can. The reality is the simple things make a difference, a phone call, text, card, or letter brings genuine relief and reassures us that we belong. The links provided by you and the Association bring comfort during difficult periods, provide a sense of certainty, and assist as we transition to whatever it is that comes next. I encourage you to keep those links open. The committee continues to look for opportunities to bring you together. Nicko provides some planned dates in the President’s Report, hopefully you will be able to mark them in your calendar and the circumstances are such that they continue as planned. I have spoken previously of the need to establish a closer relationship with those that are currently serving, and this is best achieved by demonstrating exactly why it is the Association was established. 2020 has provided no better example of why it is the Association exists. The Association will continue to look at initiatives to engage the next generation, it is critical to our long-term sustainability. That direct connection between those that are serving and those that have served remains important, it helps us all understand we are part of something bigger and that service comes before self. Once again, can I ask you to continue to look after each other. The Association exists for its members and the events of 2020 confirms the need for organisations such as ours. Karen and I wish you a merry Christmas and a much happier 2021. Kind Regards Brigadier Mick Ashleigh, AM Patron Summer 2020/2021
