Hobart is a family-oriented city located on the eastern boundary of urban Lake County.
Hobart, Indiana is 6 miles SE of Gary, Indiana and 30 miles SE of Chicago, Illinois. The city is in
the Gary area. Within Northwest Indiana, Hobart enjoys a strategic location at the crossroads
of Interstate 65 and U.S. Highway 30. The City of Hobart is located adjacent to the Porter
County boundary. The city shares a common border on the north with Lake Station and New
Chicago, south with unincorporated Lake County, west with Gary and Merrillville, and east
with Portage and unincorporated Porter county. Hobart is served by excellent transportation
facilities including Interstate Highway Routes 80, 90, and 94, U.S. Highway 6, and State Roads
51 and 130. The City of Hobart had a population of 28,305 as of July 1, 2021.

Today, the city’s diverse economy is tied to the greater Chicagoland market. A variety of
opportunities are available for businesses that desire to make Hobart their home. Hobart is
home to a number businesses in its downtown shopping district, including the historic Art
Theatre. Known for its health care excellence, Hobart’s St. Mary Medical center attracts
patrons from several counties. Stretching across Hobart’s northern boundary along 37th
Avenue is a variety of commercial activity. Two major shopping plazas are at the east end with
light industry at the west. State Road 130 Industrial Area has easy access to I-80/94 to the
north, this area is home to several of Hobart’s oldest industries such as Area Sheet Metal and
Midwest Service Center. Anchored by Northwest Indiana’s premier shopping center, Westfield
Southlake Shopping Mall, the US 30 commercial corridor extends from west to east along
Hobart’s southern boundary.

Hobart also features a historic downtown in the Lakefront District on the shores of Lake
George. Lake George is a popular recreational spot. People come here to stroll along the
riverfront. They also enjoy fishing and boating on the lake. During the summer months, musical
programs are organized at Lakefront Park and also at the Revelli Bandshell. Besides this, the
city also has 14 parks, two 18 hole public golf courses, basketball courts, and baseball, football,
rugby, and soccer fields. Deep River County Park is a beautiful, serene park that encompasses
more than 1,200 acres. Hobart Art Theater downtown hosts musical acts and special events
throughout the year. August's four-day Lakefront Festival features live entertainment, an arts
and crafts area, food vendors and a beer garden, as well as the Dam Duck Race & Cardboard
Regatta.
