‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Positivity Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 7 May 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “You’re off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” Dr. Seuss Key Messages I hope that this E-bulletin finds you and your family well. It’s been a shorter week this week, but busy as ever! Positivity is our core value of the week. The showcase of student work featured in this E-bulletin is a tribute to the positivity and commitment of our amazing students. Year 7 students have been producing some outstanding work in Art and Music where they've been learning about Frida Kahlo and learning to play a pentatonic rondo. Well done to Ava, Elouise and Megan-Leanne who received certificates to recognise their efforts. Outstanding! Congratulations too, to Lorraine in Year 10 who’s been dedicated to singing and playing the guitar since the age of 8. Now she has a professionally recorded EP. We cannot wait to hear Lorraine on Spotify soon. In the meantime, you can listen to her music here https://facebook.com/lorrainestewartmusic I began the week with a whole school assembly to celebrate the student contribution to our positive OFSTED report, which was published last week. Pride in Presentation was a key theme, encompassing pride in our work and in our smart appearance, and respect for our school environment. I also focussed on our high expectations in the classroom. I want everyone to have the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills. As a reading academy, we have been delighted to receive a collection of 35 'Shelf Help' books from the Reading Agency. The aim of these books is to support the Reading Agency's ‘Read, Talk, Share’ initiative, promoting well-being through the power of reading. Topics on offer include support on wellbeing, mindfulness, coping with anxiety and much more. The on-line Year 7 Parents’ evening on Wednesday was extremely positively received. As I delivered refreshments to our classrooms it was wonderful to hear the positive interactions between parents, students and staff. On Thursday we held interviews for a Spanish teacher, a new post at West Craven. I am delighted that we will be able to offer Spanish as a new modern language from September alongside French. If you are a parent of a Year 6 student, we are planning a week long “summer school”. It will be free of charge to all new West Craven students. It will take place week commencing Monday 23 August. Save the date and more details will follow soon. Please stay safe and as always get in touch if I can help or support in any way. Mrs Tracy Foy Principal

We are a Reading Academy READING FOR ALL It is heartening to see more and more extra-curricular activities opening up to our students following the restraints of lockdown, and on this energetic note, we are planning ahead for our exciting May virtual visit from the renowned Sports Fiction writer, Tom Palmer. He will be inspiring our young readers with his history, sports and adventure stories. Meanwhile, Mrs Boardman is stocking the library shelves with a new selection of fiction and non- fiction comics and magazines including sports, music, fashion, manga, gaming and much more. We are gifted with such a range of hobbies and interests and we aim to inspire each and every student. This week, we invited Margaret Parsons to share her reading experiences with us. Margaret is a journalist in local newspapers and former News Editor of the East Lancashire Newspaper Group: Barnoldswick & Earby Times, Nelson Leader, Colne Times, Burnley Express and Clitheroe Advertiser. Thank you to Margaret for sharing her reading message with us, which encapsulates this week’s message of reading for all: “I think my love of reading grew from living in a household with elder brothers and sisters who all loved comics! We followed the antics of Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan (does he still eat cow pies?) who were our favourite comedy characters in a house where The Beano, Dandy, Topper, Bunty and Judy were delivered every week, along with a daily newspaper, local papers and magazines. We always had the Farmers' Guardian as we lived on a farm; Horse and Hound as my sister loved horses, Motor Cycle News as my brother was a professional motorbike scrambler, and of course pop magazines for the dancers and musicians amongst us. There were always things to read in our house, and I even loved an old set of encyclopaedias - books that told you about everything under the sun. Now we just use Google! I began to love books when I started to read a set of classic stories that were in our bookcase - I honestly think I was attracted by their bright red covers. But I really enjoyed reading - and crying - about 'Black Beauty', 'Lorna Doone' and my favourite heroine - Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre'. I was also inspired by my mum who used to recite to us really exciting poems full of adventure such as The Charge of the Light Brigade and the Wreck of the Hesperus. Really great poems and she knew every single word off by heart. I can even remember the first two books we read in class when I went to high school - Jack London's 'White Fang' and the crazy adventures of Phileas Fogg in 'Around The World in 80 Days' - you probably know the film with Steve Coogan. I still love a book with a really good story - but definitely not horror or mysteries. And I am just about to start reading "Becoming Michelle" - by former USA First Lady Michelle Obama. Happy reading. “ Reading Quote of the Week… ‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body’ Joseph Addison
Book Reviews Geek Girl by Holly Smale I really enjoyed reading Geek Girl as it was quite relatable in terms of school and friendships. The book is about a girl named Harriet Manners who is quite clever and geeky and her best friend, Nat. Harriet ends up accidently becoming a model whilst on a school trip. I would recommend this book because it is full of humour and funny moments and very relatable. Overall, I would give it 5 stars. It’s a great story. Emily Taylor, Year 8 Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui This book is a manga, also known as a Japanese comic. It is about a villain teacher who is an alien octopus and if his students don’t manage to kill him he will destroy the earth! The students must learn his strengths and weaknesses before time runs out. They still have to be taught by him every day. All is failing until a mischievous boy comes back to school and things really start to change. Each chapter becomes more and more action-packed as they try different ways to kill him. I would recommend this book to ages 12 and over as there are some violent scenes. I would also recommend to anyone who likes manga or anime. I would definitely recommend reading manga fiction. My overall rating is a 4.5 stars; I think there could have been more speech in it. Freya Hutchinson, Year 8
