FALL 2021 www.cedarlakecc.com THE BLURB Official Newsletter of the Cedar Lake Community Club PHOTO BY JON SABEL IN THIS ISSUE President's Letter by Michele Watson LETTER FROM THE CLCC PRESIDENT Dear Cedar Lakers, Another summer has whipped by and now we find HUB LAKES SPORTS ourselves in October, enjoying the last few warm days before the leaves change and the air gets crisp. As much as we love summer, autumn is always beautiful at Cedar Lake. The CLCC officially wrapped CLLA PRESIDENT'S up the summer season on September 11th by UPDATE celebrating at CedarFest. Thanks to everyone who attended, we had an absolutely gorgeous day and it was a lot of fun. It pains me to say that the West side dominated the tug of war, winning both the kid and FALL BIRTHDAYS & adult contests. Despite the genetically modified eggs ANNIVERSARIES that just don’t break like they used to, we finally had a winning team just as it started to get really dark. Congratulations to Jamie and Gretchen Forman, winners of the adult egg toss contest, and sisters CLASSIFIEDS Mariella and Hannah, winners of the kids contest. (continued on next page)
FALL 2021 www.cedarlakecc.com (continued from previous page) Putting on an event like CedarFest requires a tremendous amount of work. Thank you to those who volunteered to pitch in to help, we really appreciate it. There are a few who really work their buns off and I want to especially thank Bob Vidal, Susan Ulversoy, and Lynn Eggert for the countless hours they put in, PHOTO BY JON SABEL planning, tracking, preparing, and serving. The rest of the CLCC board also contributed so much - thank you all! Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the fun is! Although we are still paying attention to potential changes to COVID protocols, we have some fun things planned for the fall and winter. Remember the bar is open on Friday nights so come on down for a beer or cocktail! We are also planning an Oktoberfest to coincide with the CLLA pumpkin carving. The CLLA has an update on their plans, and it’s time to start thinking about the photo contest! I always look forward to the photos our neighbors post on the Cedar Lake Facebook group – the full moons, the gorgeous sunsets, beautiful sunrises, and the sparkling lake waters. The CLCC will hold our photo contest again this year so watch your email inbox, the bulletin boards, and Facebook for how to submit your photos. We are planning to return to the gallery show format for displaying the photos and voting for the winners this year, so mark your calendar for Saturday, November 20th, to attend the gallery show. For those who have not bought a brick yet, our engraved brick fundraising program is still open! Buy a brick for your family, memorialize a loved one, or declare your Cedar Lake pride! It’s easy! Do it now here: https://cedarlakecc.com/2020/clcc-brick-sale. Stay in touch, and keep checking your email, the community bulletin boards, and our FB groups. Enjoy the fall weather, and stay safe and healthy! All the best, Michele Watson CLCC President
Hub Lakes Sports by Mike Fallon As we enter the final stretch for Hub Lakes Sports, Cedar Lake had another fine year. As of this writing, Men’s Softball is still competing and will complete in early October. This spring, the Darts team, led by Dave Luer, in typical fashion, struggled through the regular season to make the playoffs. The team defeated White Meadow Lake, Rainbow Lakes and then Lake Parsippany for the championship in enemy territory. It is their third straight Hub Lakes Championship. The darts team is Ron Vogt, Alvin Walters, Mike Fallon, Jeff Doyle, Daniel Jackson, Chris Jackson, Greg Schultz, Ellen Nowicky, and Kim Luer. The Women’s Horseshoes team had a great year coming in third place overall. Led by Lisa Doyle, the team is Barbara Vidal, Corrine Norton, Danielle Lang, Ellen Nowicky, Karin Jackson, Laurie Einstein, Lynn Eggert, Michele Watson, Nancy Meade, and Susan Ulversoy. They don’t have any cool nicknames like the men’s team, but they’re still cool. The Cedar Lake Men’s Golf team, led by Josh Briggs, participated in the one- day tournament. This year, the team's foursome was Jack Fields, John Obeid, Alvin Walters, and Josh Briggs. They came in last place, but had a great time representing Cedar Lake on a beautiful day. After a 25 year drought which ended last year, the Men's Horseshoes team are Hub Lakes Champions two years running. After finishing 2nd by defeating Indian Lake on the last night of the regular season to earn a bye and wait for the semi-finals, Cedar made quick work of a good White Meadow team. Winning 7-1, they earned a spot in the finals against Lake Arrowhead. Lake Arrowhead had dominated the league all season, winning over 90 games. In the finals, Cedar jumped out to a 6-1 lead, needing just one more win to close out Arrowhead. But Arrowhead came back strong, winning the next 4 matches in a row. It was now 6-5 with the last match still being played. A loss by Cedar would mean a 1-game playoff match. The last match was tight, with no team or player dominating. Ringers were hard to come by or canceled out when made. Gary Petrillo and Greg Schultz tried closing it out. The match was tied 15-15. Gary, pitching first, put on a double ringer, putting the (continued on next page)

Congratulations to a great bunch of guys and a great team to be a part of: Adam "I'll Be Back" Burmil, Chris "Mariano" Jackson, John "The Crease" Forbes, Ron "Ice Man" Vogt, Dave "The New Guy" Luer, Phil "Night Owl" Ulversoy, Greg "No Practice" Schultz, and Gary "The Captain" Petrillo. Cedar Women’s Softball, led by Cori Eggert, finished in 2nd place this year. The following ladies were part of the talented lineup: Janis Nixon, Faith Zimmerman, Hope Zimmerman, Sarah Vanderhoof (MVP), Mary Griffin, Hayley Gibbons, Hannah Whitmore, Cori Eggert, Beverly Eggert, Nancy Meade, Danielle Lang, Victoria Lang, Meg Olenowski, Lydia Kasper, Carrine Mackey, Lea Mackey, Abby Mackey. The team was supported by the best fans/bookkeepers, Sean Mackey and Lynn Eggert. The highlight game of the season was against Rainbow where every player had a hit leading to a 13-1 victory. Through the end of the regular season. Cedar Men's Softball has had a tough season going 1-11, but have steadily improved through the season and hope to make some noise in the playoffs. Team members include Charles Halpin, Steve Bottarelli, Dustin Steiner, Chuck Femminella, John Marconi, Brian Klug, Elias Mascobi, Ryan Sheridan, Jake Sheridan, Zach Sheridan, and Ian Kennedy, Scott Frees, Chris Carmagnola, Gabe DeMarco, and Ken Doolittle. The Cedar Lake Swim & Dive team had one of their best season in years, including two dual swim meet wins against Rock Ridge and PIRATE. At the Hub Lakes Swim Championships, the top point getters were Kieran Gibbons for girls and Adam Margeson for boys. Additionally, our women’s 35 & over team took the championship! Go Cedar! Coach Katie and Assistant Coach Tyler want to thank everyone for a great 2021 summer season! At the Hub Lakes Dive Championships, Parker Smith, Adam Margeson, and Kiera Brennan all took first place in their age groups. (continued on next page)
(continued from previous page) Anyone interested in joining for 2022 should reach out to Amy Standish or John Smith. We're looking forward to another great season of swimming and diving next year! For the first time ever, cornhole will be added as a sport this year on a trial basis. The season will last many weeks with matches home and away starting this fall. Please contact Ron Vogt at ronvogt@aol.com if you are interested in playing. With the addition of cornhole, the Hub Lakes Sports League is now active year round. All CLCC members are eligible to come on out and play. A special thank you to all of our coaches for volunteering their time, the players for all of their hard work, and of course the fans for their support. FALL 2021 www.cedarlakecc.com CLLA President's Update by Sandy Fields Fall has arrived and change is in the air! The wind blows a little crisper in the mornings, the leaves have begun to change from green to golden hues and our local squirrels are skittering around grabbing up all those acorns tripping us up on our walk out to the car in the morning. The CLLA is not immune to change. We are so excited to announce our name has changed! As many of you have heard, our organization has voted to change the name of the CLLA from the Cedar Lake Ladies Auxiliary to Cedar Lake Lakeside Activities. We were glad we were able to retain the same acronym and therefore provide some continuity with the long history of the CLLA. However, as times change, we felt the need to make the organization more inclusive and accessible to our Cedar Lake residents. We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who voted and supported the Executive Board of the CLLA throughout this process. We are excited to plan new fun events under this new moniker. Let’s have quick look back on another beautiful summer season before we leave it in the rearview. Elsewhere in the Blurb, you’ll see a full write-up on another successful Cedar Lake Day. We were so happy to bring this tradition back in all its glory this year and a huge thank you goes out to all who helped make this day a success! A special shout-out to Heather Einstein and Tricia Margeson, who held the lion’s share of the activities as well as the Community Club for taking care of the picnic portion. We also held our annual Scavenger Hunt and Boat Regatta this year with lots of kiddos grabbing some goodies for their backpacks and a few boats dressing up to ensure this tradition stays alive. It isn’t always easy making last minutes decisions to ensure the health and safety of our participants during a global pandemic and we were sad that we were unable to do the ice cream on the beach this year. Please understand we are all doing our best among the circumstances and will continue to try to bring the best events to the lake for our children while also keeping them as safe as we possibly can. Keep an eye out on the Facebook page and to the sign boards for announcements on our coming fall events. We’ll be holding our Pumpkin Carving outdoors in the parking lot again (weather permitting) on October 24th. We are hoping to add a new mini pumpkin patch this year for our littler participants to get in on some of the pumpkin-y action! We also plan to bring back our Trunk-or-Treat to the clubhouse on Halloween, October 31st. Please start planning on your creative trunk designs. I can not wait to see what you all will come up with this year! (continued on next page)
FALL 2021 www.cedarlakecc.com (continued from previous page) As always we still have tons of wonderful merchandise for you to purchase to show your Cedar Lake pride. Please reach out to Korinne Petrillo or email the CLLA at clla@cedarlakecc.com to inquire. We will have a booth out at the pumpkin carving if you want to stop by and pick up some swag! Thanks again for a wonderful summer season and looking forward to seeing more of you! With pumpkin spice and everything nice, Sandy Fields CLLA President Cedar Lake Day Recap by Heather Einstein Our annual Cedar Lake Day was held on Saturday, July 17th this year. We had a great turn out with over 50 kids participating in the water games and events, run by the CLLA! Games and events included a candy hunt, duck races across the fish pit, lane races, swim across the cove, swim across the lake, and back by popular demand – the family relay! Special congrats to the Margeson family who won the family relay! They are the team to beat for next year. Everyone did a great job! After the water games, everyone headed over to the clubhouse where the CLCC provided quite the BBQ spread with burgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob! Neighbors brought plenty of salads and sides. The CLLA did some baking and provided lots of yummy treats! As in the past, we held our ribbon ceremony and gave out ice pops at the end of the picnic. Thank you to all that attended and all that helped make it a super day!

FALL 2021 www.cedarlakecc.com Clubhouse Driveway Repair Project by Michele Watson Over the past few years, a section of the Cedar Lake Clubhouse driveway has developed a significant drainage problem along with a lot of overall wear and tear on the driveway and parking lot. As the sole tenants of the clubhouse, the CLCC is responsible for repairs and improvements to the property. We have been working with the CLPO to explore options for addressing the situation and it turns out to be a pretty expensive undertaking. We are extremely lucky to have some very talented tradesmen in our midst who were willing to donate their time, efforts, equipment, and talents to addressing the drainage problem so the rest of the driveway can be repaired. We owe a big debt of gratitude to Mark Hoffman, Daniel Jackson, and Wayne Leonard who installed a new drainage basin to help route the flow of water to prevent future water runoff and continued erosion. If you see these guys around the lake, be sure to thank them!
