Planet-Friendly Hospitality for Earth Hour
Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, uniting people to
take action on climate change and protect the planet. Since 2007, Earth Hour has been
embraced by businesses large and small.

What better way to celebrate Earth Hour than with good friends and good food? Restaurants
and cafes all across Australia have hosted candlelit Earth Hour events, with some even raising
funds for WWF’s conservation work.

This year, you can also join hundreds of other businesses to show support for strong climate
action by sending us your logo to display on the Earth Hour online pledge wall.

There are many ways your restaurant can get involved this Earth Hour:
   ● Switch off for Earth Hour and register your participation. After registering, join
hundreds of other businesses to show support for strong climate action by sending us
your logo to display on the Earth Hour pledge wall (available from Monday 11 March)
   ● Share photos of what you’re doing on Earth Hour to #Connect2Earth and nominate
other businesses to get involved through our #switchoffchallenge
   ● Find out how you can reduce the carbon footprint of your restaurant
   ● Get hyped with posters, social media kits included in this pack!
   ● Host candlelight dinners for Earth Hour, or a sustainably-sourced food event like a
‘Sustainable Set Menu’ dining experience or a ‘No Waste Wednesday’. You can register
your event or get inspired here!
   ● Host an event for your employees in the week of Earth Hour, like our Earth Hour Solar
Light Challenge to help children in need
   ● Get in touch if you’re interested in becoming an Earth Hour sponsor
   ● Host candlelight dinners for Earth Hour if you’re a restaurant or cafe, or
       sustainably-sourced food events!

Climate Change: What does it mean for Australia’s species?

Australia is home to an amazing array of unique plants and animals. More than 80% of Australia's
flowering plants, mammals, reptiles, frogs and almost 50% of our birds occur nowhere else on Earth.
However, our incredible country is losing species at an unprecedented rate and climate change is a key
danger.

Here are just a few examples:

Green turtles and the Great Barrier Reef
Rising sea levels are threatening Raine Island in the Great Barrier Reef, currently home to one of the
world’s largest nesting sites for green turtles. A recent study (supported by WWF) showed that higher
temperatures in nests are causing turtle eggs to produce females. Around 99% of the green turtle
population is now female, signalling a potential population crash. 7

Koalas
With higher average temperatures, global warming is changing the water and nitrogen content of
eucalyptus leaves, the koala’s only food, making them less nutritious. As a result, koalas are not getting
enough water and nutrients from their natural diet and have to leave the protection of their treetop
homes, making them prone to predators and traffic.

The black-flanked rock-wallaby
The highly endangered black-flanked rock-wallaby’s habitat includes the desert and bush in many parts
of north and Western Australia. More severe and longer droughts will result in food and habitat loss,
leaving these beautiful animals with nowhere to go.

The Antarctic
The Antarctic is one of the fastest warming areas on the planet. The accelerated melting of the
Antarctic’s ice sheets has contributed to average global sea levels rising, increasing the risk of coastal
flooding in Australia.

The melting ice is putting pressure on the Antarctic’s many coastal and marine species, including
penguins. A third of the Adélie penguin colonies in this region could disappear in less than 50 years due
to the impacts of climate change on food supply of krill and fish.

Take the Earth Hour Solar Light Challenge
Engage your staff in climate change action and harness the power of renewable energy to change the
lives of those in need. WWF-Australia is partnering with SolarBuddy to provide solar lights to schools,
children and families living in remote areas of Papua New Guinea.

As a team, you’ll assemble the lights in a hands-on and engaging activity that you can complete at your
own venue. We’ll provide you with how-to instructions, as well as video resources and information kits.
The lights you build will help children to study, remove the need for harmful kerosine lamps and reduce
C02 emissions.
