THE BELLARINE SOAK IT IN Visitors have been enjoying the sights, hospitality and sea air of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale for more than 100 years. The impressive heritage architecture in Queenscliff nods to the Victorian era hotels and grand buildings, whilst the relaxed pace in beachside Point Lonsdale has been an idyllic coastal escape for families for generations. It’s still the magnetic pull of the water that brings people to these parts. The pounding ocean to the South, Swan Bay creating the northern boundary and both towns overlooking the entrance to Port Phillip Bay and the comings and goings of vessels. It’s intoxicating and magic to be beside the seaside. What has changed in that time, besides the absence of petticoats, is the many ways the region can be explored and enjoyed. Tour operators and activities immerse visitors in water-based experiences that showcase VISITGEELONGBELLARINE.COM.AU the incredible marine environments. Eating and drinking can range from casual breakfast with a view through to specialised meals with hyper-local ingredients and matched wine, and there are more than a handful of good coffee options. The streets are also home to an array of independent shops and grocers with local wares. nd s c li ff a The event calendar includes music, literary, film, food, Qu een Lo n s da le sport and if that all seems exhausting there are Po i nt several decadent day spas to rejuvenate the body and soul. 5
SALTWATER HAVEN Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, as part of The Bellarine, has been a seaside sanctuary for thousands of years. In Wadawurrung language, ‘Bella Wiyn’ means ‘recline on the elbow by the fire.’ Traditional Owners have long known the relaxing and restorative power of these lands. Wadawurrung people spent time here fishing, hunting and harvesting resources, particularly in and around Swan Bay.* The Queenscliff region has continued its role as a maritime haven; as a holiday location, a defence stronghold, a navigation site and a connection point between people and the sea. Surrounded on three sides by bodies of water, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale are blessed with some of the most compelling marine environments in the country. These environments are significant ecological resources – Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park has a stunning and diverse marine life - more than half of the plants and animals found along the southern coastline aren’t found anywhere else in the world. Swan Bay is a recognised Ramsar Wetland with 200+ species of bird recorded, including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot. *Information sourced from Swan Bay Environment Association with support from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners. https://swanbayenvironment.org.au/swan-bay/the-wadawurrung-people/ 6 QUEENSCLIFF QUEENSCLIFF FORESHORE
