FOREWORD Words before the race Patrick Lee Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Limited Over the past 18 years, 750,000 runners have crossed the finish line at Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. Everyone runs for a reason. I have heard countless stories of personal triumph, and as many inspirational tales about running for a cause. Many fellow runners I know run in support of one another, and we know of many families who participate in Kids Dash as a family bonding activity. This year, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon is taking a historical step closer to become a World Marathon Major (WMM). In the near future, we hope runners can race in the Singapore Marathon as a time qualifier for the world’s most prestigious league of races. As a bank who has been in Singapore for the past 160 years, we are excited about elevating this race to the top echelons of global marathons. This puts Singapore on the world sporting map, and allows Singaporeans direct access to a world-class event that we can call our own. As a runner, I will be racing with my colleagues to support Futuremakers – the Bank’s global charity to support equality and diversity, and to promote economic inclusion for youths. Crossing the finish line at our very first evening race will be especially significant for all of us. I would like to take this opportunity to convey my appreciation to Sport Singapore, IRONMAN, and all our partners in the governmental agencies. Thank you for helping us deliver a world-class event for our runners, supporters and volunteers. And to our runners – Thank You for being part of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. This race would not be possible without you and I look forward to seeing you at the start line. Geoff Meyer Managing Director, IRONMAN Asia Thank you for being a part of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2019. This year, over three days, over 50,000 runners young and old, across various categories, will flag off at the Formula 1 Pit Building and cross the finish line at The Float@Marina Bay. This is the first time in history all races will flag off from the same starting line, not to mention that it will also be the race first evening edition as improvements have been made in our bid for the Abbott World Marathon Major (AbbottWMM) status. Other race improvements include increased entertainment zones, lighting on the Marathon route to optimize visibility, and the doubling of volunteer numbers to ensure smooth dispensing of hydration enroute. We are now closer than ever to the required criteria and strongly believe that the improvements made will see more marathoners and community support than ever as we position ourselves to qualify for a AbbottWMM status. SCSM as a global spectacle, has witnessed a steady increase in international participation over the years with this year’s elite field seeing almost one-third jump in numbers and 50% more participants within the wheelchair category – a testament to the inclusivity of endurance sports. Not to mention that these world-class elites who have signed up for this year’s race have personal bests superseding that of the reigning champions. 2019 is definitely an exciting race to watch and be a part of and I would like to thank Standard Chartered Bank, Sport Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board and all our partners for their continuous support. I look forward to have you create history with us. See you at the start line. 5 | S I N G A P O R E M A R AT H O N . C O M
