Rowing - King’s Cup Centenary 181 years of rowing competition – from whaleboats and sculling for “purses” of gold sovereigns, to championship fours and eights, and contemporary junior crew sculling, rowing has been continuously conducted at the regatta since 1838. The Course The 1,200 metre course from the Tasman Bridge to the regatta grounds has toggle starts for senior rowers, 1,000 metre open water starts for junior rowers, and shorter courses for under 13 and special events. Saturday 9th Feb. from 7am For 2019 the rowing program is once again featured on Saturday, improving logistics for rowing clubs and schools and providing a larger single spectacle and celebration of rowing. Special prize medals have been struck for placegetters in headline events, and all rowers will receive a 181st anniversary medallion. Subject to the draw, rowing will commence from 7.00am and conclude by 10.00am Feature races for 2018 include: • The “Alexandra Sculls” men’s and women’s championship event. • The “Secheron Purse” Masters’ men’s and women’s quad sculls event. • AWBF Wooden Eights Race with a prize purse donated by the Tasmanian King’s Cup Oarsmen’s Association. • Denis Mounie Trophy for Championship Eights - Men’s, Women’s Handicap Eights - spectacular handicap race. The regatta includes a full program of single, double and quad scull events for junior (Under 13, 14 and 15) rowers, providing a great opportunity for extended families to see their younger members. King’s Cup Centenary The 1919 Royal Henley Peace Regatta featured an allied forces eights event. Australia, Cambridge Uni, Canada, France, Oxford Uni and the USA rowed for a gold cup donated by King George V. Two Tasmanians, Sgt. Arch Robb and Lieut. Fred House rowed in the Australian crew which won the King’s Cup. Now the perpetual trophy for the Men’s Interstate Eight-Oared Championship Race, the Cup is coming to Hobart for the Regatta and the AWBF. 2019 Regatta Ambassador Sunday 10th February 2pm Regatta foreshore Proudly supported by the The Regatta Ambassador is about building confidence, Tasmanian Talent Agency developing communication and social skills and having fun. It aims to raise the profile of the Regatta to Tasmania’s youth and encourage potential future ambassadors. The Ambassador role is for 12 months and is open to males and females within Junior Ambassador and Senior Ambassador categories. The Ambassadors will work promote the Regatta to Tasmanian youth at Regatta and Community events and encourage other Young Tasmanians to get involved and become the next Ambassador. Ambassador judging will take place on Saturday 9 February aboard the HMAS Choules. Entrants will meet officers of the Australian Navy and chat with Regatta judges. The following day Sunday 10 February ‘People’s Day’, accompanied by Navy personnel, entrants will be taken by a small cruiser to the Regatta Ground for the announcement of the 2019 Junior and Senior Ambassadors. Entrants under the age of 18 must ensure parental permission before entering. The Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into. Age groups: 2-4 years 5-7 years 8-10 years 11-14 years Registration Enter online: www.royalhobartregatta.com or on the day from 12noon-1.15pm on the Regatta Foreshore. Cost is $5 per entrant. Judging will be based on a suitable Regatta ‘summer outfit’. Outfits should be ‘age appropriate’ and entrants are encouraged to be neat and tidy. Placegetters receive a sash and prizes. RAN Helicopter display - MHR90 The helicopter from HMAS Choules will be on display throughout the weekend. Details to be advised. The MRH90 is one of the most advanced tactical troop transport helicopters of the 21st Century. As a multi-role helicopter, the MRH90 can undertake troop transport, search and rescue, special operations and counter-terrorism missions. The MRH90 has a large cabin, a rear ramp, weather radar and forward-looking infra-red, the MRH90 can transport greater loads and carry more troops in adverse conditions. 2019 Flagship HMAS Choules Choules is an amphibious Landing Ship Dock - a highly operational 16,000 tonne ship, 176 metres long, 24 metres wide, and capable of carrying over 300 troops, 23 Abrams tanks, 150 light Trucks, LCVP, Welcome to Tasmania!
