EXHIBITIONS Moreton Bay Region Art Prize Opening early 2021 The exciting new Moreton Bay Region Art Prize builds on the strong foundation of the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards, to support and celebrate local artists. The exhibition of finalists will be held at the new Pine Rivers Art Gallery. The prize pool totals $10,000 with a non-acquisitive prize of $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, $1,500 for third place and $500 for the people’s choice. Blaklash emerging curator project Coming May 2021 Supported by Blaklash Creative, Pine Rivers Art Gallery will feature an exhibition developed by an emerging First Nations curator, drawing from Moreton Bay Regional Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast’s art collections. This project is part of Connecting Stories an initiative of Creative Arts Alliance as part of the Regional Arts Services Network and is presented in partnership with Blaklash Creative and the SEQN Regional Gallery Network. EXHIBITIONS A Portrait of Australia: Stories through the lens of Australian Geographic 16 October 2020 - 14 February 2021 This exhibition is a celebration in pictures of the bush, the outback, the coast and the people who live there. Featuring photographs from the Australian Geographic archive, be transported to some of the most rugged and remote parts of the country and discover the remarkable stories of ordinary Australians Photograph by Colin Beard, Australian Geographic. - their indomitable community spirit, their struggles, passions, livelihoods, skills and the changing times through which they have lived. A travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with Australian Geographic. It’s personal 19 February - 6 June 2021 Every day, men and women alike apply lotions, groom their hair and carry out hidden beauty regimes to present themselves to the world. Have you ever considered why and how technology, social attitudes and politics have shaped the products we use? It’s personal takes us inside the world of intimate objects and personal effects where nothing is taboo. Discover the makeup style of the 1920s adventurous woman, what First World War nurses had to do with sanitary pads and the meaning behind men’s beards. Fetch the doctor! 11 June - 3 October 2021 Have you ever had a vaccine? Taken antibiotics? Been operated on by a robot? We rely on modern medicine to keep us alive and well, but what did survival look like 100 years ago? Fetch the doctor! explores the grim yet fascinating medical history of pioneers of the local region. We uncover the challenges of getting to a doctor; the Part of procession carnival in Caboolture, c1920s. popular potions which proved toxic; and the Moreton Bay Region Libraries. life and death choices that had to be made. Featuring intriguing and sometimes disturbing surgical equipment, killer pills and medical misadventure, Fetch the doctor! will leave you thankful for modern medical advancements. Exhibition developed by Moreton Bay Regional Council. Conversation starter Be intrigued, challenged, amazed and delighted by speakers with vision and courage sharing contemporary ideas informed by our heritage. Conversations about who we are, where we’ve been and where we’re going. No topic is off the table! This series takes the baton from the hugely successful Heritage Talks and takes it to the next level! There will be laughing, frowning and raising of eyebrows. EXHIBITIONS Oceans from here 12 December 2020 - 27 February 2021 Oceans from here is an exhibition of contemporary photography exploring the aesthetics of water from mountain glaciers to the open seas. Exhibiting artists have responded to water as a vital element, which flows through the land to the seas and fills the atmosphere of our planet. State of Shine 6 March - 12 June 2021 When we think of Queensland, we think warm weather, beaches and blue skies. But as we know, Queensland is much, much more. It is a place of contrasts and extremes, and a state of mind. The Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (Queensland Chapter) have set out to capture what it means to work and live in the Sunshine State. Drawing inspiration from its history, people and landscape, these artisans capture the essence of Queensland. Weapons for the soldier 12 March - 15 May 2021 A major exhibition bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artists to examine complex themes of weaponry, warfare, and protecting land and Country. It was initiated by the young men of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Vincent Namatjira, Aaron Ken, Derek Jungarrayi Thompson, Anwar Young and Kamurin Young, with support from senior artists Willy Kaika Burton, Ray Ken, Peter Mungkuri, Mumu Mike Williams and Frank Young. It is a phenomenon that is becoming more common as greater numbers of people live in urban areas and disengage from the natural environment. Hitting the snooze button or awake with the birds? Sleep is something we all do - and we all do it differently. Today a good night sleep is a solid eight hours of sleep on a comfy mattress, but how did people sleep in the past? Why did people in Medieval society have two sleeps a night and how did people sleep before all the modern comforts we have today? From sleepwear to chamber pots, nightcaps to coconut mattresses, discover the history of sleep, how we sleep today and how people might sleep in the future. Capturing Nature: Early photography at the Australian Museum 1857–1893 14 May - 22 August 2021 In Capturing Nature, we travel back to a time when photography was revolutionising science, art and society. These never- before-seen images dating from 1857 Sperm Whale flipper, Megaptera longimana. to 1893 have been printed from the Photo © Australian Museum. Australian Museum’s collection of glass plate negatives and are some of Australia’s earliest natural history photographs. Sitting at the nexus of science and art, they tell both the story of pioneering research as well as the advent of photography in the young colony less than 20 years after the birth of photography in Europe. Manggan – gather, gathers, gathering is a travelling exhibition in partnership between Girringun Aborginal Art Centre, the South Australian Museum, and toured by Museums & Galleries Queensland. This exhibition is supported by the Visions regional touring program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to cultural material for all Australians. Just Not Australian 17 April - 19 June 2021 Just Not Australian presents Australian practitioners at the forefront of national debate and practice. Drawing together 20 artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, their differing ideas and perspectives on nationhood coexist within this timely thematic show. Down there we will meet sea creatures that like to hide and ones that we should hide from! There are clever creatures that make potions, ones that look a bit strange and the gentle giants of the sea. What lurks below is an interactive exhibition for the whole family. Be prepared to get hands on, be amazed...and maybe even be a little bit scared! Bribie - your stories, our stories 21 May - 8 August 2021 We are turning our museum over to you. Bribie - your stories, our stories is a place to share, learn and laugh about all that we know and love about this place. We are on a quest to capture the richness of Bribie life from those who know it best - you! We want not only the extraordinary but also the ordinary and everyday stories. Our newest continuing exhibition Going Away captures the beginnings of our beloved Bribie as a tourist destination, taking its design inspiration from the ‘Twelve Apostles’- colourful weatherboard holiday huts which once lined the foreshore at Bongaree. The exhibition tells the stories of holidays spent on Bribie; what people did for fun, where they stayed and why Bribie was and continues to be a popular holiday spot.
